Enshrouded has no permanent character classes. You earn skill points through levelling and quests, then distribute them among six core stats. For a reliable first session, craft a Stone Axe and Stone Pickaxe, place a Flame Altar on level ground outside the Shroud, and make rescuing the Blacksmith your first major objective. The Blacksmith unlocks the Glider and Grappling Hook, which transform early exploration.

What to do first in Enshrouded
Your opening priorities are deliberately simple:
- Collect wood and stone.
- Craft a Stone Axe using 5 Wood and 5 Stone.
- Craft a Stone Pickaxe.
- Place a Flame Altar on flat, Shroud-free ground near useful resources.
- Create a roofed, enclosed shelter so you can receive the Rested buff while inside.
- Follow the early objective that leads to the Blacksmith.
This order gives you a safe operating point, basic gathering tools and a clear exploration goal. Do not build your first permanent home in the fog. You need access to Shroud areas for quests and materials, but the altar and shelter should remain outside the dangerous mist.
Enshrouded classes explained: there are no locked classes
Enshrouded does not assign a fixed class that permanently determines your equipment or abilities. Skill points earned from levelling and quests can be spent freely. You can therefore begin as a melee fighter, invest in magic later, and add ranged or survival-oriented skills as your needs change.

The skill system is organized around six core statistics. The practical choice is not “Which class is strongest?” but “Which attributes solve the problems I expect to face next?”

Spend early points according to the way you actually play rather than trying to reproduce an internet “meta.” A player who repeatedly runs out of health has a different priority from one who survives comfortably but lacks mana. Keep your choices coherent enough that your equipment and stats support the same combat distance.

There is no evidence-based universal winner. Secondary guides disagree: one calls Warrior an excellent beginner option while recommending a Mage opening; another describes a Sword and Board Warrior as the most forgiving choice and calls Ranger the safest opener, while also noting that Ranger is weakest in caves. These are recommendations, not an official ranking, and their skill counts and balance assumptions may change with the 1.0 patch.

For a first character, choose the combat distance you can execute consistently. If you are undecided, begin with a forgiving melee setup, add Constitution or Endurance when survival is the problem, and specialize after you have seen which situations defeat you. Nothing in the class system requires you to restart solely because your first few points were imperfect.
How to evaluate a build without a tier list
- Survivability: Constitution raises maximum health; Endurance raises stamina. These stats directly address mistakes and long movement sequences.
- Damage type: Strength supports melee, Intelligence supports magic, and Dexterity supports ranged attacks.
- Resource pressure: Spirit supports mana-based play, while Intelligence is also tied to Water Aura.
- Terrain: A choice that works in open ground may feel different in a cave. The Ranger cave warning is a reminder to test a build in the places you actually explore.
- Reset assumptions: Do not assume a pre-1.0 skill layout or archetype count will remain unchanged. Verify the live tree after launch.
First base: where to place your Flame Altar
The Flame Altar is your first construction milestone. Place it on flat ground free of the Shroud, close enough to resources and the edge of Shroud territory that quests and gathering trips are practical. The correct compromise is a safe base outside the fog with a short route to the dangerous areas, not a settlement inside the mist.
A placement checklist
- Stand on level terrain so the altar and initial shelter can be built without awkward foundations.
- Confirm that the location is not covered by the Shroud.
- Check that ordinary resources are nearby; a base that requires a long walk for every basic material wastes early time.
- Keep the Shroud edge within reach for objectives and higher-value gathering, but leave yourself a safe route home.
- Reserve enough room for a roofed, enclosed shelter and later crafting expansion.
A shelter is not merely decoration. Being inside a roofed and enclosed structure grants the Rested buff. Build a small, complete room first, then expand once your tools and NPCs are established. A compact shelter near the altar is easier to use repeatedly than an ambitious structure you cannot finish.

Why altar upgrades matter
Strengthening the Flame Altar improves character power, increases the time you can spend in the Shroud and grants more fast-travel points. Those benefits make upgrades a progression objective rather than a cosmetic project. When deciding between another decorative addition and an altar improvement, the altar provides the more direct exploration value.
One secondary guide states that two Flame Altars can be built and that the number can be expanded through upgrades. Treat that as a guide-specific detail rather than a guaranteed 1.0 rule; confirm the current altar limit and upgrade requirements in the live game.
Opening sequence: a step-by-step route
1. Gather the first materials
Collect wood and stone before committing to a location. You need 5 Wood and 5 Stone for the Stone Axe, and stone for the first Flame Altar. Gathering before placement lets you choose a safe site based on terrain and resources rather than stopping at the first available patch.
2. Craft the Stone Axe
Use the initial wood and stone to craft a Stone Axe. This is the first stated tool recipe: 5 Wood plus 5 Stone. Keep it available for gathering and avoid spending the entire starting stock on construction before the altar is down.
3. Craft the Stone Pickaxe
Craft the Stone Pickaxe as your second basic tool. The supplied recipe information does not establish its material cost, so consult the in-game crafting panel for the current requirement instead of relying on an old guide. The important early goal is to have both basic gathering tools before you begin a longer building or exploration loop.
4. Place the Flame Altar
Move to the chosen flat, Shroud-free site and place the first Flame Altar. 5. Finish a minimal shelter
Build walls and a roof around a usable interior so the shelter is enclosed. Confirm that you can stand inside it and receive the Rested buff. Do not delay the shelter indefinitely while collecting decorative materials; its early value is the buff and a dependable place to recover between trips.
6. Follow the Blacksmith objective
Make the Blacksmith your first major NPC rescue target. The reward is unusually valuable at the start of the game: the Glider and Grappling Hook are the two biggest early mobility unlocks identified by the available guides. They expand the routes you can take and reduce the number of obstacles that turn an ordinary resource trip into a long detour.

The Blacksmith comes first because of the mobility unlocks. A separate early-game checklist identifies five critical NPCs overall:
- Blacksmith: prioritize first for the Glider and Grappling Hook.
- Alchemist: the next name on the checklist for continued progression.
- Farmer: an important later rescue in the same checklist.
- Carpenter: another critical specialist to locate.
- Hunter: completes the five-NPC priority list.
The checklist establishes importance, not a universal order for the final four. If an objective, resource route or current build makes another specialist immediately accessible, use that opportunity while keeping the Blacksmith as the opening priority.
Managing the Shroud and your first excursions
The Shroud should shape your base and route planning from the beginning. You need to enter it for quests and resources, but your home should remain outside it. Treat every trip as a loop: leave from the altar, complete a defined objective, then return to the shelter rather than wandering until you are forced into an emergency retreat.
- Use the altar as the fixed reference point for departures and returns.
- Keep the first excursions short enough that you can learn the route before attempting deeper exploration.
- When a path repeatedly costs too much health, stamina or time, improve the altar or change your approach instead of simply repeating the same failed run.
- Use the shelter’s Rested buff before a difficult outing.
- After the Blacksmith rescue, test the Glider and Grappling Hook on ordinary routes before depending on them for a critical escape.
The exact balance of Shroud exposure and movement may change at 1.0. The enduring principle is risk management: establish a safe return point, improve it, and make each dangerous trip purposeful.

Skill-point decisions during the first levels
Use a problem-first method for spending points:
- Identify the failure that is stopping progress: insufficient health, stamina, mana or damage.
- Match that failure to the relevant stat: Constitution for health, Endurance for stamina, Spirit for mana, or Strength, Intelligence and Dexterity for the corresponding damage type.
- Spend enough points to solve the immediate problem, then reassess after another quest or level.
- Keep your equipment and attack distance aligned with the stat you are emphasizing.
This approach avoids two common errors. The first is investing in a damage type you rarely use. The second is copying a build designed for a different terrain or difficulty expectation. The available guides do not agree on a best path, and no published statistics establish which build is most popular or most successful.
Archetype labels and skill-count warnings
Some guides group the skill tree into four archetypes: Mage, Ranger, Warrior and Survivor. One source lists 50 Mage skills, 53 Ranger skills, 45 Warrior skills and 13 Survivor skills. Those counts are guide-specific and should not be treated as immutable 1.0 specifications. Check the current skill tree after the October 15 release before using a count to plan a build.
Archetype labels are useful for describing play style, but they do not override the free-allocation system. A character can borrow skills across those groupings. Think of the labels as navigation aids for the tree, not as character slots you must select at creation.

Building inside the Shroud
Symptom: your home sits in the fog or your normal recovery routine requires dangerous exposure. Fix: move the altar to flat ground outside the Shroud, keeping the edge close enough for quests and resources.

Symptom: every basic material requires a long trip and the shelter remains unfinished. Fix: favor level terrain near ordinary resources for the first base. Expand or build a second project after your core tools and NPC access are established.
Delaying the Blacksmith
Symptom: exploration feels restricted by gaps and vertical routes. Fix: make the Blacksmith objective the next major target; the Glider and Grappling Hook are the early mobility milestones specifically identified by the guides.
Chasing a “perfect” class
Symptom: you postpone playing or restart because guides disagree. Fix: choose a combat distance, spend points against your actual failures, and adjust as you learn. Enshrouded has no locked class that makes an early choice irreversible.
Trusting pre-launch numbers after 1.0
Symptom: a skill count, balance assumption or altar rule from an older guide does not match your game. Fix: check the 1.0 patch notes and the in-game skill and altar interfaces. Launch-day changes can invalidate secondary-guide details without changing the broader opening priorities.

Enshrouded 1.0 release date and what to verify
Keen Games announced that Enshrouded will leave Early Access on Steam on October 15, 2026. An official Keen Games news item dated August 31, 2026 repeats that date; the earlier official announcement is dated June 25, 2026. Earlier plans targeted spring 2026, and Game Informer coverage through Steam news later narrowed the window to fall before the exact day was announced.
