Email validation does not always end in “valid” or “invalid.” A useful validator can return three outcomes: a positive result within the checks it performed, a negative result when it finds a blocking issue, or an unknown result when it cannot determine the address’s status. Unknown is not another word for invalid—and none of these labels guarantees that a future message will reach an inbox.
Why does email validation have three right answers, not two?
Because the evidence can be decisive in either direction—or inconclusive. A validator may find that an address passes the checks it can perform, detect a reason to reject it, or lack enough information to classify it confidently. Mailgun documents an “unknown” outcome for cases where recipient validity cannot be determined.

That third outcome matters: treating uncertainty as failure can reject an address that might work, while treating it as success can overstate what was checked. A sound result vocabulary preserves the distinction.
What does email validation actually check?
Syntax and format
A syntax check asks whether an address is formed acceptably, including whether it follows relevant standards and uses valid characters. Amazon SES documents syntax validation against RFC standards. But a string that passes a syntax check is not thereby proven to correspond to an existing mailbox or to accept mail. RFC 5321 distinguishes syntax checking from verifying an address: Amazon SES email validation; RFC 5321.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Address verification and deliverability signals
SMTP includes mechanisms for checking an address, but a protocol response must reflect what the server actually verified. RFC 5321 says a server must not return a successful VRFY response if it checked only syntax. It also recognizes that an address can appear valid yet not be reasonably verifiable in real time. As the standard puts it: “A server MUST NOT return a 250 code in response to a VRFY or EXPN command unless it has actually verified the address.” That is a requirement about SMTP verification, not a promise that a message will be delivered.
Services may expose multiple signals rather than one definitive verdict. Amazon SES describes validity, deliverability, and risk factors, alongside syntax validation. These signals describe the checks and assessment made by the service; they do not establish that a later email will arrive in the recipient’s inbox. See Amazon SES email validation.

What does an unknown email validation result mean?
It means the validator could not determine recipient validity from the checks available to it. Mailgun explicitly documents this category. It is neither confirmation that the mailbox works nor proof that it does not: Mailgun email validation.

Use the result as a signal to avoid making a definitive claim. If the address is important, consider a confirmation step—such as asking the person to verify it through a message—rather than automatically discarding it or labeling it valid. A confirmation attempt is a separate action; the validator’s unknown result remains inconclusive.

How should you read or choose a validation result?
Look at what the service reports, not just the label it assigns. The reviewed documentation supports comparing result vocabulary and exposed signals, but it does not establish a head-to-head accuracy ranking among providers.
| What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Outcome vocabulary | Check whether the service distinguishes unknown or indeterminate results from invalid ones. Mailgun documents unknown and undeliverable outcomes. |
| Signals exposed | See whether syntax is reported separately from deliverability or risk. Amazon SES describes syntax validation as well as validity, deliverability, and risk factors. |
| Verification limits | Protocol checks can be inconclusive; an apparently positive response is not a timeless guarantee. RFC 5321 distinguishes syntax-only checks from actual verification. |
| Integration and handling | Read the service documentation to understand its API and result definitions, then decide how your application will handle each outcome. The documentation cited here does not provide a basis for ranking providers by accuracy, bounce reduction, or coverage. |
Recipient validation is not sender authentication
Validating a recipient address and authenticating a sending domain answer different questions. Recipient validation concerns whether a particular address can be classified by the checks performed. SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are mechanisms for authenticating a sending domain, as described by NIST. They do not establish whether a particular recipient mailbox exists: NIST SP 800-177 Revision 1.
