Ember announced Mug 3 on September 16, 2026, emphasizing three changes: temperature control on the mug, a new LED display, and top-rack dishwasher safety. The included sliding lid is intended to extend battery life. Ember’s launch announcement says, “For the first time, users can adjust their drinking temperature directly from the mug without opening the Ember app.”

Five presets without opening the app
A button on the mug cycles through five fixed settings: 125, 130, 135, 140, and 145°F. The default is 135°F, and an LED row indicates the selected setting and battery level. The presets are not customizable. For a temperature between the presets, use the Ember app, which supports more precise adjustment within its supported range.

Ember says Mug 3 works out of the box and that the button gives users temperature control. The current Ember app also supports the mug; app extras include precise temperature selection, custom LED color, battery details, and automatic firmware updates. You do not need the app to select one of the five on-mug temperatures.

The $20 difference buys four additional ounces of capacity. It does not, based on the published figures, buy longer battery life: Ember’s FAQ estimates a shorter runtime for the larger mug at the stated 135°F condition.

How long does the battery last?
Ember publishes two runtime claims in different contexts, and neither is an independent test. Its FAQ estimates about 90 minutes for the 10 oz mug and 80 minutes for the 14 oz mug on a full charge while maintaining 135°F. The current product page advertises over three hours with the included sliding lid and all-day use on the charging coaster.

Is Ember Mug 3 dishwasher safe?
Ember’s answer is yes, with restrictions: the mug is for the top rack only and a low-temperature cycle only. The sliding lid can also go on the top rack. The charging coaster is not dishwasher safe and must never be immersed in water. Let the mug dry completely before placing it on the charger.
Can Mug 3 use an older Ember charging coaster?
Ember’s FAQ says Mug 3 works with a Mug 2 coaster or a first-generation Ember coaster. That compatibility statement does not establish compatibility with third-party bases or other accessories.

What do the warranty and return terms cover?
Ember lists a one-year limited warranty for the mug and lifetime coverage for the charging coaster. The FAQ describes the mug warranty as covering defects in materials and workmanship; the product page describes it as covering manufacturing defects. The product page also lists returns of unused mugs within 30 days of delivery, subject to a $10 restocking fee. Review Ember’s current terms and exclusions for the applicable region before purchase.
Does Ember Mug 3 really leave a bitter taste?
The phrase “bitter taste” is not substantiated as a product defect by Ember’s FAQ, product page, or launch announcement. Those materials do not report that the mug changes a drink’s taste or identify a material or coating as a cause. Without direct testing or reliable evidence specific to the mug, it would be misleading to call bitterness a verified problem.

On the evidence available, Mug 3’s case rests on convenience: a physical temperature button, an at-a-glance LED, and app-based fine control when wanted. The case against it is the high listed price and runtime claims that vary by use and are not independently verified here. Whether those conveniences justify the cost depends on whether you will use the temperature control away from the coaster.
