It is best known for integrated-circuit design, but also covers printed circuit boards, chip packaging, and broader electronic systems. EDA refers both to the tools and to the organized design flow that uses them—not to one program.
What electronic design automation covers
EDA helps engineers create and check electronic designs before they are physically manufactured. Its scope depends on the design target: a chip, a circuit board, a package, or a larger electronic system. The specific tools and workflow also vary with the type of circuit, including digital, analog, and mixed-signal designs.

- Integrated circuits (ICs): electronic circuits implemented on chips. EDA supports their design and the work of translating design descriptions into physical layouts for manufacture.
- Printed circuit boards (PCBs): boards that mechanically support components and electrically connect them. EDA can support their design as part of electronic-system development.
- Packaging and systems: EDA also applies to IC packaging and to design work involving broader electronic systems.
There is no single EDA workflow that fits every target. A digital IC flow, an analog or mixed-signal design, and a PCB project have different requirements.
How an EDA flow works for a digital chip
A typical digital IC flow moves from a description of intended behavior toward a physical design that can be manufactured. Tools perform different tasks along the way, and simulation and analysis may be used at multiple points to find problems and assess behavior.
- Describe the design: Engineers can use a hardware description language (HDL), such as Verilog or VHDL, to describe digital hardware. HDL means hardware description language.
- Synthesize the design: Synthesis transforms a higher-level hardware description into a lower-level implementation representation, such as a gate-level design.
- Verify and analyze: Verification checks whether the design behaves as intended. Simulation and analysis help examine its behavior and identify issues.
- Implement the physical design: Place-and-route tools determine where circuit elements go and how their connections are routed.
- Prepare for fabrication: Further checks help prepare the design for manufacture.
The exact sequence and division of work among tools can vary by design and engineering team. This digital flow is one example of EDA, not a definition of every EDA project.

Modern electronic designs must be developed and checked before physical manufacture. EDA provides tools and methods for representing a design, examining its behavior, verifying it, and moving it toward implementation. This is especially important for complex ICs, where design descriptions must ultimately become physical layouts suitable for manufacturing.
Thinking of EDA as a toolchain helps clarify its role: one tool or stage may describe the design, another may synthesize or verify it, and others may implement the physical layout or prepare it for fabrication. The flow is coordinated engineering work, not a single act of drawing a circuit.
