Set Narrator’s punctuation mode to Math

If Narrator is not running, start it with Windows + Ctrl + Enter. In Narrator shortcuts, the Narrator key is usually Caps Lock or Insert, depending on your configuration.

Press Narrator + Alt + ] repeatedly to cycle forward through punctuation modes. Stop when Narrator announces Math. To cycle backward, press Narrator + Alt + [.

The available punctuation modes are Default, Math, Some, Most, and All. Microsoft describes Math as the mode to “Hear most mathematical symbols.” It changes how punctuation and symbols are read; it does not change Narrator’s descriptive verbosity. Change the separate Verbosity level
If you mean how much detail Narrator provides, use its Verbosity level setting instead. Press Windows + Ctrl + N to open Narrator settings, then find Verbosity level and select a level. Microsoft defines this control as selecting “how descriptive Narrator is about what it is reading.” The setting does not select Math punctuation mode.
You can also adjust verbosity without opening Settings: press Narrator + V to increase the level, or Shift + Narrator + V to decrease it.

These are the five levels in Microsoft’s Chapter 7: Customizing Narrator. The numbered levels affect descriptive detail, not the punctuation mode used for mathematical symbols.

Can you change Math reading by touch?
On supported touch devices, a single tap with three fingers changes Narrator verbosity. Microsoft does not document that gesture as a direct way to choose Math punctuation mode. For Math, use the punctuation keyboard shortcut. See Chapter 6: Using Narrator with touch.

Which setting should you use?

Mathematical symbols are not being read as you want: cycle punctuation mode to Math with Narrator + Alt + ].

Narrator gives too little or too much detail about text or controls: change Verbosity level in Narrator settings or use its increase/decrease shortcuts.
