They are not universal quality sliders, and the best setting depends on the voice, recording, model, and delivery you want.
What the three voice settings control

ElevenLabs’ API documents Stability as a 0–1 setting with a default of 0.5, and Similarity (the API parameter is similarity_boost) as a 0–1 setting with a default of 0.75. The product guide expresses the corresponding common starting values as roughly 50 and 75 on a 0–100-style scale. These are documented defaults and guidance, not guarantees of a particular result. Stability: consistency versus variation
Lower Stability tends to allow broader emotional range and more variation between generations. It can suit lively or dramatic delivery, but very low values may produce an overly random performance or unusually fast speech. Higher Stability tends to constrain variation, which can help a serious, consistent read; pushed too far, it can make a voice sound monotonous or emotionally limited. The source voice matters: the slider does not create the same expressive range in every voice.

Similarity: resemblance to the source voice
Similarity controls how closely the output follows the original voice. Turning it up is not automatically an improvement. If the recording used to create the voice contains background noise, artifacts, or other defects, a high setting can carry those into generated speech. A lower value may give the model more room to depart from those traits, but it also means less adherence to the source voice.

Style: amplify the source performance
Style attempts to emphasize the original speaker’s style; it is not a general-purpose emotion selector. ElevenLabs recommends starting at zero. Increasing it may use more computation and add latency, and the company cautions that it can make results less stable. Its troubleshooting guide notes that, for some voices, Style can contribute to inconsistent speed, mispronunciation, or extra sounds. If those problems appear, return Style to zero before changing other controls.
Starting values and a practical way to tune them
ElevenLabs’ Text to Speech guide says the common starting point is Stability around 50, Similarity around 75, and Style at 0, followed by minimal changes. Treat this as vendor guidance for supported workflows, not a tested preset or a promise that those values will suit every voice or model.

- Check the model first. Confirm which controls it supports; the available sliders differ by model.
- Set a baseline. Where the controls are available, begin around Stability 50, Similarity 75, and Style 0.
- Keep the comparison controlled. Use the same voice and text, change one setting at a time, and generate a few samples. This makes it easier to hear which change affected the delivery.
- Adjust for the result you want. If the read feels flat, try lowering Stability slightly. If it varies too much, raise Stability. If it drifts away from the source voice, consider raising Similarity; if source defects become noticeable, lower it. Leave Style at zero unless you specifically want more of the source performance’s style.
- Regenerate and judge the audio. A setting value does not guarantee a particular emotion or identical repeat output. Compare the results against your intended delivery rather than treating the numbers as a score.
In Studio, voice settings can apply across a project unless you enable an override for selected text. Check the setting’s scope before changing it, and regenerate affected audio if needed. The Studio overview also explains that generation is non-deterministic: the same slider values will not necessarily produce the same result every time.

Speaker Boost is separate from Similarity
Speaker Boost is a separate option that boosts similarity to the original speaker. It uses somewhat more computation and may increase latency; the Studio guide describes its differences as generally subtle. It is not the same control as the Similarity slider.

Speed changes pacing, not voice adherence
Speed is a separate control. The API documents 1.0 as its default; lower values slow speech and higher values speed it up. It does not replace Stability, Similarity, or Style, which govern different aspects of generation.

For v3, ElevenLabs characterizes Creative as more expressive but more prone to hallucinations, Natural as closest to the original recording, and Robust as highly stable but less responsive to directional prompts. These are named modes, not the same set of numeric sliders described above. Availability can change, so check the current Text to Speech guide and the controls shown for your selected model.
