Product configuration turns a customer’s choices into a valid, buildable product variant. For an electronics manufacturer, that means defining selectable options and compatibility rules, then ensuring the approved selection maps correctly to the components and production steps needed to make it.
What product configuration means for an electronics manufacturer
A configurable product is built from a defined set of attributes and permitted values. A customer or sales team selects among those choices; rules determine whether the combination is complete and valid. The resulting configuration can then be translated into an orderable variant and its manufacturing data.

Think of the product as a family built on a shared platform, with controlled differences between variants. For an electronics product, possible selectable attributes include power supply, communication module, I/O configuration, display, enclosure, connector, cable, firmware package, or accessory. These are illustrative options, not a universal checklist; the right choices depend on the product and how it is engineered and built. An electronics-specific article by MRPeasy in EE Times discusses examples of this kind.
How to define a product configuration model
Start with the stable product platform
Identify what is common across the family before modeling differences. Separate shared components and processes from the choices that genuinely change by order. This makes it easier to distinguish a selectable option from an engineering change that requires a new product definition.

Specify attributes and allowed values
For every customer-selectable attribute, record its allowed values and whether it is required. Define default behavior explicitly: a default can simplify selection, but it should not conceal an unmade decision when that choice affects safety, compatibility, cost, or production. In SAP CPQ, attributes can use different input forms, and a configuration remains incomplete until required attributes are selected; consult the SAP CPQ configuration guide and SAP CPQ product configurator documentation for the behavior documented for version 2606.
Encode dependencies and exclusions
Rules should express which options can coexist, which choices require another option, and which combinations are prohibited. For example, a communication module may require a particular connector or enclosure; a power option might exclude a component that cannot support its voltage range. Treat these as model rules to be verified against engineering requirements, not as assumptions derived from the software.

- BOJACK high quality Solderless Breadboard Assortment Kit
- Breadboard is a solderless device for temporary prototype with electronics and test circuit designs. Most electronic components in electronic circuits can be interconnected by inserting their leads or terminals into the holes and then making connections through wires where appropriate.
- The breadboard has strips of metal underneath the board and connect the holes on the top of the board. Note that the top and bottom rows of holes are connected horizontally and split in the middle while the remaining holes are connected vertically.
- The Breadboards Can be Spliced According to the Unit, the Structure is Clear in Color.
- Material: ABS Plastic Panel, Tin Plated Phosphor Bronze Contact Sheet.
SAP CPQ documents inclusion, exclusion, and bundling rules. Infor LN describes decision rules and constraints for checking whether a selected product can be built. The useful outcome is not merely a selection screen: it is a model that blocks incomplete or invalid combinations before an order is released.

A valid selection must connect to the manufacturing definition for that variant. Depending on the product and system design, this may include a distinct bill of materials (BOM), a route or routing, and other order or production data. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management documents distinct variants with unique BOMs and routes; its configuration models include components and model testing. See the Dynamics 365 product configuration models documentation and model-building and testing guidance. The latter page was last updated July 1, 2026.

- Save time with this handy box full of the most practical and common electronic components
- Easy to store: Each different component is packaged in a plastic bag, Resistors values are stamped with the according value
- Electronic components set include: diodes, resistors, transistors, LED diodes, electrolytic capacitors, ceramic capacitors
- Electronics component kit: This is a great assortment of components for electronic professionals or enthusiasts
Infor LN describes generating BOMs and routings from selected features and options. Oracle CPQ documentation describes mapping selections into BOM instances and distinguishes standard, model, and option-class structures. These are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that a particular deployment automatically integrates every system or data object. Confirm how the selected configuration maps to released engineering and manufacturing records in your own environment.
Validate the selection-to-production mapping
- Check that every permitted selection resolves to the intended components, quantities, and variant identity.
- Confirm that required manufacturing steps or routes are included for the selected features.
- Test representative valid combinations, plus combinations that should be rejected as incomplete or incompatible.
- Trace a configuration from the customer-facing selection through the order and into the production records used on the shop floor.
Keep configuration consistent across teams
Configuration is not only a sales or CPQ concern. Engineering defines product limits; sales and product teams present choices; operations and manufacturing depend on accurate build data; IT supports the systems and integrations connecting them. Siemens describes using a shared definition of product variability across planning, engineering, manufacturing, and service, with constraints reusable across software, electrical, and mechanical domains. See Teamcenter product configuration.

- Complete and practical package: The package contains more than 400 components, which can help you complete interesting and simple electrical experiments.
- Clear and sturdy packaging: Each component is classified and packaged and placed in a transparent box with clear labels on it, making it easy to find components.
- Humanized design: The package includes a power module and a USB data cable, and the components can be directly plugged into the breadboard, which is more convenient without soldering.
- The quality of components is reliable.
- Compatible with STM32,Raspberry Pi,Arduino and so on.
As an implementation practice, assign ownership for option definitions and rules, review them when components or processes change, and validate revisions before release. A rule that is accurate for one component revision or production process can become unsafe or unbuildable after a change. Make the release and version of the model visible to the functions that rely on it.

Choosing where configuration capabilities belong
Product configuration capabilities can appear in CPQ, ERP, and PLM contexts. They serve different points in the product and order lifecycle, and vendor documentation alone does not establish which platform is best for a particular manufacturer. Evaluate the actual model and data flows you need rather than choosing by product category or feature name.

Quick Recap
Implementation checks before release
- Define the family: document the shared platform and identify which differences are customer-selectable versus controlled engineering changes.
- Build the option model: list each attribute, its allowed values, required status, default behavior, dependencies, and exclusions.
- Connect selections to production: map valid configurations to the correct variant identity, BOM, and route or routing in the systems that own those records.
- Test boundaries: exercise incomplete selections, invalid combinations, and representative valid configurations, then inspect the resulting production data.
- Set governance: assign rule and data owners, define change review and release practices, and keep the relevant model version identifiable across functions.
