For a large enterprise, the right carbon accounting platform is the one that can turn your activity data into a traceable greenhouse-gas inventory—and support the reporting and supplier workflows you actually need. Seven platforms appear in the 2026 market assessment covered here, but available product documentation supports a detailed look at only four. Treat the others as candidates to investigate, not as equally verified recommendations.
How to use this 2026 shortlist
This is an evaluation guide, not a ranking. Watershed, Persefoni, IBM Envizi, and Microsoft Sustainability Manager have product descriptions in the available material that support a useful account of selected workflows. Salesforce Agentforce Net Zero, SAP sustainability products, and Sphera Operational Intelligence are named among the solutions assessed in Verdantix’s 2026 Green Quadrant, but the assessment listing alone does not establish their current feature sets or AI capabilities.

Verdantix says it assessed 21 suppliers and solutions. Its framework assigns 15% each to data acquisition and data management, and considers data acquisition for Scope 1, Scope 2, Scope 3, and product emissions. Those percentages are weights in the analyst’s assessment framework—not estimates of a buyer’s implementation effort, cost, or priorities. A reprint of the assessment is hosted by Sweep.
Which seven platforms belong on an enterprise evaluation list?
The descriptions below distinguish vendor-stated product capabilities from analyst-list inclusion. They do not establish that one platform is better than another; the claims need to be tested against your own data, controls, and reporting obligations.
#1 Best Overall
| Platform | What the available material says | What to validate |
|---|---|---|
| Watershed | Watershed describes AI agents for cleaning, formatting, and analyzing data, plus intelligence to draft reports using peer benchmarks and climate databases. It says its platform includes human review and transparent calculations, and that it has methods for all 15 Scope 3 categories. | Test the data-cleaning and report-drafting workflows with your records. Ask how reviewers see suggested changes, what evidence supports each calculation, and how the claimed category coverage handles your supplier and product data. These are vendor descriptions, not comparative validation. |
| Persefoni | Persefoni describes Scope 1, 2, and 3 footprints, regulatory reporting, a GPT-style Copilot for carbon-accounting questions, anomaly detection, standards-aligned calculations, and supplier engagement. Its natural-language emission-factor mapping from spend files is marked “Coming Soon.” | Confirm which functions are generally available under the product and contract you would buy. In particular, do not treat the emission-factor mapping feature as available until Persefoni confirms its release and terms. |
| IBM Envizi | IBM describes configurable organization modeling across regions, sites, assets, product lines, and joint ventures; automated data-health checks; logged audit trails; and supplier-level transaction data intended to improve Scope 3 accounting. IBM says it supports Scope 1, 2, and 3 accounting aligned with the GHG Protocol. It offers the product as a managed platform, supported Excel calculations, or emissions logic through an API. | Ask which configuration fits your operating model, how data changes and approvals appear in the audit trail, and which sources can provide supplier-level transactions for your categories. IBM says pricing depends on managed data volume and that requirements are scoped during sales; a price is not stated in the available material. |
| Microsoft Sustainability Manager | Microsoft Learn describes a SaaS solution built on Power Platform for environmental impacts across operations and the value chain. Its documentation says it calculates Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions across GHG Protocol categories, supports goals and what-if analysis, and provides disclosure reporting across named frameworks. It also describes Microsoft AI and Copilot capabilities for sustainability. The reference architecture page was updated February 17, 2026. | Ask Microsoft to demonstrate the specific AI and Copilot tasks you need, including what they automate and what requires approval. Verify licensing, current product packaging, framework templates, and implementation requirements for your organization. |
| Salesforce Agentforce Net Zero | Named as an assessed solution in the Verdantix 2026 supplier list; detailed current product capabilities are not established by that listing. | Request current official documentation and a demonstration of data intake, calculation methods, AI functions, reporting, and audit controls. |
| SAP sustainability products, including Sustainability Control Tower | SAP Sustainability Control Tower and related SAP products are named in the Verdantix 2026 supplier list; that inclusion does not verify specific current capabilities. | Ask which product and edition addresses your use case, then validate its current Scope 3 methods, AI features, integrations, disclosure outputs, and implementation requirements. |
| Sphera Operational Intelligence | Named as an assessed solution in the Verdantix 2026 supplier list; detailed current product and AI capabilities are not established by that listing. | Request official product material and demonstrate the workflows, calculation evidence, controls, and reporting outputs your team expects to use. |
Vendor descriptions are not independent tests. The available material does not establish equivalent feature coverage across all seven platforms, so avoid treating the table as a like-for-like scorecard.
What should enterprise buyers compare first?
Carbon accounting software connects operational activity data to emissions factors, calculations, inventory results, and reporting. The calculation engine matters, but so do the data entering it, the governance around changes, and the evidence your team can retrieve later. Use the following questions to structure vendor demonstrations.
Rank #2
Data intake and quality controls
- Which of your actual systems and files can the platform ingest: ERP, utilities, meters, travel, procurement, and supplier data?
- How does it flag missing, inconsistent, or anomalous data? Can users inspect corrections, their authors, and approval history?
- Can the platform represent your organization’s regions, sites, assets, product lines, and joint ventures without losing the boundaries needed for reporting?
- Ask the vendor to import a representative sample of your data and show both the exceptions and the resolved records.
Scope 3 methods and supplier evidence
Scope 3 workflows deserve particular scrutiny because a platform may rely on estimates when primary supplier or transaction data is unavailable. Ask vendors to show category-level coverage for your inventory and explain how the underlying evidence is classified.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Which of the 15 Scope 3 categories can it calculate for your use case, and what inputs does each require?
- Can users distinguish spend-based estimates from supplier-specific or product-level data?
- Can the team inspect the assumptions, emissions-factor provenance, and source data behind a result?
- What supplier-engagement workflow collects primary data, and how does the system handle incomplete or conflicting submissions?
Watershed’s claim of methods for all 15 categories, Persefoni’s description of supplier engagement, and IBM’s description of supplier-level transaction data are different vendor statements; none, by itself, demonstrates which platform will produce the strongest result for your data.

Calculation transparency and assurance
During a demonstration, select one reported figure and trace it backward: from the report to the calculation, factor, activity record, organizational boundary, and reviewer decision. Verify which standards and methods are used, how factor versions are preserved, and whether a reviewer can reconstruct what changed and when.
Watershed describes transparent calculations and human review; IBM describes automated data-health checks and logged audit trails. Treat those as starting points for a control walkthrough. Ask each vendor to show the actual screens, logs, and exports your assurance process would rely on.
Rank #4
Reporting, targets, and action
Map the platform’s outputs to the reporting obligations and internal decisions your organization has today. Microsoft’s documentation describes disclosure reporting across named frameworks, goal management, and what-if analysis. For every vendor, confirm the specific frameworks and templates supported in your region and product edition, the data each requires, and whether outputs can be exported in a usable form.

How to assess an “AI” claim
AI can mean several distinct things in carbon accounting: data cleaning, anomaly detection, question answering, report drafting, or automated mapping. A feature label does not say whether the system proposes a change, applies one, or merely summarizes information. Ask the vendor to demonstrate the named capability with your data, then establish how it is controlled.
- Task: What exact step does the feature perform, and what input data does it use?
- Result: Does it return a suggestion, a draft, an alert, or a change to the inventory?
- Review: Who must approve the result, and can users inspect the supporting records and reasoning?
- Traceability: Are accepted, rejected, or edited outputs recorded for later review?
- Availability: Is the capability generally available in the product and edition under consideration, or planned? Persefoni labels its natural-language spend-file emission-factor mapping “Coming Soon.”
Examples in the vendor descriptions differ: Watershed describes agents for data cleaning, formatting, and analysis; Persefoni describes Copilot-style question answering and anomaly detection; IBM describes AI-assisted sustainability data management; Microsoft describes AI and Copilot capabilities within its sustainability offering. The descriptions do not establish that these functions automate the same task or have equivalent controls.
What to request in a carbon accounting software demo
- Bring representative data. Ask the vendor to ingest sample records from at least one operational source and one supplier or spend source, with sensitive information removed as needed.
- Follow one result end to end. Trace an emissions figure through activity data, factor source and version, calculation method, organizational boundary, and report output.
- Test an exception. Provide incomplete or anomalous data and watch how the system flags it, proposes a correction, and records a reviewer’s decision.
- Inspect a Scope 3 category. Ask the vendor to show how estimates, supplier-specific information, and product-level data are distinguished for a category relevant to your inventory.
- Run an AI workflow. Identify the task, data used, human approval point, and audit record. Confirm whether the feature is available now in the proposed edition.
- Check reporting and deployment fit. Demonstrate the frameworks, exports, integrations, permissions, data residency, and organizational hierarchy your company requires.
- Get commercial scope in writing. Confirm implementation services, contract structure, pricing basis, managed data limits, licensing, and any requirements that affect total cost.
How to narrow the shortlist for your organization
Start with the systems and data your company can reliably provide, not the length of a vendor’s feature list. Eliminate options that cannot represent your organizational boundaries, capture evidence at the required level, or produce the outputs your reporting teams need. Then compare supplier workflows, review controls, AI availability, deployment fit, and total implementation scope using the same demonstration scenarios.

For Salesforce, SAP, and Sphera, the 2026 Verdantix supplier listing confirms they were among assessed solutions, but it is not enough to support a detailed product comparison here. Obtain current official materials and verify each claim directly. More broadly, do not infer equivalent AI capability or buyer fit from an analyst assessment’s vendor inclusion.
