Embedding React Native in a Flutter App as an Android AAR: What’s Actually Supported

Flutter’s AAR guide and React Native’s existing-app guide cover opposite framework-to-Android-host workflows. A React Native AAR inside Flutter is not documented as a first-party integration.

There is no first-party, documented workflow in the reviewed React Native and Flutter guides for packaging React Native as an Android Archive (AAR) and embedding it inside a Flutter app. The official guides describe two different integrations, both with an Android app as the host: Flutter modules can be packaged as AARs for an Android host, while React Native can be added to an existing Android app. Putting both runtimes in one product would therefore be a custom native Android integration, not the documented Flutter AAR route.

Flutter module → AAR → Android host is Flutter’s documented AAR direction. React Native screen/module → Android host is the direction covered by React Native’s existing-app guide. Neither diagram means React Native is an AAR hosted by Flutter.

What the official AAR and existing-app guides cover

The similar terminology can make the integration directions easy to confuse. An AAR is an Android library artifact; it does not, by itself, make one cross-platform framework a module hosted inside the other.

Workflow Host app What is packaged or integrated Build and runtime implications
Flutter module as AAR Existing native Android app A Flutter module is built into AAR artifacts and a local Maven repository for build variants. The host can consume the artifacts without the Flutter SDK installed. See Flutter’s Android project setup guide.
React Native in an existing app Existing native Android app React Native is integrated using its Gradle Plugin, React Android dependencies, and an Activity entry point. Development uses Metro; release builds package JavaScript in the APK or App Bundle. See React Native’s integration guide.
React Native packaged as an AAR inside Flutter Would require a Flutter app hosting React Native The reviewed official guides do not document this artifact direction or a turnkey workflow for it. Treat it as a custom Android integration requiring project-specific design and validation, not as a supported recipe in those guides.

How Flutter’s documented Android AAR route works

Flutter’s add-to-app documentation is about embedding a Flutter module in an existing Android host. It offers two integration approaches: include the module as a source Gradle subproject, or build generic AARs and consume them from a Maven repository.

Source Gradle subproject

This approach lets the Android host build the Flutter module as part of a one-step Gradle build. The trade-off is that the host build requires the Flutter SDK.

Generic AARs

The AAR approach builds artifacts for the module’s build variants and places them in a local Maven repository, which can then be distributed through local or remote repositories. Android host builders can consume the artifacts without installing the Flutter SDK. For Kotlin DSL hosts, Flutter’s guide uses variant-specific dependencies such as debugImplementation and releaseImplementation; configure profile as well if the host uses that build type. The exact setup belongs to the Flutter module-to-Android-host workflow, not a React Native-to-Flutter workflow.

For runtime startup and persistence, Flutter’s broader add-to-app documentation describes FlutterEngine APIs. Its Android add-to-app guidance supports AndroidX apps, but does not support packing multiple Flutter libraries into one app. It also warns that plugins can behave unexpectedly when they assume a Flutter Activity is always present. See Flutter’s add-to-app guide.

How React Native’s documented Android integration works

React Native’s existing-app guide targets a native Android host. In broad terms, the project arranges the Android and JavaScript dependencies, configures the React Native Gradle Plugin and React Android dependencies, and adds a ReactActivity entry point. JavaScript development is served by Metro. The React Native Gradle Plugin documentation says the plugin handles Android build configuration and JavaScript bundling.

Debug and release are different

In a release APK or App Bundle, the React Native build bundles JavaScript into the app. The documentation describes the plugin as taking care of bundling the JS code inside the APK/App Bundle. During development, Metro serves the JavaScript instead. If a project defines custom debuggable build variants, the Gradle Plugin must be told which variants are debuggable; those variants omit the packaged JavaScript bundle and need Metro.

These details matter if a team is contemplating a combined-runtime setup: a React Native screen does not become a self-contained Flutter AAR simply because the Android host can build an AAR. The RN Gradle configuration, JavaScript bundling, development server, and Android entry point remain part of the documented native-host integration.

What to verify before combining Flutter and React Native

The reviewed official documentation does not supply a direct recipe for a Flutter-owned app hosting React Native as an AAR. A combined design must be evaluated as a custom native Android integration against the actual versions and app architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Host ownership: Decide whether Flutter or native Android owns application startup, navigation, and the Android Activity or Fragment lifecycle. The official workflows both assume an Android host, so translating one into the other needs an explicit ownership design.
  • Runtime attachment: Specify how and where each runtime starts, how its view is attached and removed, and how it responds to lifecycle transitions. Do not assume an AAR resolves runtime startup or lifecycle coordination.
  • Build toolchain: Check the project’s React Native, Flutter, Gradle, Android Gradle Plugin, and Android versions together. Confirm which tooling must be present for each build and how dependencies and variants are resolved.
  • JavaScript delivery: Define how Metro is used for the relevant React Native debug variants and how JavaScript is bundled for release. Custom debuggable variants need explicit Gradle Plugin configuration.
  • Android compatibility: Flutter’s Android setup guide lists AOT architectures as x86_64, armeabi-v7a, and arm64-v8a, and recommends ABI filters where host architecture support differs. Verify the intended device ABIs and native dependencies across both runtimes. See Flutter’s Android setup guidance.
  • Plugins and native modules: Inspect whether Flutter plugins or React Native native modules assume a particular Activity, application context, or framework-owned lifecycle. Flutter explicitly cautions that some plugins may behave unexpectedly when no Flutter Activity is present.
  • AndroidX and packaging: Confirm AndroidX compatibility and resolve any overlapping native dependencies or packaging requirements in the actual host build. Flutter’s add-to-app Android support is for AndroidX apps.
  • Release validation: Test the actual release artifact, not just a debug launch: verify startup, navigation, lifecycle changes, JavaScript availability, native module/plugin behavior, and each supported ABI.

Which direction should you choose?

If the goal is to add Flutter features to a native Android app, follow Flutter’s module-to-host guide and select the source-subproject or AAR route based on whether host builders can use the Flutter SDK. If the goal is to add React Native features to a native Android app, follow React Native’s existing-app guide and configure its Gradle and Metro workflows. If the requirement is specifically to put React Native inside a Flutter-owned Android app, treat that as custom architecture work: the reviewed official pages establish neither React Native-as-AAR packaging nor a supported Flutter embedding procedure for it.
