In Enshrouded, fast travel comes from two kinds of nodes: world-built Ancient Spires and player-built Flame Altars. Climb a Spire and commune with the Flame at its summit to unlock it on the map; craft an Altar with five stone after the base-claim quest unlocks its recipe. For terrain that must survive a reset, work inside an active Flame Altar’s illuminated building boundary.

Fast travel in Enshrouded: the two node types
Your inner Flame is the system that makes travel possible. The Flame tutorial describes it this way: “Your inner Flame illuminates paths, grants access to Ancient Spires and enables Fast Travel.” The practical distinction is that Spires are fixed destinations placed in the world, while Altars are objects you choose to place near your own projects.

| How it becomes a destination | Complete the climb and commune with the summit Flame | Place the Altar; it functions as a player-created fast-travel point |
| Protected building area | No player base boundary | Yes, an illuminated volume around the Altar |
| Permanent terrain work | Not a protected building zone | Landscaping inside the building range remains |
| Typical travel role | Regional hub and elevated launch point for gliding | Convenient return point beside a base, route or remote project |
| Unlock or placement work | Climbing puzzles, locked doors, traps and a summit interaction | Collect five stone, then place the crafted Altar in a suitable safe area |
Unlocking a Spire early gives you a reliable regional starting point for gliding and exploration. An Altar is more flexible because you decide where it goes, but its value depends on placing it where the protected volume covers the work you intend to keep.
How to unlock an Ancient Spire
1. Reach the tower
Ancient Spires are tall, fixed structures that serve as landmarks. Approach one from the ground and look for the route upward rather than assuming the exterior can be climbed in a straight line. The ascent is designed as a traversal puzzle.

2. Solve the ascent
Progress through the tower by combining normal movement with the available climbing and traversal tools. Expect locked doors, traps and changes in elevation. A blocked route usually means that a switch, side platform or alternate passage has not yet been found; it is not evidence that the Spire is unavailable.
3. Reach the summit Flame
At the top, interact with the Flame. Reaching the roof is not enough by itself: the summit interaction is the event that registers the Spire as a fast-travel destination and reveals regional landmarks associated with it.
4. Confirm the map destination
Once the summit Flame has been lit, open the world map and look for the Spire’s destination marker. The Fast Travel quest specifically directs you to select the Ancient Spire on the map after lighting its summit Flame. If the marker is absent, return to the summit and make sure the Flame interaction completed rather than merely passing the location.
5. Use the Spire as a regional launch point
After activation, treat the tower as the starting point for that region. Arriving high above the surrounding terrain lets you glide toward nearby landmarks, resource areas and quest locations instead of walking the entire distance from your base. Unlocking each accessible Spire early reduces the amount of repeated ground travel later.
How to fast-travel after a node is unlocked
- Open the world map.
- Identify an activated Ancient Spire or a placed Flame Altar.
- Select the destination marker.
- Confirm the fast-travel command shown by the map interface.
A Spire only appears as a usable destination after its summit Flame interaction. An Altar becomes useful as a destination once it has been placed at your chosen site. Keep the map open long enough to distinguish an activated node from an unexplored landmark; discovering a tower from a distance does not perform the summit unlock.

For efficient routing, make the first trip to a new region an activation run: reach the Spire, complete its climb, light the Flame and then use the tower for subsequent gliding or map travel. Place an Altar near a long-term base or a remote operation when you expect to return repeatedly.

Craft the Altar
The official Altar recipe cited for this guide is five stone. The recipe becomes available after the base-claim quest unlocks it. Gather the material before leaving your starting area so you can establish a return point as soon as the quest permits.
Choose a safe location outside the Shroud
For a durable base and permanent landscaping, place the Altar in a safe area outside the Shroud. The Altar claims the illuminated building volume around it, so the location determines which foundations, tunnels and terraces can be protected. Avoid dropping it beside a project and discovering later that the far side of the build falls outside the boundary.
Use the Altar as a personal destination
Once placed, the object serves two jobs: it marks a player-controlled base area and acts as a fast-travel node. Good sites include a main settlement, a staging camp beside a difficult quest region, a mining route you revisit often, or a remote construction project that would otherwise require a long approach each time.
Plan before you dig
Terrain permanence follows the Altar boundary, not the visual extent of a building. Mark the likely footprint of the finished project first, then position the Altar so the entire excavation and all structural supports fit inside its protected volume. Moving the Altar after major work can leave part of the project outside the area that preserves landscaping.

Where terraforming remains permanent
The boundary is the rule
The building tutorial states: “Landscaping inside the building range will remain.” In practice, the illuminated range around an active Flame Altar is the protected area for terrain reshaping. Cutting a hollow, filling a depression, leveling a foundation or shaping a terrace inside that range is treated as part of the permanent base.
What happens outside the boundary
Terrain edits outside the protected range are not covered by that permanence rule. The relevant wiki notes that those changes can reset under the world-reset or restart conditions that apply to the game. If a road, quarry entrance or decorative slope matters to the finished design, bring it inside the Altar’s range instead of relying on an unprotected edit.
Prepare the site, then build
Use the terrain-editing controls inside the boundary to cut, fill or level the ground. After the surface is ready, switch to the Construction Hammer for blocks and blueprints. Separating the two stages makes it easier to see whether a problem is a terrain edit or a construction placement: first establish the permanent landform, then anchor the structure to it.
Protect underground and terraced designs
An underground hall needs horizontal coverage as well as surface coverage. Place the Altar so the protected volume contains the planned entrance, every chamber and the connecting excavation. The same principle applies to a hillside settlement: a terrace that projects beyond the boundary may not receive the same persistence as the terraces directly around the Altar.

| Flame level | Example maximum volume | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | 40 × 40 × 40 | Suitable for a compact starter base or a tightly planned excavation |
| Level 2 | 80 × 80 × 80 | Allows a substantially wider footprint and deeper multi-room work |
| Level 3 | 120 × 120 × 120 | Provides room for broad compounds, terraces or larger underground layouts |
| Level 4 | 160 × 160 × 160 | Supports the largest example protected volume listed for this progression |
These are dimensions, not a guarantee that every build can occupy a perfect cube without obstruction. Treat them as a planning envelope: check the actual illuminated boundary in your world, leave room for approaches and vertical changes, and strengthen the Flame before starting a project that depends on the larger range.
A reliable terraforming and construction workflow
- Survey the site. Walk the proposed footprint and identify the highest and lowest points, likely entrances, resource paths and any section that must remain untouched.
- Place the Flame Altar. Set it outside the Shroud in a safe position from which the illuminated range covers the intended project.
- Check the boundary before editing. Move around the perimeter and verify that the planned excavation, foundations and landscaping are inside the active building range.
- Strengthen the Flame when needed. If the projected build exceeds the current volume, upgrade before removing large amounts of terrain rather than trying to extend protection afterward.
- Shape the terrain. Use the terrain-editing options to cut high ground, fill low ground and level building pads. Perform the permanent earthwork while you are inside the Altar boundary.
- Place structural elements. Equip the Construction Hammer and add blocks or blueprints to the prepared surface.
- Test the edges. Inspect outer walls, lower tunnels and upper terraces for sections that cross the boundary. Move the Altar or adjust the design before investing in detail work.
- Use the node for travel. With the base established, the Altar becomes a convenient map destination for supply runs and later construction sessions.
Choosing between a Spire and an Altar
Choose an Ancient Spire when elevation and regional reach matter
A Spire is the better first objective in an unfamiliar region. Its summit is already elevated, and the activated tower provides a launch point for gliding toward landmarks spread across the surrounding area. The cost is an obstacle course: you must complete the climb and the summit Flame interaction before the travel benefit exists.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choose a Flame Altar when you need control over the destination
An Altar is the practical choice for a place you intend to revisit or develop. You decide its location, it claims a protected building area, and it doubles as a return point. Its travel utility is local to the site you selected; unlike a Spire, it does not come with a fixed tower or summit, so any gliding advantage depends on the terrain and construction at that location.
Combine them for an efficient region
Use the Spire as the high regional gateway and an Altar as the low, persistent base. A common pattern is to activate the Spire first, glide to the intended settlement area, place the Altar there, and then use each node for a different leg of future trips.
Common problems and fixes
The Ancient Spire is visible but not on the fast-travel map
- Return to the summit and interact with the Flame; reaching the top without completing that interaction does not unlock the destination.
- Check the map after the interaction and select the newly registered Spire, as directed by the Fast Travel quest.
- If doors or traps stopped the ascent, search for the alternate route or mechanism in the tower instead of treating the landmark as activated.
A landscaping change reverted
- Check whether the edited spot was inside the Altar’s illuminated building range when you made the change.
- If it was outside, move the Altar or extend the protected project area before repeating the excavation.
- Remember that unprotected edits can reset under the applicable world-reset or restart conditions.
The build will not fit inside the Altar area
- Measure the project in three dimensions, including underground rooms and elevated terraces.
- Strengthen the Flame to increase the protected volume, then recheck the actual boundary.
- Reduce the footprint, move the Altar to a more central location, or divide the work into separate planned areas rather than leaving critical terrain outside protection.
The Altar recipe is unavailable
Complete the base-claim quest that unlocks the recipe, then gather the required five stone. The recipe is tied to that progression step, so collecting stone before the unlock does not make the crafting option appear early.
Best Value
You cannot decide how many Altars to place
Altar-count limits and related progression values are version-sensitive. A fixed number is not established here; check the current game’s build interface and the latest official information for the version you are playing. Plan each placement around a real travel or construction need rather than assuming that every spare location should receive an Altar.

Version-sensitive details to verify
Two kinds of numbers in this system can change as the game is patched: progression tables and placement limits. The example protected dimensions above come from an Altar progression listing and should be checked against the live build. The total number of Flame Altars you may place, as well as any current Spire count, should likewise be confirmed in the version you are running. This is especially important for a long-term world: a change to the boundary or limit can affect a plan that was designed around older values.
The underlying workflow is more stable than any one table: activate a Spire by completing its summit Flame interaction; use Altars as player-controlled travel and building nodes; and keep permanent terrain work inside the active Altar boundary.
Pre-build and travel checklist
- Record the first accessible Spire on your map and finish its summit interaction.
- Before placing an Altar, walk the complete proposed project footprint, including its vertical extent.
- Confirm that the Altar sits outside the Shroud and that the illuminated range covers the work area.
- Strengthen the Flame before beginning an excavation that approaches the current volume limit.
- Use terrain tools first and the Construction Hammer for blocks and blueprints afterward.
- Test the map destination immediately after activating a Spire or placing an Altar.
- Recheck altar limits, Spire availability and protected-volume values after major game updates.
Bottom line
Unlock Ancient Spires by climbing their traversal puzzles and communing with the Flame at the summit, then select the activated tower from the map for fast travel and regional gliding. Craft Flame Altars with five stone after the base-claim quest, place them where you intend to build or return frequently, and perform every important cut, fill and level operation inside their illuminated boundary. Strengthening the Flame expands that protected volume; version-sensitive limits and dimensions should be verified in the current game before a major build.
