Emotional Deadlocks: When Two People Wait for Each Other to Change First

When one partner presses for change and the other withdraws, both can feel the other must move first. Understand the cycle, its limits, and a practical way to examine it.

When one person presses for change and the other pulls away, each may feel the other has to move first. That reciprocal pattern—often called demand/withdraw—can keep a conversation stuck: pressure may prompt more withdrawal, which can prompt more pressure. It is an interaction, not proof that one person is the problem, and the roles can switch depending on the issue.

What an emotional deadlock looks like

A deadlock often begins with a real concern: one person wants a decision, an explanation, or a change. They may raise the issue repeatedly, ask for an answer, or intensify their appeal. The other may go quiet, delay the conversation, leave the room, or try to end it. These are observable responses, not diagnoses.

Each person can experience their own behavior as a reaction to the other. The person pressing may feel that more urgency is needed because nothing is changing; the person withdrawing may feel that distance is needed because the conversation is too intense. When those responses reinforce each other, both can end up waiting for the other to change first.

Research describes this as a reciprocal interaction: in a study of 55 German couples, increases in one partner’s demanding tended to be associated with increases in the other partner’s withdrawing, with variation across couples and parts of a conversation (American Psychological Association, 2015). A 2021 replication and extension also examined the interaction alongside partners’ subjective emotional experiences (PubMed Central).

Why the roles can change

Demanding and withdrawing are not necessarily fixed personality types. The issue being discussed can affect who presses and who retreats. In a study of 31 couples, both husbands and wives were more likely to demand when discussing a change they wanted and more likely to withdraw when discussing a change their partner wanted (PubMed, 1990).

A study of 75 couples, including gay, lesbian, and straight couples, likewise found that the pattern shifted according to whose issue was under discussion (PubMed, 2009). This makes it more useful to ask what is happening around a particular issue than to label one person “the pursuer” and the other “the stonewall.”

Gender findings also depend on the sample and context. A 2024 study examined 63 cisgender, heterosexual couples and reported issue-specific findings involving gender and attachment; it should not be generalized to all couples or treated as a rule for a particular relationship (Wiley, first published July 24, 2024). In a home diary study of 116 U.S. couples, husband-demand/wife-withdraw and wife-demand/husband-withdraw patterns occurred at equal frequency (PubMed Central, 2009).

What studies say about conflict and distress

Across studies, demand/withdraw patterns have been associated with negative emotions and tactics, lower conflict resolution, and greater relationship distress. Those are associations, not proof that the pattern alone caused a couple’s difficulties or a forecast of what will happen in an individual relationship.

For example, the 116-couple home diary study found associations with negative emotions and tactics and lower conflict resolution after accounting for marital satisfaction. A separate study comparing severely distressed, moderately distressed, and nondistressed couples found more demand/withdraw during relationship-problem discussions associated with greater distress; the direction and strength of role differences varied with who initiated the topic, distress level, and marriage length (PubMed, 2007).

Resolution itself can be complicated. In the study of 75 couples, most conflicts did not result in resolution, and most resolutions did not involve agreed change. These sample findings do not predict the outcome of any one disagreement.

Prompta 600 Conversation Cards for Couples - Light, Medium, Deep Questions
  • Includes 600 questions! 2-6x the number of cards offered by other conversation card sets. The cards are small (2.5” x 1.75”) and double-sided with no branding, because all that matters is the questions printed on them and the experience you and your partner have using them.
  • These questions were carefully chosen from an exhaustive list of over 3,000 questions. Includes icebreakers, likes/dislikes, memories, fears, dreams, favorites, feedback, and dating questions. Many questions are unique and won’t be found in other couples cards. We did our best to eliminate questions that prompt similar answers so you avoid feeling as if the questions are repetitive.

Blue cards are deeper, and red cards are deeper still.
  • With the goal of fostering intimacy, these cards avoid potentially contentious subjects like exes, and focus instead on positive, healthy, and culturally-sensitive questions that encourage closeness and understanding.

A practical way to examine the cycle

Try looking at one recurring issue and describing the sequence rather than assigning blame. This reflection is a conversation starter, not a validated intervention, and it cannot establish what either person intends or feels.

  1. Choose one issue. Keep the focus narrow—for example, a recurring decision or an unfinished conversation.
  2. Name observable actions. Describe what each person does in plain terms: “I bring it up again,” or “I stop responding and leave the room.” Avoid turning actions into identities or motives.
  3. Ask what each person wants or is protecting. One person might be seeking a decision; the other might need time or a less intense conversation. Treat these as questions, not assumptions.
  4. Notice the sequence. Ask what tends to happen after one person presses or pulls away, and whether the roles differ on another issue.

Naming the cycle can shift the conversation from “Which of us is the problem?” to “What happens between us when this topic comes up?” That is an application of evidence that partners’ behaviors can be linked and roles can shift; it is not a guarantee of resolution.

When to consider outside support

If important issues repeatedly cannot be discussed without pressure and withdrawal taking over, a qualified couples therapist may help you examine the interaction. The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy offers clinician education on working with demand/withdraw patterns (AAMFT resource). That listing does not establish that one approach works for every couple or promise a particular outcome.
