For most streamers, a transparent PNG is the easiest balance of appearance, compatibility, and simplicity; use an OBS color source for a plain rectangle, a transparent WEBM for motion, or a mask when you want a circular or custom-shaped camera. A border frames the feed, but does not change its shape by itself.
What is a webcam border?
A webcam border—also called a webcam frame, facecam frame, or cam overlay—is a graphic layer around a live camera image. It separates the camera from gameplay or a desktop and can help a scene share a consistent visual style. A frame may also include decorative corners, a nameplate, or a logo; an overlay is a broader term for stream graphics such as borders, alerts, and labels. - Border or frame: The visible decoration around the camera.
- Overlay: A graphic layer or collection of stream elements; it may include a frame but is not limited to one.
- Mask: A filter that changes which parts of the camera image are visible, creating shapes such as circles or rounded rectangles.
- Background effect: Blur, chroma key, background removal, or a virtual background. These affect the area behind the subject, not the decorative border.
A standard rectangular border does not make a rectangular camera feed circular. A mask or other compositing method is needed for that.
Which type of webcam border should you use?

For a static transparent frame, the artwork sits over the camera and its open center lets the camera show through. A plain color-source border is built differently: a larger colored rectangle sits behind the smaller camera image. That source-order distinction is why “put the border above the webcam” is not correct for every construction.

How to add a static PNG border in OBS
- Open the scene that contains the camera, or create one.
- Choose Sources → + → Video Capture Device and add or select the webcam.
- Choose Sources → + → Image and select the transparent PNG frame.
- In the source list, place the image above the webcam. The camera should show through the transparent opening.
- Resize and position the frame so its opening lines up with the displayed camera image.
- Lock the two sources after checking their alignment. If you use the same treatment in several scenes, consider grouping the sources or placing them together in a reusable nested scene.
- Preview or record the scene at the stream’s intended output resolution and check the frame against both bright and dark content.
PNG is a file format, not a guarantee of transparency. Before importing, check that the asset has a transparent center rather than an opaque background; otherwise it can cover the camera completely. The asset must also match the camera’s displayed shape and size in the scene, not simply the webcam’s advertised resolution.
How to make a plain border with OBS sources

- Add the webcam as a Video Capture Device.
- Add a Color Source and choose the border color.
- Move the Color Source below the webcam in the source list.
- Make the color rectangle slightly larger than the camera, then resize or crop it so a narrow strip remains visible around the camera.
- Center the sources and group them so they stay aligned while editing.
This approach is lightweight and useful for a simple outline, but it does not provide decorative corners, logos, textures, or animation without additional artwork. It may also need adjustment if the camera is cropped or resized for another scene.
How to add an animated WEBM border
- Add the webcam as a Video Capture Device.
- Add the animated file as a Media Source.
- Enable looping if the animation is intended to repeat.
- Place the media source above the camera and align its transparent opening with the camera image.
- Preview the scene long enough to notice stuttering, looping problems, or a performance impact on your setup.
Use a file made for transparent overlays; a WEBM extension alone does not mean it has transparency. A vendor, for example, describes its static frames as PNG and animated versions as WEBM for media-source use on its Neon Webcams product page. If the file displays a solid background, check that you have the alpha-transparent version. Chroma keying can remove a single-color background, but may leave halos around hair and other fine edges; replacing the asset is usually cleaner.

How to make a circular or custom-shaped webcam
First change the camera’s visible shape with a mask; then place a matching border over it. In OBS, select the webcam source and open its filters, then add Image Mask/Blend and choose a mask image and mode. An OBS mask guide describes using this approach for circles, rounded corners, hexagons, and other shapes.
Mask behavior depends on the selected mode and the image’s black, white, transparent, and alpha areas. Do not assume a universal rule about which color stays visible: check the result in OBS, especially around moving hair, hands, and bright backgrounds. Position the decorative border over the masked camera only after the shape looks right.

When a browser-source border makes sense
A browser source can suit a responsive layout, interactive graphic, or overlay controlled through an external dashboard or app. One hosted-overlay workflow recommends matching the overlay aspect ratio and resolution to the streaming canvas, adding the provider’s output URL as a Browser Source, and setting its width and height to the canvas dimensions. Its webcam-border setup guide also describes using Transform → Edit Transform, a No bounds bounding box when precise positioning is needed, and pixel offsets for webcam placement.
Unlike a local PNG, a hosted border depends on the service and connection. A blank or missing frame can result from an unavailable URL or service, a login or control-app issue, or browser-source rendering trouble. Keep a local backup or a simpler fallback scene if the border is essential to a live production. Browser rendering can also add resource use, so check it on the computer and scene you actually stream with.

Choose a size and aspect ratio that fits the scene
There is no universal webcam-border size. Design or select the frame for the camera’s displayed dimensions and aspect ratio in the scene. Common shapes include 16:9, 4:3, and 1:1; portrait livestream layouts often use 9:16. A 16:9 stream canvas such as 1920×1080 can be a design reference, but it does not mean the camera window or border should be that size. Some overlay guidance distinguishes landscape and portrait variants; see Uno’s setup guide.
- Leave enough transparent space inside a PNG or WEBM frame for the camera image.
- Do not stretch a landscape frame into a square or portrait shape; use a matching version or redesign it.
- Use artwork at or above its intended display size. Enlarging a small file can soften edges, while shrinking very thin lines can make them uneven.
- Check the frame at the final output size. Thin, high-contrast lines may flicker or shimmer after encoding; scaling and compression can make the effect more noticeable. A transparent-PNG overlay guide discusses these scaling and output issues.
Troubleshoot common webcam-border problems
The frame covers the camera
- Confirm the PNG or WEBM has a transparent opening, not a solid background.
- For a transparent frame, put the frame above the webcam and align the camera inside its opening.
- Check whether the image was cropped accidentally or positioned over the wrong part of the scene.
The camera shows outside the frame, or the opening does not line up
- Check that the frame and camera use the same aspect ratio and displayed dimensions.
- Undo any non-proportional stretching and adjust the camera crop or use a frame designed for that shape.
- Align the pair again after changing scene resolution or camera size, then lock or group them.
The border looks blurry or flickers
- Use a larger source asset if the current one is being enlarged.
- Avoid extreme or non-proportional scaling.
- If thin lines shimmer in the stream, try a slightly thicker design and inspect an output recording rather than relying only on the editor preview.
The animation has a solid background or stutters
- Verify that the file is an alpha-transparent overlay, not a version with a baked-in background.
- If a single-color background must be keyed out, inspect edges for halos and replace the file if the result is poor.
- Check the scene’s rendering load and looping behavior; use a static PNG if motion is not worth the added complexity.
The camera and border move separately
Group the two sources or put them in a nested scene, then move and resize the group or scene rather than editing one source alone.
The browser source is blank or disappears
Check the URL, service availability, account or control-app state, and network connection. If those are all working, confirm that the browser source dimensions match the canvas and that it is visible in the scene.
Free or paid: how to choose an asset
A built-in color-source border costs nothing and can be enough for a plain rectangle. Free PNG libraries and browser tools can suit simple designs, but their quality, features, and terms vary. For example, Pixample’s border maker presents itself as a free, no-sign-up tool for generating transparent PNG borders; treat its feature and output claims as the tool provider’s statements.

Premade packs may save design time and offer coordinated themes, while a custom design gives more control over branding and exact dimensions. Neither a paid listing nor a free download establishes that an asset can be used commercially. Before using artwork on a monetized stream, check its individual terms for commercial use, attribution, redistribution, and any limits on characters, game art, team marks, or other third-party imagery.
