Start by completing the Cave of Knowledge, then activate every Site of Grace you pass, accept Melina’s accord to unlock leveling and Torrent, and spend your first hours exploring rather than trying to defeat every enemy. Elden Ring explains its systems gradually. You can leave a fight, return later with a stronger weapon or flask, and recover dropped runes once after death. Learning those principles matters more than copying a supposedly perfect build.
Your first 30 minutes: a safe route into the game
The opening area can feel hostile because Elden Ring gives you freedom before it gives you much explanation. Follow this sequence to learn the essential systems without wasting resources.

1. Enter the Cave of Knowledge
At the Stranded Graveyard, look for the hole near the ghostly character. Dropping into it leads to the Cave of Knowledge tutorial. Complete it even if you have played another FromSoftware game: it demonstrates guarding, dodging, stance breaking and guard counters, as well as the basic movement and attack controls.

2. Activate nearby Sites of Grace
Sites of Grace are your checkpoints, planning stations and fast-travel anchors. Interact with each one you discover, even if you do not intend to rest immediately. Resting restores HP, FP, status ailments and flask uses, and later unlocks additional menu options such as leveling, flask improvements and spell memorization.
Grace trails can point toward a broad direction, but they are suggestions rather than a mandatory route. Open the map whenever you are safe. Discovered graces are recorded there, and you can fast-travel to them except in situations such as being inside a dungeon or currently in battle. The map cannot be opened during combat, so orient yourself before pulling a group of enemies.
3. Explore until Melina offers an accord
After you have found several Sites of Grace through normal early exploration, Melina can appear when you rest. Accepting her accord grants the ability to spend runes on character levels and gives you the Spectral Steed Whistle. The official early guidance does not define one universal number of graces that triggers this meeting, so do not treat a specific count as a rule.

How Sites of Grace, maps and markers work
Resting is a reset with a cost
Resting refills your healing and focus resources, but it also refreshes most ordinary enemies in the area. Use a grace before a difficult route, after collecting a large number of runes, or when you need to change equipment and spells. Do not assume that every enemy you defeated will remain gone after you rest.
Read the map before riding away
Map fragments add terrain and location detail; they are commonly found along roads near tall stone monuments. A blank region is not a sign that there is nothing there. As you explore, the map reveals roads, elevation clues and points of interest that help you plan a route instead of wandering until your flasks are empty.
Use markers as an external memory
Markers let you record information the game does not want you to memorize. Mark a dangerous enemy you intend to revisit, an unexplored cave, a merchant, a locked route or treasure that is currently out of reach. A marker turns an apparent dead end into a future objective and prevents repeated searches across the same terrain.

Combat fundamentals that prevent early deaths
Manage stamina, not just health
Attacks, blocks, dodges and several other actions consume stamina. When the bar reaches zero, actions that require stamina cannot be performed until it recovers. Avoid attacking continuously just because an enemy is close. Leave enough stamina for a defensive roll or a guard when the opponent’s turn begins.
Learn the defensive options
- Dodge roll: Use timing and positioning to avoid a hit rather than rolling repeatedly without a plan.
- Guard: A shield can absorb attacks, but blocking still interacts with stamina and does not make every strike safe.
- Jump: Jumping can evade or challenge certain attacks and gives you another way to approach an enemy.
- Crouch and stealth: Crouching in grass is more effective, and an unaware enemy takes extra damage from your first attack.
- Lock-on: Lock-on helps with tracking a single target, while unlocking can make it easier to manage a large enemy or control your camera during mounted movement.
Look for critical-hit opportunities
Attacks from behind, successful parries and strikes against a fallen enemy can create a critical-hit opportunity, although some enemies have exceptions. Guard counters and attacks that damage an enemy’s stance can make a knockdown possible. The tutorial is the safest place to practice the timing; a real enemy is a poor place to learn a control you have never tried.
Observe before committing
Watch an enemy’s reach, delay and recovery animation for a few seconds. Many attacks are designed to punish an early dodge or a greedy second swing. In open areas, you can crouch past a patrol, separate one enemy from a group, or lure opponents into fighting one another. A route that avoids a battle is often the intended solution, not a shortcut for players who are under-leveled.
What to upgrade first
Elden Ring does not have one universally correct stat order. Your priorities depend on the weapon, spells and support options you want to use. Think in terms of several independent progression tracks.
Character attributes

Spend levels to meet the requirements and improve the play style you actually use. A rigid level target copied from another player may leave you with an attribute spread that does not help your weapon or spells.
Weapon upgrades
More character levels do not solve every difficulty spike. Improving your chosen weapon can increase damage more directly than adding another level to an unrelated attribute. If a weapon feels weak despite meeting its requirements, look for the materials and equipment menu options needed to strengthen it before abandoning the weapon.
Flask improvements
Flask upgrades increase the value of each rest and can determine whether you have enough healing or FP recovery to finish an area. Use the flask menu at a Site of Grace whenever you obtain an item that improves its uses or potency. The exact menu options available expand as you progress.

Ashes of War and craftable buffs
Ashes of War can change how a weapon attacks or supports your build. Craftable buffs provide another way to prepare for an encounter. Neither system requires you to follow a prescribed build; experiment when a weapon’s moveset or an effect addresses the problem you are facing.
Spirit summons: optional support, not a substitute for learning
Spirit ashes can absorb pressure, distract an enemy or complement your build. You need spirit ashes and a Spirit Calling Bell, and only one spirit type can be summoned at a time. Spirits cannot be summoned during multiplayer.
How to obtain the bell
After obtaining the Spectral Steed Whistle, visit the Church of Elleh at the appropriate time and speak with Renna to receive the Spirit Calling Bell and an early set of spirit ashes. If that meeting is missed under the circumstances described by the official early guidance, a later purchase route is available at Roundtable Hold.
When and how to summon
A spirit-summon icon appears in areas where spirits are permitted. Summoning consumes FP or another listed resource depending on the spirit, and the same spirit cannot be called repeatedly during one encounter. Treat a summon as a tactical option for a boss, ambush or crowded room rather than as an obligation to use one every time.
Strengthening spirits
Spirit upgrades require runes and glovewort. Strengthening them can raise their health, damage and defense, making an existing summon more dependable. If a summon dies instantly, upgrading it or choosing a different spirit may be more effective than spending several more character levels.
Should you fight the Tree Sentinel?
No. The Tree Sentinel is deliberately tough for a beginning player. You can ride or walk past it, explore elsewhere, collect upgrades and return when the encounter is more manageable. Fight order is your choice, and leaving a dangerous field enemy does not forfeit progress.
This principle applies beyond the opening area. If an enemy kills you before you can identify its attacks, mark its location, leave, and return after improving a weapon, flask, summon or relevant attribute. The open world is designed to let you change the problem rather than repeat the same losing attempt.

Using Torrent safely
Torrent is both transportation and a distinct combat option. Mounted attacks depend on which side of the mount is positioned toward the target. Charged attacks can hit multiple enemies, and mounted combat can be useful against large field enemies with enough room to maneuver.
Practice on isolated targets instead of learning beside a group. Keep in mind that reviving Torrent after its health is depleted consumes a Crimson Flask. Dismount when a narrow interior, ledge or dense group makes the mount harder to control; mounted combat is never required simply because it is available.
Runes, death and checkpoints
What happens when you die
Your carried runes drop at the location of death. Return to that location and interact with the dropped pile to retrieve them. If you die again before recovering them, the dropped runes are lost. This is the complete risk: death itself does not permanently remove every rune you own, but a second death before recovery removes that particular pile.
How to protect a large balance
- Spend runes at a Site of Grace when you have enough for a level, weapon improvement or another useful purchase.
- Before entering an unfamiliar cave or boss arena, avoid carrying more than you are prepared to risk.
- If you die, plan a recovery route instead of fighting every enemy between the grace and the drop.
- Do not attempt a difficult shortcut while carrying a large pile unless the time saved is worth the risk.
Where you revive
Revival normally returns you to the last Site of Grace where you rested. A nearby Stake of Marika can provide an alternative when the game offers it. Check the available revival choice rather than assuming that every death sends you to the same checkpoint.
Optional help from other players
Spirit summons are the simplest documented support for a first playthrough, but co-op is another option. Multiplayer signs let you request assistance, and the Furlcalling Finger Remedy is used to reveal relevant signs. Kalé sells a Crafting Kit that enables you to craft the remedy.
Co-op players need to be in approximately the same area. Exact multiplayer restrictions and matchmaking details can vary by the situation, so read the item descriptions and the multiplayer menu rather than relying on a universal host-level rule. If you want to learn an encounter alone, disable the summon sign and use spirits only where permitted.

A practical decision framework when you are stuck
- Identify the failure: Are you dying in one hit, running out of healing, dealing too little damage, or losing control of the crowd?
- Choose the matching upgrade: Consider Vigor for HP, a weapon upgrade for damage, flask improvements for more recovery, or a spirit upgrade for additional pressure and distraction.
- Change the approach: Try a shield, guard counter, stealth opening, mounted positioning, a different weapon skill or a summon.
- Leave if the environment is wrong: Mark the location and explore another road, cave or grace.
- Return with a clear objective: Re-enter when you know what you are testing and how you will recover your runes if it goes badly.
First-session checklist
- Complete the Cave of Knowledge and reread any missed tutorials.
- Activate and rest at Sites of Grace as you discover them.
- Open the map, locate map fragments and place markers for future visits.
- Accept Melina’s accord when it becomes available to unlock leveling and Torrent.
- Spend a large rune balance before taking an unnecessary risk.
- Test guarding, dodging, jumping, crouching, lock-on and a weapon skill against a manageable enemy.
- Improve a weapon or flask before assuming that more character levels are the only answer.
- Decide whether spirit ashes, crafting or co-op fits the encounter and your preferred style.
- Leave the Tree Sentinel and other overwhelming enemies until exploration has made the fight reasonable.
About the guidance and game versions
The foundational beginner material from Bandai Namco was published in 2021 and 2022. It accurately describes the core systems above, but it is not a promise about balance, enemy damage or control details on every later patch and platform. Use the current in-game descriptions and Controller Settings when they differ from an older explanation. The principles of exploring, spending runes carefully, upgrading multiple progression tracks and choosing when not to fight remain useful regardless of balance changes.
