The University of Glasgow says the proposed payload will include 10 ml of fluid, a nanophotonic chemical sensor described as an artificial “tongue,” and a fragment of whisky-cask wood. The mission is intended to investigate how chemical processes can be monitored in orbit and demonstrate how ethanol might be produced or extracted there.
What the Glasgow–Kyushu project plans to do
The University of Glasgow’s James Watt School of Engineering is leading the project with Japan’s Kyushu Institute of Technology. Dr Gilles Bailet is the project lead. The university says seven final-year Glasgow mechanical engineering students are working with Japanese colleagues on the system, including its battery, radio and onboard computers.

The university’s 2026 announcement describes a planned 2028 CubeSat launch and an investigation lasting up to five years. It says the payload is expected to carry 10 ml of fluid. These are project plans, not a confirmed launch or completed experiment. The announcement does not detail the final payload configuration or containment arrangements.

A sensor to monitor chemical change
One strand uses nanophotonic sensing technology previously developed by Dr Alasdair Clark. The university describes the device as an artificial “tongue” that will detect changes in the whisky sample’s composition. The sensor is meant to help the team monitor chemical evolution in orbit, rather than judge a finished drink’s taste.

- THE OFFICIAL WHISKY GLASS - In the long and illustrious history of whisky, there has never been a single definitive glass that the whisky world could call its own. Now, following in the tradition of Scottish innovation, the Glencairn Glass has arrived. The Glencairn Glass’ roots lie in the traditional nosing and tasting glasses used by master blenders and connoisseurs around the world.
- ENHANCING YOUR WHISKY EXPERIENCE - The unique and stylish shape has been crafted with eminent care to enhance the enjoyment of single malts and aged blends. The tapered mouth allows and ease of drinking not associated with traditional nosing glasses. While capturing that all-important bouquet. The wide bowl allows the fullest appreciation of the whisky’s colour and the solid base is designed to be easy on the hand.
- CRYSTAL WHISKY GLASSES - The Glencairn Glass can be found at major whisky festivals around the world and in many serious whisky bars. The glass is also used in distilleries across the globe. Since its launch in 2001 the glass has won numerous awards including the Queens Award for Innovation. Today, over 3 million glasses are sold annually and sales continue to grow.

A separate test of cask wood
The proposed payload also includes a fragment of whisky-cask wood. The team intends to monitor how it responds to the rapid temperature changes of orbital flight, described in the announcement as hot-and-cold cycles about every 90 minutes. The researchers expect the wood to respond differently in this environment, but that is a prediction to test, not a measured finding.
Why study whisky-making processes in orbit?
Whisky offers a familiar model for studying chemical and biological processes. Bailet said, “Whisky gives us a very recognisable, very well-understood model for studying and monitoring biological and chemical processes in microgravity.” The project’s wider aim is to learn how such processes can be monitored and controlled in space, and to demonstrate how ethanol can be made or extracted in orbit.

That ambition is relevant to future orbital chemistry and biomanufacturing. Bailet has pointed to possible applications such as producing high-value pharmaceuticals, including cancer therapeutics. Those are potential future applications, not outcomes established by this whisky project; the announcement reports no therapeutic results.
NASA describes the International Space Station as a long-duration near-weightlessness environment for physical-science research. In such settings, forces other than gravity can become more influential, which gives researchers a reason to examine how physical systems behave. That general context does not predict what the Glasgow–Kyushu experiment will find.

How this differs from the earlier Ardbeg experiment
Whisky-related research has flown before, but an earlier Ardbeg project and the proposed CubeSat mission are not the same experiment. Ardbeg’s project white paper describes samples of Scotch malt distillate paired with charred oak in MixStix containers, alongside a terrestrial control. Its focus was maturation chemistry, including naturally occurring terpenes and the extraction of flavour-active compounds from oak—not distilling whisky in orbit.
The white paper says the samples returned to Earth on 12 September 2014 after 971 days in microgravity. It describes the project as a model for investigating microgravity’s effect on flavour profile and looking for novel compounds or flavours. The Glasgow–Kyushu announcement instead describes a future CubeSat, onboard nanophotonic sensing and a cask-wood test that it characterizes as direct exposure to space vacuum.

What is known—and what remains a plan
The university’s announcement establishes the project’s stated aims and reported schedule, but it does not establish that the CubeSat has launched, that whisky has been distilled in space, or that the experiment has produced measurements. It also does not specify a launch provider or report final approvals. The project’s support includes a grant from distillery-design consultancy Allen Associates for an initial Japan visit and continued project development, as well as support from student societies including GU Orbit.
