An electronic device uses electronic circuits—often with firmware or software—to process signals or information, control functions, sense conditions, communicate, store data, or produce an output. Smartphones and computers qualify, but so do digital thermometers, cameras, vehicle control units, routers, medical monitors, smart thermostats, industrial controllers, and appliances with electronic controls.
The term is an umbrella category rather than a single legal or retail classification. A refrigerator, for example, is an electrical appliance that may also contain electronic sensors, a controller, memory, and a display.
What is an electronic device?
Electronic devices manipulate electrical signals to represent, measure, store, transmit, or control information. They commonly contain semiconductors, integrated circuits, sensors, memory, a printed circuit board, a power supply or battery, and software or firmware. Not every device has every element: a simple radio may have no general-purpose operating system, while a passive RFID tag may have limited processing and no conventional battery.
A useful plain-English test is this: if a product uses electronic circuitry to interpret an input and make a decision, communicate, store information, or control an output, it is electronic. The input could be a button, microphone, camera, temperature sensor, keyboard, or radio signal. The output could be a screen, sound, light, vibration, motor movement, or network message.

Electronic devices versus electrical devices
| Category | Main role | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical device | Uses electricity mainly for power, heat, light, or motion | Electric heater, incandescent lamp, basic motor |
| Electronic device | Processes signals, information, or control instructions | Calculator, radio, smartphone, computer |
| Electromechanical device | Combines electrical power with mechanical operation | Washing machine, printer, hard-disk drive |
| Embedded electronic product | Electronic control built into a larger product | Car control unit, thermostat, microwave controller |
| IoT device | Uses networking plus sensing or actuation to interact with the physical world | Smart lock, connected camera, smart thermostat |
These categories overlap. A washing machine uses electricity for its motor and heater, while electronics and software select cycles, read sensors, manage timing, and drive the display. Complexity is not the dividing line: a high-voltage electrical system can be sophisticated, and a small electronic circuit can be simple.
Main types of electronic devices
Computers and tablets
Desktops, laptops, workstations, thin clients, 2-in-1 computers, tablets, e-readers, and single-board computers process data through general-purpose operating systems or dedicated software. ENERGY STAR’s computer category includes desktops, integrated desktops, notebooks, slate/tablets, portable all-in-one computers, thin clients, and workstations; its criteria address efficient operation and power management. See the ENERGY STAR computer category.
Phones and communication equipment
Smartphones, feature phones, cordless phones, mobile hotspots, satellite communicators, and two-way radios transmit voice or data. Smartphones generally run full operating systems and third-party applications; feature phones provide a narrower software and internet environment.
Audio and video
Televisions, monitors, projectors, soundbars, speakers, headphones, earbuds, voice recorders, streaming players, disc players, amplifiers, and receivers convert digital or analog signals into sound and images or capture them for processing.
Cameras and imaging
Digital cameras, action cameras, camcorders, webcams, document scanners, security cameras, and photo printers use sensors, lenses, processors, memory, and displays or network connections to capture and reproduce images.
Wearables
Smartwatches, fitness trackers, smart glasses, medical wearables, wireless earbuds, and augmented- or virtual-reality headsets combine small processors, sensors, radios, batteries, and displays or audio output. A wearable may also be a medical device, an IoT product, or a small computer, depending on its intended use.

Smart-home and IoT products
Smart speakers, lights, thermostats, locks, doorbells, security systems, plugs, connected appliances, environmental sensors, and robot vacuums add network communication to sensing or control. The Congressional Research Service describes IoT broadly as networks of objects with embedded components that connect to the internet, spanning appliances, vehicles, medical devices, fitness trackers, infrastructure, and industrial equipment.
Gaming and entertainment
Game consoles, handheld systems, gaming PCs, controllers, VR headsets, digital media players, and electronic toys combine processors, graphics, storage, displays, audio, and network functions.
Office and productivity equipment
Printers, multifunction copiers, fax machines, barcode scanners, point-of-sale terminals, projectors, document cameras, and electronic whiteboards capture, process, display, or reproduce information.
Health and medical electronics
Digital thermometers, blood-pressure monitors, pulse oximeters, glucose meters, hearing aids, patient monitors, medical imaging systems, and wearable health sensors use electronics to measure or assist care. A consumer health gadget is not automatically a regulated medical device; status depends on intended use, claims, design, and jurisdiction.
Automotive and transportation electronics
Infotainment systems, navigation units, driver-assistance sensors, tire-pressure monitors, electric-vehicle charging electronics, engine and transmission control units, dash cameras, and portable GPS devices are electronic systems embedded in vehicles or used alongside them.
Industrial, scientific, and infrastructure equipment
Programmable logic controllers, laboratory instruments, industrial sensors, network equipment, building-management systems, power monitors, robotics controllers, and communications infrastructure may never be sold as consumer gadgets but are electronic devices nonetheless.

How electronic devices work
- Input: A control, touchscreen, microphone, camera, keyboard, sensor, or radio receives a signal.
- Processing: A processor or dedicated circuit interprets that signal and applies instructions.
- Memory: Volatile memory holds working data; permanent storage or firmware holds files, settings, and instructions.
- Output: A display, speaker, light, vibration motor, mechanical actuator, or network connection produces a result.
- Power management: A battery, adapter, regulator, and charging circuit supply and control energy.
- Software control: Firmware or an operating system coordinates hardware behavior, updates, security, and user features.
Core components include transistors that control current, integrated circuits that combine many components on one chip, microcontrollers for dedicated control, microprocessors for general-purpose computing, sensors that convert physical conditions into electrical signals, actuators that turn commands into physical action, memory and storage, displays, and wireless modules for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular, NFC, satellite, or other links.
Connected devices and the IoT boundary
An electronic device may work offline, connect occasionally, or depend heavily on a vendor’s network. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s IoT framework describes an IoT device around internet connectivity, a network interface, and a sensor or actuator that interacts with the physical world (FCC order). Definitions vary, so not every internet-connected computer is treated as IoT in every framework.
- Offline: Core functions operate without a network.
- Network-capable: Connection adds features but is not required for everything.
- Cloud-dependent: Important functions rely on the vendor’s account or servers.
- IoT: Connectivity is combined with sensing, actuation, or interaction with the physical world.
Questions to ask before buying
- Is an account or subscription required?
- What data is collected, and is it stored locally or in the cloud?
- Are communications encrypted and is two-factor authentication available?
- Can default passwords be changed?
- How long are security updates promised?
- Does the product retain useful offline functions if the internet or vendor service fails?
- Can microphones, cameras, location, or health sensors be disabled?
The FTC’s connected-device guidance recommends addressing security throughout design and operation. NIST’s consumer-IoT baseline frames security as capabilities and outcomes for the product’s full life cycle.

How to choose an electronic device
Start with the task, not the product category or the biggest specification number.
- Define the use: Communication, school, work, gaming, photography, entertainment, health monitoring, automation, or specialist work.
- Match performance: Consider processor capability, memory, storage, graphics, camera performance, network speed, and multitasking. Translate each specification into the workload it must handle.
- Check compatibility: Confirm operating system, apps, file formats, wireless standards, carrier bands, regional restrictions, existing accessories, and smart-home ecosystem.
- Evaluate power: Compare expected runtime, charging speed, connector standard, charger inclusion, and whether the battery can be replaced.
- Assess durability: Check materials, drop protection, water and dust rating, port and hinge design, warranty exclusions, and repair cost.
- Verify software support: Look for a written security-update commitment, update history, app availability, and reset or recovery options.
- Investigate repairability: Ask whether parts and service manuals are available, storage or memory is upgradeable, components are paired in software, and a replacement battery is practical.
- Include accessibility: Check screen-reader support, magnification, captions, hearing-aid compatibility, voice control, one-handed operation, physical-button alternatives, text sizing, and contrast. Section 508 guidance treats accessibility as a combination of hardware, software, content, and support.
- Calculate total cost: Include subscriptions, cloud storage, cellular service, accessories, replacement batteries, repairs, energy, and likely resale or trade-in value.
Important design trade-offs
| Choice | Advantages | Costs or limitations |
|---|---|---|
| New | Latest hardware, battery, and likely full warranty | Higher price and greater first-owner manufacturing impact |
| Refurbished | Lower price and extended product life | Condition, battery health, parts provenance, grading, and warranty vary |
| Modular | Easier repairs and upgrades | May be thicker, heavier, or less sealed |
| Integrated | Often thinner, lighter, and more water-resistant | Repairs, upgrades, or battery replacement may be difficult |
| Local processing | Offline operation, responsiveness, and potentially better privacy | Requires adequate local hardware |
| Cloud processing | Powerful features on modest hardware | Needs connectivity and creates account, privacy, availability, or subscription dependence |
Buying within one ecosystem can simplify synchronization and support but may raise switching costs and accessory expense. More features can also mean more settings, data collection, vulnerabilities, repair complexity, and battery consumption.

Energy efficiency
Energy matters most for always-on equipment, high-power processors and displays, motors, heaters, frequently charged devices, and large deployments. Enable sleep and automatic display shutoff, avoid unnecessary operation, use correctly rated adapters, and compare lifetime energy use rather than purchase price alone.
ENERGY STAR computer criteria address efficient operation in off, sleep, and idle modes. U.S. federal buyers can consult the Department of Energy’s computer purchasing guidance; those procurement rules are not universal household requirements.

Ask whether the battery, screen, storage, memory, ports, and other common failure points can be replaced at a reasonable cost. Check parts availability, service documentation, standard fasteners, software restrictions, water-seal replacement, update duration, and warranty exclusions.
For products placed on the EU market from June 20, 2025, European smartphone and tablet rules provide consumer information on energy class, battery endurance, repeated free-fall reliability, charge-cycle endurance, repairability, and ingress protection. These requirements are geography-specific and are not general U.S. rules; see the European Commission requirements.
The environmental stakes are significant. The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre reports that electrical and electronic equipment placed on the EU market rose from 7.6 million tonnes in 2012 to 14.4 million tonnes in 2022, while about 4 million tonnes were recycled or prepared for reuse (JRC overview).

- Use compatible cables and chargers; protect ports, screens, and hinges from stress.
- Review app permissions and remove unused accounts and applications.
- Record serial numbers, purchase dates, warranty details, and service contacts.
- Clean only according to the manufacturer’s instructions; do not spray liquid directly onto a screen or use household solvents by default.
Common failure patterns
| Symptom | Possible causes |
|---|---|
| Rapid drain, heat, shutdowns, or failure to charge | Aged or damaged battery, heat exposure, cable, adapter, port, or charging circuit |
| Boot loop, freezing, or failed update | Corrupted storage, incompatible app, failed software update, or unsupported operating system |
| Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular failure | Signal, pairing, router, carrier, band, subscription, or cloud-service problem |
| Cracked display, liquid damage, broken hinge, or damaged port | Physical impact, moisture, dust ingress, wear, or overheating |
| Lost files or account access | No backup, failed storage, lost encryption key, account-recovery failure, or theft |
Back up data before troubleshooting, repair, factory reset, trade-in, or recycling. Swollen batteries, liquid damage, mains-voltage equipment, and safety-critical or medical devices may require professional service.
Repair, reuse, and recycling
- Continue using the device if it remains safe and useful.
- Repair it where the cost and risk are reasonable.
- Give or sell it for reuse, or choose a reputable refurbisher.
- Refurbish or remanufacture it when appropriate.
- Recycle it through an approved electronics or battery program.
- Use ordinary disposal only where local rules provide no better option.
“Used,” “refurbished,” “repaired,” “remanufactured,” “recycled,” and “for parts” describe different conditions; the U.S. International Trade Commission terminology illustrates these distinctions. Before resale or recycling, back up data, sign out, disable activation locks, remove SIM and memory cards, encrypt or securely erase storage, and reset the device. Remove a battery only if the product is designed for it, and follow local battery and e-waste rules because collection systems differ by country and state.
