Element vs. Microsoft Teams: Security, Features, and Collaboration Compared

Element emphasizes configurable federation and encrypted messaging; Teams offers integrated workplace collaboration with layered encryption and selective E2EE. Compare the trade-offs before choosing.

Element is the better fit for organizations that need configurable federation, greater control over deployment, and end-to-end encrypted messaging. Microsoft Teams is geared toward integrated workplace collaboration, using encryption in transit and at rest with end-to-end encryption available selectively for eligible calls and meetings. The right choice depends on your external-collaboration model, compliance requirements, hosting preferences, and the meeting features you need.

How Element and Microsoft Teams approach collaboration

Element: configurable and interoperable collaboration

Element offers messaging, voice and video, Spaces, federation, and add-ons such as bridges, bots, and widgets. Its use of the Matrix open standard supports different federation models, from invite-only networks to broader communities. That flexibility can suit organizations that want to connect across deployments or shape their own collaboration environment. Element’s feature overview describes these capabilities.

Microsoft Teams: workplace collaboration within Microsoft’s managed environment

Teams spans chats, meetings, calls, files, identity, and compliance. Microsoft’s security guidance describes how encryption, identity controls, and policies apply across supported Teams workloads, but it is not a complete catalog of features or plan availability. Check current Microsoft documentation and your tenant configuration for the specific capabilities your organization needs.

What is encrypted in each platform?

Microsoft Teams: layered encryption with selective end-to-end encryption

Microsoft describes encryption in transit and at rest as the baseline for supported Teams workloads. End-to-end encryption (E2EE) can be enabled selectively for eligible calls and supported meetings; it is not a blanket setting that protects every Teams interaction. E2EE covers protected media, not chat messages or shared files. Microsoft also notes that protected calls and meetings lose some service-side processing and capabilities, including recording, transcription, and related Copilot features. Which clients and communication types are eligible depends on the supported configuration and tenant policy. Review Microsoft’s Teams encryption guidance before relying on E2EE for a particular workflow.

Element: encryption depends on room settings

Element presents E2EE as a default design feature, but that does not mean every room is always encrypted. Element Help clarifies that encryption applies only in rooms where it is enabled. Confirm the room settings that will be used for the conversations requiring E2EE. Element’s feature page describes its encryption approach, and its Help FAQs explain room encryption and key storage.

Element’s key storage is enabled by default, according to its Help page. It stores a copy of message keys on the account provider’s server and supports restoring chat history on new devices. This can make device changes easier, but administrators should understand how recovery and retention settings fit their security requirements.

How federation changes external collaboration

Element’s federation model lets an organization decide how open its network should be. Element describes three broad options, based on Matrix: closed federation, ecosystem federation, and open federation.

Microsoft Modern Webcam with Built-in Noise Cancelling Microphone, Integrated Privacy Shutter, Video with HDR, Auto-Focus, Light Correction, USB Connectivity, Certified for Teams/Zoom
  • Good stability/attachment to monitor, laptop, and desktop scenarios
  • Auto white balance and exposure compensation with HDR
  • Integrated privacy shutter with usage indicator light
  • Updatable firmware
  • Fixed focus to cover 0.4m to 1.5m
  • Closed federation: Keep collaboration internal or restrict it to invited participants.
  • Ecosystem federation: Connect selected organizations while they retain their own deployments.
  • Open federation: Allow broader participation across a wider community.

Federation is not automatically secure or suitable for every organization. The chosen model affects who can connect, while identity and access policies determine who is permitted into the network. Validate the invitation, identity, and access controls you plan to operate. Microsoft’s security guidance covers Teams identity and policy controls, but the sources cited here do not establish a like-for-like external-federation comparison.

Deployment, administration, and governance

Element describes both cloud and on-premises deployment, along with enterprise options such as single sign-on (SSO), retention, antivirus, and compliance-related controls. These are vendor-described capabilities; availability may depend on the offering and deployment. See Element’s enterprise collaboration overview.

Which platform should your organization choose?

Choose Element when control and federation are priorities

Element is a stronger candidate when your organization needs configurable federation, wants to consider cloud or on-premises deployment, or requires E2EE messaging in rooms configured for it. Plan for room-level encryption settings and key recovery, and determine which federation model matches your external-collaboration policy.

Choose Teams when managed workplace integration is the priority

Teams is a stronger candidate when your organization needs its workplace collaboration workload and can use Microsoft’s managed security and identity controls. If a workflow requires E2EE, verify that the call or meeting type, client, and tenant policy are eligible—and account for the service-side features that E2EE limits.

Element published a vendor-authored comparison on May 27, 2025 that argues Teams E2EE is limited. That is Element’s characterization, not independent testing; for Teams behavior, Microsoft’s own documentation is the more direct reference. The practical comparison is to check what is protected in the specific mode you will use: meeting media, chat, files, and recordings are not interchangeable security scopes. Element’s comparison and Microsoft’s guidance explain their respective positions.

No independent benchmark or verified comparative statistic establishes a universal winner. Base the decision on your organization’s tenant settings, compliance obligations, external access needs, and required meeting capabilities.
