If Elementor hangs on “Loading,” shows a gray canvas, or leaves the widget panel spinning forever, start with Safe Mode. Safe Mode removes activated plugins and the theme from the editor session, making it the quickest split test: a working editor points to a plugin or theme conflict; a failure that remains points toward server limits, URL settings, cache or script rewriting, security headers, or a blocked request. Work through the checks below in order, and make a complete backup before changing anything.

Identify which kind of failure you have
“Stuck loading” describes several different failures. The visible symptom helps choose the first branch, but the same site can have more than one cause after an update or hosting change.

Do not repeatedly reload a broken editor while making random changes. Record the exact page, browser, time, recent updates, and error text first; that context makes later log entries much easier to match.
1. Back up before troubleshooting
Create a complete backup of the database and files, including uploads and configuration, before disabling components or changing server settings. Elementor advises having a backup before contacting support. Store a copy outside the hosting account and confirm that it can be restored. If the site is business-critical, perform the tests on a staging copy when your host provides one.

- Note the current WordPress, Elementor, Elementor Pro, PHP, and active-theme versions.
- Export or record custom code snippets, performance settings, and CDN rules that you may temporarily change.
- Write down which users can reproduce the issue and whether it affects every page or only one template.
2. Update Elementor and verify version compatibility
Bring WordPress, the free Elementor plugin, Elementor Pro, and the active theme to versions that are intended to work together. Update from the normal WordPress updates screen, then check the Elementor and Pro version numbers in the Plugins list. A new version paired with an old companion version can produce an editor conflict; the free and Pro plugins should be kept on compatible releases rather than updated independently and left mismatched.
Use a controlled update order
- Confirm the backup and note the current versions.
- Update WordPress and the active theme if updates are available and supported by your host.
- Update Elementor and Elementor Pro so their release pairing is compatible.
- Clear any site, server, and CDN caches, then open a private browser window and test the editor.
- If the failure began immediately after one update, use the backup or the vendor’s documented rollback procedure on staging, and report the exact versions when requesting help.
Do not treat “everything is up to date” as proof that the versions are compatible. Check the release requirements and test the editor after each controlled change.

3. Run Safe Mode: the fastest conflict split test
Elementor describes Safe Mode as isolating third-party plugin and theme code to check for software conflicts. When it is enabled, the editor loads without activated plugins or themes. It changes the editing session, not the public site, so it is suitable for diagnosis.
Enable Safe Mode
- Open the page in Elementor and use the Safe Mode option shown in the loading or error screen. If the editor is reachable, use Elementor’s Safe Mode control in the WordPress admin.
- Reload the same page and wait for the canvas and widget panel.
- Test a second page or template to see whether the result is site-wide.
If the editor works in Safe Mode
A working Safe Mode session means the basic editor can load when activated plugins and the theme are removed. Elementor says that a fast Safe Mode load indicates either a plugin or the theme is causing the slowdown. Return to normal mode, switch temporarily to the Hello Elementor theme, and reactivate plugins one at a time. After each activation, open the same test page and allow the editor to finish loading. The component activated immediately before the failure returns is the primary suspect.
- Keep the suspected plugin disabled and confirm the editor works after a fresh login.
- Check that plugin’s support notes and settings for script optimization, editor integrations, or duplicate page-builder features.
- If no single plugin reproduces the fault, test combinations that load front-end JavaScript, security filters, custom fields, multilingual features, or analytics.
- Restore the original theme only after plugin testing; if the failure returns with the theme, its code or an integration is implicated.
If Safe Mode does not help
A failure that remains in Safe Mode makes an ordinary plugin conflict less likely. Continue with the requirements, URL, loader, cache, security-header, browser, and server checks below instead of repeatedly deactivating unrelated plugins.

4. Confirm the server and WordPress requirements
Elementor’s current requirements page lists the following baseline for Elementor and Elementor Pro (figures stated by Elementor in 2026):

The 256 MB value is a minimum, not a guarantee that a complex page will edit smoothly. Elementor recommends 512 MB and suggests 768 MB for best performance. A host can impose a lower PHP memory_limit even when a WordPress setting appears higher, so compare the values shown in Elementor’s system report with the host configuration.
Raise limits safely
If the report is below the published minimum, ask the host to raise the WordPress memory limit and PHP memory limit rather than pasting arbitrary code into production. Confirm the change in a new system report, clear caches, and test again. If the host cannot provide the required PHP version or memory, migration or a plan change may be necessary; do not hide the problem by repeatedly refreshing the editor.
5. Make WordPress and Site Address match exactly
Go to Settings > General and compare WordPress Address (URL) with Site Address (URL). They should use the same protocol (https:// or http://) and the same www form. For example, do not set one to an HTTPS www address and the other to an HTTP non-www address. Save only a deliberate, correct pair; an accidental change can make the whole site redirect or become inaccessible.
Check redirects and the editor frame
- Open the front end and the editor URL in a private window and watch for repeated redirects.
- Make sure the certificate covers the exact hostname and that a CDN or reverse proxy is not switching the protocol between requests.
- If the site was migrated, search the database and configuration for the old hostname only after taking a backup; use a migration tool that updates serialized data correctly.
Try Elementor’s alternate loader
In Elementor’s settings, enable Switch Editor Loader Method, save, and test the editor again. This alternate loader can work around a server or proxy response that prevents the default editor bootstrap from completing. Treat it as a diagnostic and compatibility setting: if it fixes the issue, keep the change documented and continue investigating the underlying response.

6. Remove cache and script rewriting while testing
Optimization systems can change the order, format, or timing of Elementor’s JavaScript. Purge page, object, server, browser, and CDN caches, then temporarily disable JavaScript minification, concatenation, defer, delay, “load on interaction,” and similar features. Test in a private window after each purge so an old script is not being reused.
Cloudflare Rocket Loader
Elementor specifically warns that Cloudflare Rocket Loader can break the editor by changing scripts to load asynchronously. If Rocket Loader is enabled, disable it temporarily or exclude the Elementor editor URLs according to Cloudflare’s current controls. Purge the Cloudflare cache and retest. Re-enable optimization one feature at a time only after the editor is stable.
Do not confuse a cache symptom with a fix
If clearing a cache makes the editor work once, leave the optimization setting disabled while you reproduce the test several times and in another browser. A cache purge can remove stale files without correcting the rule that generated them. Record the setting that caused the regression so it can be excluded or configured rather than blindly re-enabled.
7. Check browser evidence instead of guessing
Use the browser’s developer tools while the editor is stuck. In Chromium-based browsers, open the menu and choose More tools > Developer tools; Firefox uses Tools > Browser Tools > Web Developer Tools. The labels vary slightly by browser.

Reload with Developer Tools open and look for red errors. Record the full message, the script filename, and the first line of the stack trace. Commonly useful clues include JavaScript exceptions, blocked mixed content, failed REST requests, and Content Security Policy violations. A single harmless warning is not enough to identify the cause; correlate the error with the time the spinner stops.

Network panel
- Open Network, enable “Preserve log,” and reload the editor.
- Filter for
JS,Fetch/XHR, andDocrequests. - Look for requests with red status, long duration, or repeated redirects. Inspect the response body and the Headers tab.
- Note whether the failed request is served by the origin, a CDN, a security proxy, or a different hostname.
Export a network log only after removing passwords, cookies, authorization headers, and private content. A 404 points to a missing asset, a 403 to access control, a CORS error to a cross-origin policy, and a 5xx response to server or upstream failure; the exact response and URL are more useful than a screenshot of the spinner.

Elementor’s editor uses an iframe-like editing context. Elementor calls out X-Frame-Options and a Content Security Policy containing frame-ancestors 'none' as headers that can block it. Inspect the response headers in the Network panel and in the security or firewall product that sits in front of WordPress.
- Remove an unintended
X-Frame-Options: DENYor an overly restrictive policy from the editor response. - Adjust
frame-ancestorsto allow the legitimate site origin when your security policy requires framing control; do not remove CSP globally without understanding the exposure. - Check web-application-firewall rules for blocked editor, REST, AJAX, or heartbeat requests.
- After changing a header, purge proxy caches and verify the actual response headers again; editing a configuration file that is not used by the active proxy will have no effect.
Coordinate header changes with the host or security administrator. A policy that protects the public site can still be narrowed incorrectly and prevent administrators from editing.
9. Read server logs when the browser shows 500 or 520
A 500 response usually means the origin encountered a PHP or web-server error. A 520 commonly indicates that a proxy received an unexpected response from the origin. Neither code identifies the exact fault by itself.
Collect the right records
- Download Elementor > Editor > System Info and keep the complete report.
- Ask the host for PHP error logs, web-server logs, and, where applicable, PHP-FPM or proxy logs covering the exact minute of a failed editor request.
- Record the request URL, status code, response time, and whether the failure occurs only for administrators.
- Compare a successful front-end request with the failing editor request; differences in host, protocol, cookies, or headers often reveal the boundary that is failing.
Look for “Allowed memory size exhausted,” uncaught fatal errors, maximum execution time, upstream timeout, permission errors, and blocked security rules. Give the host the timestamp and request path instead of asking them to search an entire day’s log.
10. Recovery paths by diagnosis
Safe Mode fixes the editor
Keep the site in a known-good state, then identify the conflict with the one-at-a-time activation method. Replace, reconfigure, or update the offending component only after confirming the result on a backup or staging copy.
Safe Mode fails, but requirements are below minimum
Upgrade WordPress or PHP through the host, raise memory to a supported value, and retest. If the host cannot meet the requirement, move the site or reduce the page’s workload only as a temporary measure.
URLs, redirects, or headers are wrong
Correct the address pair, certificate, proxy mode, or framing policy; purge caches; then verify the final response in the Network panel. Avoid making several unrelated URL and security changes at once, because you will lose the ability to identify which change restored the editor.
Optimization causes the failure
Leave minification, defer, delay, or Rocket Loader disabled long enough to establish a stable baseline. Add exclusions for editor assets or URLs, enable one optimization feature, and test before enabling the next.
The logs show a fatal error or persistent 500/520
Stop changing front-end settings and escalate with the backup status, exact symptom, recent changes, Elementor and WordPress versions, System Info report, browser evidence, and the relevant host logs. Elementor support or the hosting provider can then reproduce the failure against a concrete request rather than a generic “loading forever” report.
Prevent the next loading failure
- Keep WordPress, Elementor, Elementor Pro, PHP, and the active theme within their supported versions.
- Maintain at least the published memory baseline and monitor the effective limit reported by the server.
- Test major updates on staging and keep a restorable backup.
- Document CDN, cache, firewall, CSP, and script-optimization rules that affect administrator URLs.
- When an editor problem appears, run the Safe Mode split test before disabling large groups of plugins.
- Save the System Info report and a clean browser Network log with sensitive headers removed when escalating.
When to contact support
Contact Elementor or your host after you have a backup and can provide the exact page, whether Safe Mode changed the symptom, versions, memory figures, URL pair, loader-method result, cache/CDN changes, browser Console and Network errors, and timestamped server logs. That evidence distinguishes a software conflict from a resource, proxy, or security failure and prevents support from asking you to repeat checks you have already completed.
