Electron is the more established fit for smaller payloads that benefit from a dedicated launch, while Neutron is designed for much heavier missions—but remains in development. Rocket Lab lists 300 kg to low Earth orbit (LEO) for Electron and a planned 13,000 kg to LEO for Neutron. Those figures are not a universal mission-fit test: payload dimensions, target orbit, deployment needs, schedule and tolerance for development risk matter too.
Electron vs. Neutron at a glance
| Decision point | Electron | Neutron |
|---|---|---|
| Published payload to LEO | 300 kg, according to Rocket Lab’s current product page. | 13,000 kg, according to Rocket Lab’s current product page; this is a planned capability for a vehicle still in development. |
| Intended role | Dedicated small-satellite launch. | Reusable medium-lift vehicle aimed at constellation, national-security and exploration missions. |
| Flight maturity | Operational launcher with substantial flight heritage. Rocket Lab’s live page displayed 97 launches and more than 268 satellites deployed on October 4, 2026. | Still in development in Rocket Lab’s Q2 2026 filing. |
| Architecture | Two stages plus a kick stage; LOX/kerosene propellant. | Reusable first stage; LOX/methane propellant; captive fairing. |
| Schedule evidence | Rocket Lab maintains a live launch manifest. | Rocket Lab’s Q2 2026 filing targeted pad delivery in Q4 2026, while noting the launch window was narrowing and timing depended on qualification and other critical tests. |
| Comparable public launch price | Not stated in the sources reviewed; request a mission-specific quote. | Not stated in the sources reviewed; request a mission-specific quote. |
The payload values are Rocket Lab’s published figures, not a like-for-like guarantee across every orbit or mission profile. Neutron’s figure describes a vehicle under development, not a demonstrated flight result. Rocket Lab Electron Rocket Lab Neutron

When Electron is the better fit
A smaller payload needs a dedicated deployment
Electron is designed for small satellites and dedicated access to space. If a spacecraft or deployment stack falls within the published 300 kg LEO capability, Electron may be worth evaluating when the mission calls for its own launch rather than sharing a larger rocket. Actual fit still depends on the payload’s mass, dimensions, orbit and integration requirements.
Orbit or timing needs shape the choice
Rocket Lab promotes Electron’s tailored-orbit and schedule-control features. Those are provider descriptions, not guarantees for a particular customer mission: confirm the achievable orbit, separation sequence, schedule and integration plan directly with Rocket Lab. Its launch manifest shows a range of customer and mission entries, but an active manifest does not by itself establish a date for a new booking. Rocket Lab launch manifest

Flight heritage matters
Electron is an operational launcher. Rocket Lab’s August 20, 2026 release identified that flight as Electron’s 93rd launch and its 14th launch of 2026; the company’s live Electron page later displayed 97 launches and more than 268 satellites deployed on October 4, 2026. The totals differ because they refer to different dates and source contexts. Rocket Lab updates
When Neutron may suit the mission
The payload or deployment plan needs more capacity
Rocket Lab publishes a design capacity of 13,000 kg to LEO for Neutron and positions the vehicle for constellation, national-security and exploration missions. That larger nominal capacity may make Neutron relevant for missions beyond Electron’s class, but it does not establish that a particular satellite stack fits the fairing, orbit, deployment sequence or integration constraints.

Understand the design—and what is not yet proven
Rocket Lab describes Neutron as a 43 m-tall, 7 m-diameter vehicle with a 5 m fairing diameter and 480,000 kg liftoff mass. It is designed to use LOX/methane and a reusable first stage, with a published 1,500 kg capability to Mars or Venus as well as the 13,000 kg LEO figure. These are manufacturer-published design specifications, not independent flight results. Rocket Lab Neutron specifications

The “Hungry Hippo” fairing is designed to stay attached to the first stage. It opens to let the second stage and payload proceed, then closes for the first stage’s return after a downrange sea landing. Rocket Lab says this avoids separate fairing recovery. Expected effects on turnaround, reliability and cost remain design claims until supported by operational evidence; reusability alone does not establish a lower mission price.

Neutron’s schedule is a development question
In its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Rocket Lab reported that Neutron qualification testing was ongoing. The filing described work on first-flight hardware integration and readiness, Archimedes engine testing, the second stage and reusable fairing. Stage 1 tank production was aligned with a target to deliver Neutron to the pad in Q4 2026, but Rocket Lab said the end-of-year launch window was narrowing. It said first-flight timing depended on Stage 1 qualification and other critical tests and warned that development risk could affect its estimate. A pad-delivery target is not a confirmed launch date or proof of service readiness. Rocket Lab Q2 2026 Form 10-Q
How to choose for your satellite mission
- Confirm total payload mass and envelope. Include spacecraft, dispensers and any other hardware in the launch stack. Check fairing dimensions and interface constraints, not just the rocket’s advertised mass capacity.
- Specify the destination and deployment. Document the required orbit, inclination, separation sequence and whether satellites must deploy together or in a particular arrangement. Ask the provider to confirm mission-specific feasibility.
- Decide whether the mission needs a dedicated launch. A single small satellite seeking an individual deployment and a large constellation deployment have different capacity and integration needs. Neutron’s constellation positioning is an intended use, not evidence that every constellation design will fit.
- Set a schedule-risk threshold. Electron has flight heritage and a live manifest. Neutron’s schedule depends on development and qualification milestones; make readiness assumptions and schedule contingencies explicit when comparing options.
- Request a mission-specific quotation. Ask each provider to state the assumed orbit, integration scope, schedule and deployment arrangement. The available sources do not establish comparable public launch prices, so neither nominal capacity nor reusability is enough to infer price or cost per kilogram.
What the payload numbers do—and do not—tell you
At face value, Rocket Lab’s published Neutron LEO payload figure is substantially larger than Electron’s. But an LEO capacity number does not answer whether your spacecraft fits the fairing, whether the rocket can deliver the required orbit and deployment sequence, or when a launch can be provided. Electron’s 300 kg and Neutron’s planned 13,000 kg figures should therefore start a mission discussion, not replace one.
