When it’s off, scrolling often falls back to less precise alternatives like scrollbars or trackpoint dragging.
This guide walks you through the exact places Windows 10 and Windows 11 expect the setting—plus the vendor tools and driver checks that usually fix it in minutes.

What Two-Finger Scrolling Is and Why It Matters
Two-finger scrolling lets you move through content by placing two fingers on your touchpad and sliding up/down (and sometimes left/right) to scroll. On modern laptops with Precision Touchpad, Windows exposes this gesture in dedicated gesture settings.

When you enable it, you typically gain more consistent scrolling, fewer accidental taps, and better control in apps like browsers, PDFs, and file explorers.

- Compatible P/N: For L63599-001
- For SB459A22HA .
- Package include: 1x Touchpad.
Prerequisites (Precision Touchpad, Drivers, and Basic Checks)
- Your device should have a supported touchpad. Two-finger gestures are most reliable on Precision Touchpads.
- Use an up-to-date touchpad driver. Missing or outdated drivers often hide the gesture toggle entirely.
- Check that the touchpad isn’t being disabled by a physical switch. Many laptops have a keyboard toggle (often Fn + a touchpad key).
To quickly verify Precision Touchpad support:
- Press Win + R, type
main.cpl, then press Enter. - Open your touchpad properties (wording varies by driver).
- If you see a “Precision Touchpad” label or a gestures panel that matches Windows’ layout, you’re in the right place.
If you don’t find Precision options, use the troubleshooting and driver-update sections below.
Method 1: Enable Two-Finger Scrolling in Windows Settings (Windows 11/10)
This is the most common path on laptops that expose gesture settings through Windows.
Windows 11
- Open Settings (Win + I).
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
- Find the section named Scrolling.
- Enable Two-finger scrolling (toggle to On).
- Optional: adjust Scrolling direction if you prefer natural or reversed scrolling.
Windows 10
- Open Settings (Win + I).
- Go to Devices > Touchpad.
- Under Scroll and zoom, enable Two-finger scrolling.
- Optional: set Scrolling direction (if shown).
If you don’t see “Two-finger scrolling” in Settings, don’t guess—skip to Method 2 or the driver section (Method 5). On some systems the toggle lives in a vendor control panel instead of Windows Settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMethod 2: Enable Two-Finger Scrolling via Mouse/Touchpad Properties
Some laptops expose gesture controls through “Mouse Properties” (even though it’s really the touchpad UI under the hood).
Open touchpad settings from Control Panel
- Press Win + R, type
main.cpl, press Enter. - Look for a tab named something like Device Settings, ELAN, Synaptics, or Touchpad.
- Open Scrolling or Gestures.
- Enable Two-finger scrolling.
- Click Apply > OK.
Common driver keywords that show up here include “Synaptics,” “ELAN,” and “Precision Touchpad.” If you see those, your touchpad likely supports two-finger gestures—you just need the right panel.
Method 3: Use Your Laptop Manufacturer’s Touchpad App
Many brands ship a touchpad app that overrides or extends Windows’ gesture options. If Windows doesn’t show two-finger scrolling, your laptop app often does.

Dell
- Open Dell Touchpad (sometimes installed as part of Dell driver packages).
- Go to Gestures or Scrolling.
- Enable Two-finger scrolling.
- Apply changes and test by two-finger swiping on a webpage.
HP
- Open HP Touchpad Settings or HP System Event Utility (depending on model).
- Find Scrolling or Gestures.
- Turn on Two-finger scrolling.
Lenovo
- Open Lenovo Vantage or the Mouse/Touchpad settings panel.
- Look for touchpad gesture options.
- Enable two-finger scrolling and confirm the scroll direction preference.
ASUS
- Open ASUS Mouse / Touchpad software.
- Go to gesture settings.
- Enable Two-finger scrolling.
Method 4: Confirm the Gesture Setting in Control Panel (Common Labels)
Even when the toggle is missing in Settings, the underlying gesture may exist with a different label.
Try these common equivalents:
| What you look for | Possible label in Windows/UI |
|---|---|
| Two-finger vertical scrolling | Two-finger scrolling, Vertical scrolling |
| Two-finger horizontal scrolling | Two-finger horizontal scrolling or Shift + scroll option |
| Natural/inverted direction | Scrolling direction or Natural scrolling |
If you see horizontal scrolling only, enable both vertical and horizontal if available—or confirm whether the app you’re testing supports horizontal scrolling.
Method 5: If Two-Finger Scrolling Is Missing, Update/Repair Touchpad Drivers
When the toggle doesn’t exist anywhere, it’s often a driver/Precision Touchpad mismatch. Fixing drivers is usually faster than reinstalling Windows.
Update the touchpad driver
- Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
- Find your touchpad entry (common names include HID-compliant touch pad or a vendor name).
- Right-click it and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart the PC after the update completes.
Install the driver your laptop actually needs (recommended)
Windows Update sometimes misses newer touchpad packs. For the best results, download the touchpad driver from your laptop manufacturer for your exact model and Windows version (Windows 10 or Windows 11).
After installing, reboot and re-check Settings > Touchpad.

Re-enable the touchpad in Device Manager
- Open Device Manager.
- Find your touchpad device.
- Right-click it and choose Enable device if that option exists.
Also check if the touchpad is disabled by a hotkey. Many systems use a key combination that temporarily turns off touch input.

Method 6: Adjust Scrolling Direction and Related Gesture Options
Two-finger scrolling can be enabled but still feel wrong if the direction is reversed or if related gestures conflict.
- Natural scrolling: Many users prefer it on (finger movement matches scroll direction).
- Scroll speed: Some touchpad panels let you tune responsiveness.
- Tap-to-click / edge swipes: Enabling or disabling these won’t remove two-finger scrolling, but it can change gesture interpretation.
After changing any scroll direction options, test in multiple apps—Windows File Explorer and a web browser are reliable for spotting subtle behavior differences.
Troubleshooting (When It Still Doesn’t Work)
If you enabled the toggle but two-finger scrolling doesn’t respond, use this order of operations.

Test on a webpage (like a long YouTube comments section) and a document viewer. Some apps handle touch gestures differently.
2) Check if the toggle exists but is effectively overridden
- Reopen Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad (Windows 11) or Devices > Touchpad (Windows 10).
- Confirm Two-finger scrolling is still On after reboot.
- If you installed a vendor touchpad utility, open it and ensure its own Two-finger scrolling toggle is enabled too.
3) Repair Precision Touchpad features
If Windows says nothing about two-finger scrolling, confirm you actually have a Precision Touchpad. If you see only basic pointing devices without Precision features, the driver may be generic or partially installed.
Try uninstalling and reinstalling the touchpad driver:

- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the touchpad device > Uninstall device.
- Restart the PC so Windows reinstalls drivers.
- Then repeat the update with the manufacturer driver if Windows reinstalls generic support only.
4) Make sure you’re using the correct finger motion
Some touchpads interpret two-finger scrolling only when the fingers are spaced naturally (not too close together). Also avoid lifting your fingers—keep contact and use a smooth swipe.

5) Check for accessibility tools or mouse/gesture utilities
Third-party tools that remap gestures can break Windows’ gesture detection. Temporarily disable gesture remappers and retest.
6) Test whether horizontal scrolling is disabled
If two-finger motion scrolls vertically but not horizontally, look for separate horizontal scroll options or alternative behavior like shift+scroll in the touchpad panel.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Enabling two-finger scrolling in one place and changing another app later. Vendor touchpad utilities may override Windows Settings.
- Updating drivers through Device Manager only. It can work, but manufacturer drivers are often more complete for gestures.
- Assuming a missing setting means the touchpad can’t support gestures. It often means you’re missing the right driver panel.
- Testing on a short page. Always test on something that actually scrolls far enough to confirm behavior.
Windows 10 vs Windows 11 Differences
Windows 11 moves most touchpad controls under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad. Windows 10 typically uses Settings > Devices > Touchpad and may label the option under Scroll and zoom.
The layout changes, but the underlying gesture is the same. If you don’t see the toggle, the most productive fix is still driver verification and checking vendor touchpad utilities.
Common FAQs
Why can I’t find two-finger scrolling on my Windows 11 PC?
Your touchpad may not be recognized as a Precision Touchpad, or the vendor gesture app/driver isn’t installed. Update the touchpad driver via the manufacturer support page for your exact model, then check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.

Two-finger scrolling is enabled, but scrolling only works sometimes.
Try a different app to rule out app-specific gesture handling. Also check for utilities that remap gestures, and confirm the touchpad isn’t disabled by a hotkey or power-saving mode.
My two-finger scroll direction is reversed. How do I fix it?
Open the touchpad settings panel (Windows Settings or your vendor utility) and change Scrolling direction / Natural scrolling. Apply changes and test again in a browser.
Does two-finger scrolling work on external mice too?
Two-finger scrolling is a touchpad gesture. External mice use wheel scrolling or button gestures; they won’t use touchpad two-finger swipes unless a third-party tool remaps behavior.

If your laptop supports Precision Touchpad gestures, enabling two-finger scrolling is usually one switch in Windows Settings. If the option is missing, the fix is almost always the touchpad driver (prefer your manufacturer’s driver) or the vendor touchpad app.
Enable the correct toggle, reboot, and test on at least two scrolling apps to confirm it’s working reliably.
