Emily Pearson says an investigational medicine called bitopertin has made it easier for her to spend time outdoors despite erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a condition associated with painful reactions to light. Her account is encouraging, but it is one participant’s experience—not proof that bitopertin works for everyone or a cure. The FDA said on February 13, 2026, that it could not approve the drug application in its then-current form.
What Pearson says changed
Pearson told the report that sunlight had caused severe pain since childhood. She described the pain as “insufferable” and said exposure could feel like being in a hot oven, with pins-and-needles sensations. To manage exposure, she used protective clothing and avoided sunlight.
She entered a phase 2 trial and began taking bitopertin in July 2025. Later, she reported tolerating sunlight better and being able to spend more time outdoors. These are Pearson’s descriptions in a news interview, not an independently verified clinical outcome. They cannot establish how much benefit other participants experienced or predict an individual patient’s response.
What EPP and bitopertin have to do with sunlight
EPP is the condition identified in Pearson’s story. The report says it involves elevated protoporphyrin IX (PPIX), a substance that the trial’s investigators are studying in relation to the condition. Dr. Sioban Keel, a University of Washington porphyria expert involved in the trial, explained that bitopertin targets PPIX; that is the report’s account of the proposed mechanism, not evidence on its own that the medicine provides a particular clinical benefit.

Bitopertin, also identified as DISC-1459, is investigational. The AURORA phase 2 protocol, sponsored by Disc Medicine, lists PPIX concentration as its primary objective. Daily daylight tolerance, safety and tolerability are among its secondary objectives. The AURORA protocol therefore distinguishes a biomarker measure from patient-centered outcomes such as how well a participant tolerates daylight.
What the FDA decision means
In a complete response letter dated February 13, 2026, the FDA stated: “we cannot approve this application in its present form.” The letter discusses submitted Trials 201 and 202 and the proposed biomarker endpoint, and refers to DISC-1459-301 as a proposed confirmatory study. The FDA letter means the application was not approved in the form the agency reviewed; it does not establish whether a later application or regulatory decision followed.
That decision does not erase Pearson’s account, but it is an important distinction: one person’s reported improvement is not the same thing as evidence sufficient for FDA approval. The sources cited here do not establish a response rate, a general treatment effect, or the current status of the proposed confirmatory study.

Managing exposure is not the same as treating EPP
Pearson’s story describes protective clothing and avoiding exposure as part of her approach before the trial. UPF-rated clothing may provide a practical way to cover skin, but clothing is not a treatment for EPP and should not be taken to prevent every reaction. Anyone with EPP should follow individualized guidance from their care team about light exposure and symptom management.
