It does not automatically encrypt every note, every piece of metadata, or information displayed on an unlocked device. The protection depends on which notes and data types the app covers, how its keys are managed, and how you have configured it.
What end-to-end encryption means in a notes app
With E2EE, the service provider is not supposed to hold the keys needed to decrypt protected content. Your trusted devices—or recovery mechanisms you control—are responsible for access. That differs from encryption in transit, which protects data moving between your device and a service, and encryption at rest, which protects stored data but may still let the provider decrypt it.

Apple’s iCloud documentation distinguishes standard data protection from Advanced Data Protection (ADP). Under standard protection, Apple says it holds keys for many data categories and can help with recovery. With ADP enabled, Notes is among the iCloud categories protected end-to-end, and Apple says it does not hold the keys needed to recover that protected data. See Apple’s iCloud data security overview and ADP privacy information.

How encryption works in Apple Notes
Apple describes two distinct protections: locking an individual note and enabling account-level ADP. They are not the same setting, and one should not be assumed to secure every note or iCloud category.

Locking a specific note
Apple says a user can lock selected notes with a device passcode or a separate note password. It describes secure notes as end-to-end encrypted: note content and supported attachments are encrypted with AES-GCM, using a 16-byte key derived from the passphrase with PBKDF2 and SHA-256. Those algorithm details describe the implementation; they do not establish how every field or every note is protected.
Apple lists images, sketches, tables, maps, and websites among the supported attachment types for secure notes. Other attachment types cannot be added to them. Creation and modification dates are not encrypted. See Apple’s Notes security documentation for the feature’s stated scope.

Protecting iCloud Notes with ADP
ADP changes the protection applied to iCloud data categories, including Notes, for an account with the feature enabled. Apple’s standard data protection remains its default according to its iCloud overview; locking a note and enabling ADP therefore address different scopes.

What E2EE protects—and what it does not
What it can protect
When the app’s implementation and your configuration cover a note, E2EE can prevent the service provider from decrypting its protected content. The claim applies to the covered data and the provider’s access to it—not to every way information might be exposed.
What it does not guarantee
- That every note is covered. A feature may apply only to selected locked notes, or account-level protection may require an opt-in setting. Check the app’s stated scope and your settings.
- That every field is encrypted. Apple specifically says secure-note creation and modification dates are not encrypted. Its iCloud overview also describes metadata and usage information that may remain outside end-to-end protection.
- Protection from an exposed device. If a note is visible on an unlocked, compromised, or shared device, encryption cannot prevent someone with access to that device from seeing it. The same applies if you deliberately copy, export, photograph, or show the content.
- Guaranteed recovery. Encryption does not recreate keys that are lost. Under ADP, Apple says it cannot recover protected data on your behalf; losing access to your trusted devices and recovery methods may mean losing access to the data.
- Security based only on an algorithm name. Key custody, implementation, local storage, backups, sharing, recovery, and metadata all shape the real protection boundary.
How to compare notes apps’ encryption claims
Do not rank apps by an algorithm name alone. Look for current technical documentation and compare the actual coverage and trade-offs. Standard Notes, for example, publishes an encryption specification, an explanation of how it secures notes, and documentation about device encryption. These are vendor descriptions, not a basis for declaring a universal winner.

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Default or opt-in coverage | Find out whether E2EE covers every note, only selected notes, or only notes after a separate account setting is enabled. |
| Content and metadata scope | Check whether text, attachments, tags, timestamps, previews, search indexes, and usage data are covered. Apple documents both attachment limits and unencrypted dates for secure notes. |
| Key custody and recovery | Determine whether the provider can decrypt data to restore it, or whether access depends on trusted devices and recovery methods you control. |
| Device and offline storage | Review how decrypted content is stored locally and what protections apply to the app’s database and device lock. Standard Notes distinguishes local storage configurations and says biometrics are not cryptographically backed protection in the context described in its device documentation. |
| Sharing, attachments, and platforms | Encryption may affect which file types, sharing features, or devices are supported. Confirm the limits that apply to the features you actually use. |
| Evidence quality | Prefer a current technical specification and platform security documentation. An independent review is useful only when its scope and date are clear; the cited materials do not establish a comparable independent audit across the named services. |
Recovery is part of the security trade-off
When the provider does not hold decryption keys, it may not be able to restore protected data after you lose your own access. Before enabling a feature such as ADP, understand which trusted devices, recovery contact, or recovery key you will need and keep those recovery paths available. Apple’s ADP information explains the user’s responsibility for recovery.
This is not a flaw unique to a particular notes app: it is the consequence of keeping decryption capability away from the provider. A recovery process that lets the provider unlock everything may be convenient, but it changes who can access the data.
