Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Give every enterprise AI agent that can use tools or access company data a distinct, accountable identity; authorize only the specific actions and resources its job requires; and keep records that connect the agent’s actions to downstream systems. An identity tells you which agent is acting, but it does not by itself authorize an action or prove what a connected application ultimately did.
What do identity, authorization, and audit each establish?
These controls work together, but they answer different questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Identity: Which agent is acting, and which person or team is responsible for operating it?
- Authentication: Is the presented identity genuinely the expected agent?
- Authorization: May that agent perform this action on this resource in this context?
- Audit: What was attempted and executed, under whose authority, and with what result?
A log showing that an agent authenticated does not establish that a particular operation was permitted. Nor does an identity-provider event necessarily show what a downstream tool or application actually changed. A useful control design connects identity and authorization decisions to the records produced by the systems where actions take place.

How should you give an AI agent access to company systems?
Start with a governed, attributable identity
For an agent that can call tools or reach enterprise data, create a distinct nonhuman principal rather than treating it as an anonymous feature or sharing a human account. Associate it with a named owner or sponsoring team, document its purpose and operating environment, and establish how its identity is created, changed, reviewed, disabled, and retired.

Microsoft’s Entra Agent ID guidance describes unique agent identities, strong authentication, managed identities or workload federation, short-lived tokens, access reviews, and audit logs as parts of a least-privilege approach. These are Microsoft platform recommendations; equivalent mechanisms and labels vary across providers. Choose an authentication method supported by the platforms the agent must access, and avoid handing the agent a person’s password or general-purpose credentials.
Carry delegated user context without giving away user credentials
If an agent needs to act for a user, use supported identity mechanisms to convey the relevant delegated context. Downstream services should evaluate that context and enforce their own authorization rules. AWS’s Agentic AI Lens, for example, describes embedding user context in workload access tokens so downstream services can apply user-level authorization without receiving the user’s credentials. This is an architectural example, not a claim that every platform implements delegation the same way.

How do you limit what an AI agent can do?
Scope permissions to the task, tool, and resource
Define the agent’s permitted actions and target resources from its actual workflow. Grant access because the task requires it—not because a permission might be convenient later. Prefer narrow scopes and allowlisted tool actions over broad standing access, and revisit them when the workflow, connected tools, resources, or operating context changes.
Authorization should be checked at the action boundary: a valid agent identity is not a blanket permission to invoke every tool or perform every operation that tool exposes. Where a user’s authority is delegated, downstream services should still decide whether the requested action is allowed for the relevant user and resource.

- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- USB TYPE C Connectivity & DONGLE Design: Designed for PCs, Macs, laptops, iPhones, and Android devices that utilize a USB-C port. Plug and stay, or carry it on a keychain. (Item Size: 0.73 x 0.60 x 0.30 inches)
- Enhanced MFA (FIDO2 & TOTP/HOTP): Strengthen your security with flexible options. Use the Manager App to access TOTP/HOTP features for accounts that do not yet support FIDO2.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID. NFC functionality is not supported.
Require fresh approval for consequential operations
For irreversible or high-impact actions—such as deleting data, making a purchase, deploying a change, or altering permissions—require a fresh, specific human confirmation at the point of action. A broad standing grant is not the same as consent to a particular consequential operation. Microsoft’s guidance recommends explicit authorization for each tool and fresh confirmation for high-impact actions; implement those controls in the context of the platform and workflow involved.
Review grants as the agent changes
Track changes to agent blueprints, credentials, permission grants, and role assignments. Ask the sponsor to attest periodically that the agent is still needed and correctly configured. Microsoft’s best-practices guidance suggests sponsor attestations on a 6–12 month cadence; this is vendor guidance, not a universal regulatory interval. A workflow or access change may warrant review sooner.

What should an AI-agent audit trail capture?
Keep enough detail to reconstruct both the agent’s decision path at the system boundary and the resulting operation. A practical record should capture:
- The agent identity and, where relevant, its role or effective scope.
- The action attempted or executed and the target resource.
- The delegated “on behalf of” user, when applicable.
- A correlation identifier that can connect the agent event to related records.
- The outcome, including whether the operation was denied or completed.
Join these records to the downstream application and cloud audit events. The agent’s own record may show a tool call, while the target service’s record establishes what it accepted or changed. Microsoft’s least-privilege guidance discusses agent audit fields and revocation; AWS’s Agentic AI Lens describes using CloudTrail usage data to derive least-privilege baselines. Treat those as platform-specific examples rather than interchangeable logging capabilities.

How do you implement and verify the controls?
- Inventory: Record each agent, its owner or sponsor, identity, authentication path, tools, resources, and environments.
- Set authority: Define task-specific scopes and allowed tool actions; remove access that is not required.
- Configure delegation: Where needed, pass user context through supported identity mechanisms and ensure downstream services enforce authorization.
- Protect consequential actions: Put fresh, action-specific approval checks at the boundary for high-impact or irreversible operations.
- Connect records: Capture the agent, effective authority, action, resource, correlation identifier, delegated user when relevant, and result; verify that events can be joined with downstream logs.
- Review changes and ownership: Monitor identity and permission changes, and have a sponsor attest that the agent remains necessary and properly configured.
- Test shutdown and revocation: Disable the agent, rotate or invalidate credentials and tokens as appropriate, remove stale grants, and verify that downstream systems no longer accept the revoked access.
Revocation is not complete merely because an agent has been marked disabled in one control plane. Validate the effect where its credentials and permissions could still be used.
How should teams compare agent identity and authorization designs?
Use these criteria to compare architectures or platform implementations; they are evaluation questions, not a product ranking.
| Area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Identity and accountability | Does each agent have a unique identity and an identifiable owner or sponsor? |
| Lifecycle | Can the team create, review, disable, and retire identities, with sponsor review of continuing need? |
| Permission granularity | Can access be limited to needed tools, actions, and resources? How does delegated user authority reach downstream services? |
| Action authorization | Is authorization evaluated at each relevant tool or action boundary? |
| Human approval | Can high-impact actions require fresh, specific confirmation? |
| Audit and correlation | Do records identify the agent, authority, action, resource, delegated user where relevant, and outcome—and connect to downstream events? |
| Revocation and review | Can teams test that access is actually removed downstream and periodically review grants? |
Is there a finalized NIST standard for AI-agent identity?
No final NIST agent-identity standard is established by the cited announcement. On February 5, 2026, NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence announced the concept paper Accelerating the Adoption of Software and Artificial Intelligence Agent Identity and Authorization and invited input on a potential project. That is exploratory work, not a finalized standard or binding requirement. Organizations can apply identity, authorization, and audit controls now without representing the concept-paper effort as a completed standard.
