In practice, Android calls its tool the Android Emulator, while Apple calls its Xcode tool Simulator. Virtual devices are useful for repeatable debugging and configuration checks, but they cannot establish how an app will perform or behave on every physical device. Use both virtual and real-device testing, with hardware checks before release.
What do emulator, simulator, and real device mean?
Android Emulator
Android’s official virtual-device tool is called Android Emulator. It lets developers run virtual Android devices on a computer and test across Android versions and screen sizes. Its controls can also configure simulated location, network speed, rotation, and sensor behavior. See Android Developers’ Android Emulator documentation.
Apple Simulator
Apple’s Simulator runs on a Mac and lets developers launch and interact with simulated Apple-platform devices. It is useful for debugging across device configurations, but Apple cautions that it does not reproduce the performance or all the features of physical devices. See Apple’s documentation on simulated and physical devices.
Real device
A real device is the actual phone or tablet running the relevant operating system. It tests the hardware and operating-system combination on that device and is necessary for checks involving hardware-specific capabilities or actual device performance.

The shorthand that an emulator “copies hardware” while a simulator “copies software” is not a dependable universal rule. For practical testing, focus on whether you are using a virtual environment or actual hardware, and follow the platform’s own terminology.
Which should you use?
| Testing need | Emulator or simulator | Real device |
|---|---|---|
| Frequent development checks | Convenient for repeated runs and debugging from a computer. | Requires access to the physical device and a deployment or run setup. |
| Configuration coverage | Android Emulator can vary Android versions, screen sizes, and simulated location, network, rotation, and sensor conditions. | Tests the actual hardware and OS combination on the device in hand. |
| Hardware-specific features | Some features may not be available in Apple Simulator. | Can validate features on the hardware they require. |
| Performance confidence | Useful for functional debugging, but simulated performance should not be treated as physical-device performance. | Needed when the question is how the app performs on actual hardware. |
| Release verification | Useful for broad virtual checks, but not a substitute for physical-device verification. | Use for release-relevant checks before shipping. |
Apple recommends physical-device verification to confirm intended behavior and says hardware-specific features should be tested on hardware. Google likewise advises Android developers to test on a real device before release. A pass in a virtual environment does not prove identical behavior across physical models.

A practical testing workflow
- Start in the virtual environment. Use Android Emulator or Apple Simulator during implementation and debugging. For Android, vary API levels and screen sizes relevant to the app; configure simulated conditions such as location or network speed when those affect the feature under test.
- Mark hardware-dependent checks. Identify functionality that depends on real sensors or other physical capabilities, as well as any behavior Apple Simulator does not provide. Schedule these checks on the required hardware rather than interpreting a virtual pass as coverage.
- Verify release behavior on devices. Run the important user flows and hardware-specific checks on physical devices before release. Google’s guidance is direct: “Always test your Android app on a real device before releasing it to users.” See Android Developers: Run apps on a hardware device.
- Investigate differences in the right build and conditions. Apple notes that launching with a debugger can make behavior differ from the user experience. For iOS network testing, Apple documents Network Link Conditioner as a way to simulate slow or unreliable connections; consult Apple’s release-build testing guidance.
What virtual testing cannot establish
- Real-world performance: Apple explicitly warns that Simulator does not reproduce physical-device performance. Do not infer frame rate, responsiveness, or resource behavior on physical devices from a simulator result.
- Every hardware feature: Some hardware-specific features are unavailable in Simulator. Test those features using the physical hardware they depend on; Apple’s guidance is at Running your app on simulated or physical devices.
- Broad device compatibility: One physical phone verifies the hardware and OS combination you tested, not every device your users may own. Combine virtual configuration coverage with targeted physical-device checks.
- Identical debug and user experience: A debugger or development build can affect what you observe. Include release-relevant checks, and distinguish a debugging discrepancy from a user-facing release result.
