Manoj Chaudhary, Jitterbit’s CTO and SVP of Engineering, calls that shift “route reconfiguration.” It is his framing of a move from experimentation toward operational readiness—not proof that every enterprise has ended its AI push. The AI Journal article sets out the argument; the evidence below helps explain why the practical questions now include governance, infrastructure, and cost as well as model capability.
What “route reconfiguration” means for enterprise AI
Chaudhary’s metaphor is about changing priorities, not abandoning AI. A successful demonstration in a sandbox does not by itself establish that a system is ready to handle production data, connect to core applications, or take actions that affect customers and business records. As deployment moves into business infrastructure, operational consequences grow.

That makes the central question less “Can we build a pilot?” and more “Can we own this system over time?” A production decision needs to account for integration, access boundaries, security, lifecycle oversight, human responsibility, and the cost of use. These are practical decision criteria synthesized from the cited perspectives, not a validated scoring framework.
Why pilots encounter an operating-model problem
Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s 2026 materials describe moving from pilots to continuous, governed AI operations across hybrid environments as an operating-model challenge. HPE reports that 70% of enterprise leaders in its Business Transformers Community survey said their operating model was holding back AI scale; HPE says the survey was conducted in January–February 2026. This is a vendor-published survey finding, not an independent measure of all enterprises.

The finding points to a distinction that matters in practice: a pilot can be contained within a small team, while a scaled service has to fit existing processes, data pipelines, applications, and ownership structures. If those are not ready, a technically capable model can still be difficult to maintain or govern.
Chaudhary also warns about shadow AI, data leakage, unclear model provenance, permissions inherited from connected SaaS systems, and agents given excessive privileges. These are his analysis and risk concerns, not independently measured causal findings in the article. They illustrate why access design and oversight need to be considered before an AI system is allowed to act across business systems.

What the available evidence says about AI economics
Model capability does not settle whether a deployment makes business sense. Organizations need visibility into usage and cost, a way to connect those figures to an outcome, and a credible forecast as adoption changes. A DigitalRoute-sponsored global study, reported in the company’s 26 May 2026 press release, highlights the uncertainty respondents described:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- 8% said they were extremely confident they understood the true cost-to-serve of AI features.
- 47% cited rising AI-related costs as a top challenge.
- 61% said revenue predictability had become harder.
- 23% said their forecasting of AI usage, cost, and revenue fluctuations was highly accurate.
- 76% considered real-time usage data materially important to monetization, while 38% reported difficulty managing or using AI usage data.
These are findings reported from a sponsored study, not a universal enterprise census; the press release does not establish respondent representativeness. They are best read as signals of the questions organizations are asking about AI economics, rather than as industry-wide rates. The release is available from DigitalRoute via PR Newswire.
How to assess a deployment before it becomes core infrastructure
A useful decision review tests whether the intended system can move beyond a demo without creating unmanaged operational or financial exposure. Apply the questions to a specific workflow, not to AI in the abstract.
Operational readiness and integration
- Which business workflow will the system support, and which applications and data pipelines must it connect to?
- Can the team responsible for the workflow monitor, maintain, and update it after the pilot team steps away?
- What happens when a connected service is unavailable, data is incomplete, or the model output cannot be used?
Governance and accountability
- Which data may enter the system, and which users or components can access it?
- Are permissions limited to the actions the system actually needs, including permissions inherited through connected services?
- Can the organization identify the model and system components in use and review consequential actions?
- Where is human review required before an action is taken, and who is accountable for exceptions?
Cost and business value
- Can teams observe usage and cost at a useful level, then connect those measures to a defined business outcome?
- Can expected economics be forecast as usage changes, or is the case based only on a pilot’s initial conditions?
- What evidence would justify expansion, modification, or stopping the deployment?
Infrastructure fit
- Does the design fit the organization’s existing environment, performance needs, and operational constraints?
- Who will own reliability, security, compliance, and ongoing modernization once the system is in service?
Infrastructure fit is also a theme in IBM executive Barry Baker’s argument for considering AI tools alongside platform, modernization, security, and operational context. Baker, IBM’s COO of Infrastructure and GM of Systems, wrote that when leaders are accountable for “ROI, uptime, security, cost, and compliance,” they will ask not which tool they bought, but whether they built something enduring. That is an industry executive’s viewpoint, not an independent comparison of platforms; see Baker’s article in IBM Newsroom.

Agentic AI adds a software-market question
Autonomous or agentic systems raise a further question: what happens to the economics of software when AI can perform tasks that users previously carried out through conventional software? Gartner’s public abstract, published 11 August 2026, forecasts that more than $40 billion in software revenue will be exposed to agentic arbitrage between 2026 and 2030. “Exposed” is the key qualification: this is a forecast about potential software revenue exposure, not a report of losses already realized or a measure of all enterprise AI outcomes. The full research is access restricted; the public abstract is at Gartner.
The gold-rush metaphor has limits
Chaudhary’s “AI gold rush is ending” headline captures a shift in emphasis, but it should be read as his viewpoint rather than a measured conclusion that enterprise adoption has stopped. The cited sources offer different kinds of evidence: executive commentary, vendor-published material, a vendor-sponsored study, and a Gartner forecast. They do not establish a general enterprise AI pilot-failure rate or an all-enterprise realized ROI figure.
The defensible takeaway is narrower and more useful: moving AI into core operations makes integration, governance, cost visibility, and accountability harder to defer. Route reconfiguration means treating those requirements as part of deployment design—not as cleanup after a promising demonstration.
