Then select the intended input and test it. If access is already allowed, check the mute switch, connection, and input level instead.
First, check the microphone and its connection
Before changing settings, make sure the microphone or headset is connected and switched on. For wireless equipment, confirm it is paired and connected. Check for a physical mute switch or a headset boom that may mute the microphone when raised. These checks are part of Microsoft’s recommended troubleshooting sequence (Microsoft: Fix microphone problems).

Allow microphone access in Windows
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone.
- If the app appears in the list, turn on access for it. For conventional desktop programs, also turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone. Desktop apps are not individually controlled in the app list.
These are separate controls: enabling device access alone does not necessarily enable app access. See Microsoft’s Windows microphone permission instructions.

Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access for this device and Allow apps to access your microphone.
- Allow the relevant app or desktop apps as needed.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. Its settings path differs from Windows 11.

Allow microphone access on a Mac
macOS Ventura or later
- Quit the app that needs the microphone.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- Turn on access for the app, reopen it, and test the microphone.
macOS Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, or Mojave
Open Apple menu > System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Microphone, then enable the app. Apple says these audio-input permissions also cover external USB microphones and audio interfaces. If one of those devices still does not work, check its manufacturer’s software updates and compatibility information. See Apple’s Mac audio recording guidance, published May 27, 2026.
Allow microphone access for a browser site
A browser-based service can be blocked even when the operating system allows the browser to use the microphone. When the site asks, allow access. If you previously blocked it, open that site’s permissions in the browser and change its microphone setting; the exact menu labels vary by browser and may change over time. Microsoft provides examples for Edge, Chrome, and Firefox with Microsoft 365 for the web and explains Windows and Edge privacy controls.

Where the browser offers a device choice, select the microphone you intend to use, then reload the site or retry the call. The site permission is distinct from the operating system’s permission.

Test the microphone in Windows
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, choose the microphone you want to use.
- Use Start test, speak normally, stop the test, and play the recorded sample.
- If the sample is too quiet, adjust the input volume and test again.
If no input device appears, check its connection and use Windows’ input troubleshooting options. Microsoft outlines the test and troubleshooting steps in Fix microphone problems.

Check the calling app
Many calling apps have their own microphone selector and mute control. In Teams, check the microphone dropdown and use its test call if available; it records and plays back a short sample. Microsoft notes that the test-call feature is unavailable in Teams for web. See Microsoft Teams microphone troubleshooting.
Match the fix to what you see
| Symptom | What to check |

| The app or site cannot access the microphone | Check operating-system access, the app’s permission, and the specific website’s browser permission. |
| The microphone is missing from the input list | Check the cable or wireless connection, pairing, and whether the device is recognized by the operating system. |
| The device appears, but nobody can hear you | Check the physical and in-app mute controls, select the intended input, and run a recording or test call. |
| The test recording is faint | Raise the input volume and repeat the test while speaking normally. |
When the microphone still does not appear
If the operating system does not detect the device, focus on the connection, pairing, sound-device configuration, and the platform’s device troubleshooting guidance rather than changing unrelated privacy settings. On a Mac, consult the external microphone or audio-interface manufacturer for compatibility and software updates. An external USB microphone is one possible input if the built-in microphone is unavailable or unsuitable, but buying one is not required to change microphone permissions.
