Effective email marketing starts with permission, relevant messages, and sound sending practices—not with the size of your contact list or a “best” platform ranking. For a free starting point, MailerLite has documented limits of 250 active subscribers and 2,500 monthly emails; Brevo and Mailchimp are also worth evaluating, but the available plan details do not support a reliable five-tool ranking or a complete current comparison.
Build a permission-based list
Only add people who agreed to receive your marketing emails. An address you found, bought, or collected for a different purpose is not, by itself, permission to send marketing. Mailchimp and Brevo both recommend consent-based list building; Brevo also describes double opt-in as a way to reduce fake addresses, bots, and spam traps. These are provider recommendations, and legal requirements vary by jurisdiction. See Mailchimp’s compliance guidance and Brevo’s deliverability guidance.

If you send commercial email in the United States, consult the Federal Trade Commission’s CAN-SPAM compliance resource for the rules that apply. Do not assume U.S. requirements cover other countries, or that one provider’s guidance is legal advice for your situation.

Do not send every message to every contact by default. Group subscribers by meaningful differences—such as what they signed up for, their interests, or whether they have recently engaged—and make the content fit the group. This helps keep messages relevant rather than treating a large list as a single audience.
#1 Best Overall
Brevo advises focusing on recently engaged contacts and suggests separating people who have not engaged in the previous three to six months for a re-engagement flow. That time window is Brevo’s recommendation, not a universal cutoff. It also recommends a consistent frequency and gradually increasing volume after a sending pause. See Brevo’s deliverability guidance.
Set up a credible sending identity
Use a professional address on a domain you control, then configure the domain authentication your email platform and mailbox providers require. Brevo’s sender guidance covers DKIM and DMARC and summarizes requirements associated with Gmail, Yahoo, and Microsoft. Requirements depend on sender, message volume, and provider policy, so check the relevant mailbox-provider documentation before making DNS changes or treating a threshold as universal.
Brevo describes bulk senders as those sending more than 5,000 messages per day and discusses aligned sending domains in the relevant dedicated-IP case. Mailchimp says a published DMARC record is required for senders sending more than 5,000 emails to Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook addresses in 24 hours. These are provider summaries of requirements that can change; check Brevo’s sender requirements and Mailchimp’s best practices, then confirm the current rules with the mailbox providers.
Write, test, and make opting out straightforward
Send useful content that works on mobile and sounds like your brand. Before sending, test the message and its links. Mailchimp advises avoiding excessive capitals, exclamation points, and gimmicky wording; Brevo recommends a visible, working unsubscribe link in every marketing email. These practices improve the quality of the sending process, but they do not guarantee inbox placement. Sources: Mailchimp’s best practices and Brevo’s deliverability guidance.
Rank #3
Monitor delivery and engagement signals
Review open and click rates alongside hard and soft bounces, spam complaints, and unsubscribes. Use the pattern to find problems—for example, whether a particular segment is disengaging or a campaign is drawing complaints—rather than treating one metric as a complete verdict on a program.
Brevo says a hard-bounce rate above 2%, an unsubscribe rate above 1%, or a spam-complaint rate above 0.2% can lead to suspension of a Brevo account or campaign. Those are Brevo’s operational thresholds, reviewed in 2026, not universal industry benchmarks. Separately, Brevo’s summary of Gmail, Yahoo, and Microsoft sender requirements says to stay under a 0.3% spam-complaint rate. That mailbox-provider figure is not the same as Brevo’s account-suspension threshold. Check the applicable guidance at Brevo’s deliverability page and sender requirements page.
Rank #4
Compare free plans by the limits that affect your workflow
A free tier is useful only if its contact and sending caps, automation, forms, and other included features fit how you plan to work. The available first-party plan evidence supports the following comparison—not a verified ranking of five best tools. MailerLite’s plan details below reflect its June 16, 2026 update. Mailchimp’s pricing page is live and may change; its current free-plan allowance was not clear in the available page details.
Recommended Free Tools
| Platform | Free-plan details established | What to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| MailerLite | MailerLite’s June 16, 2026 update lists 250 active subscribers and 2,500 emails per month. It also lists up to three automations, three forms, one digital product, one landing page, and one website of up to five pages. | Confirm that the current plan and feature limits still suit your account. MailerLite says exceeding the contact or send limit pauses sending and some account functions until you upgrade or get below the limit. |
| Brevo | The available sources establish provider guidance on deliverability and sending requirements, but do not establish current free-plan contact, sending, automation, form, or landing-page limits. | Check the live plan for its contact and send caps, daily limit if any, automation and form availability, branding restrictions, reporting, and what happens when a limit is reached. |
| Mailchimp | The available pricing-page details do not clearly establish a complete current free-plan allowance or feature comparison. | Check the live pricing interface for the current send and contact limits, included features, and the point at which a paid plan is needed. |

Choose a tool based on your actual needs
- Estimate your audience and activity: Count active contacts and forecast how many messages you will send in a typical month. A subscriber cap and a monthly send cap constrain different things.
- List the features you will use: Check whether you need automations, signup forms, landing pages, reporting, integrations, or a small website. Verify each feature on the provider’s current free-plan page rather than assuming it is included.
- Look at the limit behavior: Find out whether the service pauses sending, restricts account functions, or requires an upgrade when you cross a cap.
- Recheck before committing: Free plans change. Review current pricing and feature terms before importing contacts or relying on a particular workflow.
MailerLite is the clearest documented fit here for a small operation that can stay within its stated free contact and monthly email caps and wants included forms, automations, a landing page, or a compact website. Brevo and Mailchimp may still fit, but compare their live free-plan terms directly; the available details do not establish enough to rank them against one another or name five verified best free services.
