Elden Ring Beginner Build Guide: Choose a Class, Stats, and Weapon

A practical first-playthrough guide to Elden Ring classes, Vigor and other stats, weapon scaling, and choosing a build that fits how you want to fight.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a forgiving first melee character in Elden Ring, start as a Vagabond, raise Vigor early, and build around one weapon you enjoy using. That is a practical default—not a rule or a universally best build. Choose Warrior if you want a more aggressive dual-wielding start, Astrologer for an Intelligence-oriented sorcery start, or Prophet for Faith-oriented incantations. Your starting class shapes your opening equipment and stats, but it does not lock your character into one playstyle.

This guide focuses on first-playthrough decisions: how to choose an opening class, which attributes to prioritize, and how to select and support a weapon without spreading your levels too thin. The recommendations apply to the base game’s familiar starting options; check your edition and platform before assuming every edition offers the same class roster.

Choose a starting class for its opening advantages, not as a permanent build

A starting class gives you an initial set of attributes and equipment. It affects how the opening hours feel, but it is not a permanent character lock. Bandai Namco describes class as “a starting point,” noting that a character can begin as an Astrologer, Samurai, or Prophet without being limited to that origin later. Bandai Namco’s class overview explains that each origin begins with equipment and stats suited to a particular direction.

For beginners, the most useful question is not “Which class is strongest?” but “Which opening setup gives me the kind of play I want while I learn?” The suggestions below are starting points, not promises that one origin will outperform the others throughout the game.

ELDEN RING: Tarnished Edition - Nintendo Switch 2
  • ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition contains the Elden Ring Base Game + Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion + Additional Content (including Torrent Skins, New Armors, and More...)
  • MASSIVE OPEN WORLD
  • DEEP, CUSTOMIZABLE COMBAT
  • NEW STARTING CLASSES
  • NEW PLAYER-FRIENDLY ENHANCEMENTS
Starting class Good fit if you want… What to keep in mind
Vagabond A forgiving melee opening with room to learn enemy timing. Mobalytics’ beginner guide recommends it for beginners and points to its larger health pool, shield, armor, two weapons, and flexible stats. That is a guide publisher’s recommendation, not a game rule. Mobalytics’ beginner guide was updated August 26, 2026.
Warrior A more aggressive, dual-wielding style. Choose it because that pace appeals to you; an aggressive opening does not remove the need to manage health and stamina.
Astrologer An Intelligence-oriented beginning with ranged sorcery as a central option. Spell use draws on FP, so consider how often you want to cast as well as how much you want to fight at close range.
Prophet A Faith-oriented beginning built around incantations. Faith supports incantations, which can include healing and buffs as well as offensive options.

These options match the playstyles described in Bandai Namco’s class material. If you are uncertain, choose by preferred combat rhythm: a shield-supported melee start, fast dual-wielding, ranged sorcery, or Faith-based incantations. You can change the direction of your character as you find weapons, spells, and skills that suit you.

Think of class choice as a comparison of opening trade-offs, rather than a test with one correct answer. Vagabond’s shield and armor make the melee opening feel more forgiving according to Mobalytics, while Warrior is the more aggressive dual-wielding option. Astrologer puts sorcery and ranged attacks closer to the center of the plan, but frequent casting means FP matters. Prophet points toward incantations, which can offer healing and buffs as well as attacks. If you cannot decide, ask which opening tools you are most likely to use; the class label itself does not decide your later build.

Edition and class-roster caveat

Do not assume every edition and platform presents exactly the same starting-class list. Bandai Namco’s class page describes ten starting classes, while its current Elden Ring overview says Tarnished Edition includes two new starting classes. The available official descriptions do not settle which editions and platforms expose every added class. The overview describes Tarnished Edition as including the base game, Shadow of the Erdtree, two new starting classes, four exclusive armor sets, new weapons and combat techniques, and Torrent customization options; it also describes the additional content as a digital purchase on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Confirm the product and platform listing you own or plan to buy rather than assuming this bundle is required for the advice here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters if you are looking at a class guide, product listing, or character-creation screen from a different edition. The advice to prioritize survivability, match attributes to equipment, and maintain a manageable equipment load still applies as a decision process; do not assume that a particular roster or bundle is included with every base-game listing. Tarnished Edition is not necessary simply to follow this build advice.

Prioritize Vigor before chasing damage

Vigor increases HP, giving you more room to survive mistakes while learning enemy attacks. Bandai Namco’s official stats guide puts it plainly: “Vigor (VGR) is our health (HP) which determines how many hits you can take before dying.” The publisher calls Vigor one of the most important early stats. Read Bandai Namco’s stats explanation.

A useful long-term milestone is 40 Vigor, not a requirement to meet in your first hours. Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s advanced-stat guide, published July 19, 2023, gives these illustrative points:

Vigor Health stated by Bandai Namco How to read the figure
40 1,450 HP A broad progression milestone; it is not an instruction to ignore your weapon or other needs until you reach it.
60 1,900 HP More health is available, but the gain per additional point has diminished compared with earlier investment.
99 2,100 HP The comparatively small increase beyond 60 illustrates diminishing returns.

These figures are the values in the official guide, not a promise that every player needs the same target. Bandai Namco notes that 60 Vigor can be worthwhile after the other needs of a build are covered. Use the milestones to understand the trade-off: extra health can help, but continually pushing Vigor upward gives diminishing returns, so balance it with the equipment and combat style you actually use. Bandai Namco’s advanced-stat guide covers these returns.

In practice, use Vigor as the first place to look when ordinary mistakes are ending attempts quickly. The 40-point figure is a progression marker, not a demand to pause every other improvement until you reach it. You may still need the attributes to meet your weapon’s requirements, and a caster may need Mind for FP; the useful question is whether the next level addresses the problem you are actually having. The jump from 60 to 99 adds only 200 HP in the official guide’s figures, so maxing Vigor is not automatically a better use of every later level than supporting your weapon or other core needs.

Spend damage stats to support a weapon, not all at once

Once you have a weapon you like, check its attribute requirements and scaling before investing heavily in damage attributes. Requirements tell you what you need to wield it effectively; scaling indicates which attributes contribute to its bonus damage. The weapon’s upgrade level also affects scaling bonuses, and Ashes of War can modify scaling grades. This makes the weapon in your hands—not a generic “best stat” list—the useful reference for where to put damage levels.

  • Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
  • Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.
  • Strength: Commonly supports heavier, slower weapons and stance damage. Two-handing a weapon grants a Strength bonus for scaling and can make it easier to break an opponent’s guard.
  • Dexterity: Commonly supports faster or ranged weapons. Faster attacks may also suit a status-effect approach.
  • Intelligence: Supports sorceries. Consider it when spells are a meaningful part of your plan.
  • Faith: Supports incantations, including healing and buffs as well as other spell uses.
  • Arcane: Matters for certain attribute requirements, item discovery, and status buildup. Invest when the weapon, spell, or status strategy you have chosen calls for it.

These are broad directions, not exclusive categories: look at the attributes and scaling displayed for your particular weapon. Avoid raising every damage stat “just in case.” A weapon that does not benefit much from a stat will not reward that investment as well as one whose requirements and scaling match it. Bandai Namco’s advanced stats guide explains scaling, upgrade effects, and two-handing.

Separate the minimum requirement from your longer-term damage plan. First check that the weapon’s listed requirements are covered; then, as you gain levels, favor attributes that its displayed scaling actually rewards. If you later switch to a weapon with different requirements or scaling, reassess rather than continuing to invest automatically in the old weapon’s favored stat. Scaling grades can change with upgrades and Ashes of War, so a weapon’s damage bonus is not a fixed reflection of your starting class alone.

Use Mind and Endurance to solve specific constraints

Mind: invest according to how often you spend FP

Mind governs FP, the resource used for spells, weapon skills, and spirit summons. A spell-focused character that casts often has a clearer reason to invest in Mind than a melee character who rarely uses skills. If you find yourself unable to use a spell or skill when you need it, or want to rely on those tools more often, Mind is the attribute to consider. It is a supporting stat, not a reason to divert levels from the core needs of a build automatically.

Think beyond a simple “caster versus melee” split: a character who mainly fights up close may still use weapon skills or spirit summons, which also spend FP. Conversely, choosing Astrologer does not mean every level must go to Mind. The practical test is how much you rely on FP-powered tools and whether your current supply lets you use them when you want. If not, Mind is a relevant option; if you rarely spend FP, other needs may be more pressing.

Endurance: add it when stamina or equipment load is limiting you

Endurance governs stamina and equipment load. Stamina affects how much you can do before needing to recover; equipment load determines how heavily your equipped gear weighs against your capacity. If your preferred armor and weapon combination pushes you into a heavy roll, additional Endurance may help you carry it while keeping a more mobile roll.

Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s advanced-stat guide, published July 19, 2023, defines a normal or medium roll at 30–69.9% equipment weight and a heavy roll at 70–99.9%. Keep equipped weight at 69.9% or below to stay in the medium range or lighter. The exact weight and capacity are shown in the game’s equipment information; use the percentage to check the result of changing weapons or armor rather than judging by appearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a loadout is over the medium-roll threshold, you have two practical levers: equip lighter gear or invest in Endurance to raise capacity. You do not have to solve the problem with levels if a different equipment combination suits you. Conversely, if you are comfortable with your gear but frequently constrained by stamina, Endurance may address that separate problem too. The point is to check the displayed equipment-weight percentage and your stamina needs instead of assuming that heavier armor is always worth a slower roll.

Choose a weapon by its moveset, then support it consistently

There is no universally strongest beginner weapon established by the sources here. A good first weapon is one whose attacks you can land reliably and whose requirements you can meet without derailing your attribute plan. Try its moveset, pay attention to how quickly it attacks and how much recovery it leaves, and compare its requirements and scaling in the equipment menu.

  1. Try the weapon’s attacks in a low-risk situation. Notice whether its speed, reach, and recovery suit the way you respond to enemies. A move that feels comfortable and repeatable is more useful to a new player than a weapon chosen only for a reputation.
  2. Check attribute requirements. Confirm that your character meets the weapon’s listed requirements before committing levels to it.
  3. Read its scaling. Pick a main damage direction that fits the weapon’s scaling, then invest there rather than dividing damage points among unrelated attributes.
  4. Upgrade the weapon you are actually using. Weapon level improves scaling bonuses. As a practical first-playthrough approach, consistently supporting one main weapon is easier to manage than spreading upgrade materials and stat investment across many unrelated choices.
  5. Test two-handing and weapon skills. Two-handing increases weapon power, grants a Strength bonus for scaling, and can make it easier to break an opponent’s guard. Weapon skills consume FP, so account for that cost if you plan to use them often.

That process does not mean you must keep the first weapon you find. It gives you a way to judge alternatives: if a new weapon feels better, check its requirements and scaling, then decide whether the change fits your existing attributes and upgrade resources.

There are two useful checks when comparing weapons. First, consider the experience of using them: can you land their attacks reliably, and does their pace feel comfortable? Second, consider the support they ask of your character: do your current attributes meet their requirements, and does their scaling fit the direction you have invested in? A weapon can be appealing on feel but costly to support if it pulls you toward several attributes that do not otherwise fit your plan. That does not make it a bad choice; it means the change is a build decision, not just an equipment swap.

Upgrades matter alongside levels. Bandai Namco’s advanced-stat guide explains that weapon level improves scaling bonuses, while Ashes of War can modify scaling grades. That is why upgrading your chosen main weapon is a sensible focus: the weapon and its matching attributes work together. The one-weapon approach is practical guidance rather than a hard rule, and you can still try alternatives; just avoid splitting materials and levels across many unrelated weapons before you know which ones you want to keep using.

Compare build directions by the trade-offs you will feel

Rather than treating build labels as rankings, compare the choices on practical factors. The right balance depends on whether you want more room to recover, faster attacks, ranged options, or heavier equipment.

Decision factor What to consider Build implication
Survivability Vigor, shield access, armor, and how much room the setup gives you to recover from mistakes. A Vagabond opening is a straightforward melee default according to Mobalytics’ beginner guide, but raising Vigor is still important as you progress.
Pace and risk Slower Strength weapons can deliver large hits and stance pressure; faster Dexterity weapons support quick attacks and may apply status effects. Choose the attack rhythm you can use consistently. Do not invest in Strength or Dexterity by class label alone; check the weapon’s scaling.
Range and resource use Sorceries and incantations can offer ranged options, while spells, weapon skills, and spirit summons use FP. A caster or frequent skill user has more reason to consider Mind than a player who relies mainly on ordinary melee attacks.
Equipment burden Heavier weapons and armor use more equipment load. Keep the total at 69.9% or below for a medium roll or lighter, or adjust your equipment and Endurance.
Flexibility Your starting class shapes your opening kit, but does not lock your eventual direction. Pick an origin for its early advantages and preferred opening style, then let the weapons and spells you use guide later investments.

These comparisons help make the class choice concrete. If surviving mistakes is your priority, the Vagabond’s shield, armor, and health-oriented opening package may feel more forgiving, while Vigor remains useful whichever origin you select. If you favor quick attacks, a Dexterity direction may suit the pace; if you want heavier hits and stance pressure, a Strength direction may appeal. Neither direction is a universal upgrade over the other. Range is another trade-off: spells can let you attack from a distance, but casting consumes FP, and melee skills and summons also compete for that resource.

A simple leveling decision check

Before spending a level, ask what is currently preventing you from playing the way you want. This keeps the character focused without requiring a rigid point-by-point build plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • You die after a small number of mistakes: prioritize Vigor rather than assuming more damage will solve the problem.
  • You cannot use the weapon you want effectively: check its requirements first, then consider the attributes its scaling rewards.
  • You run out of FP while casting or using skills: consider Mind if those tools are central to your approach.
  • You run low on stamina or cannot keep your preferred gear at a medium roll: consider Endurance, or change the equipment combination.
  • You are tempted to raise several damage stats: look at your main weapon and chosen spells. Invest in the attributes they need rather than spreading levels without a purpose.

These checks are a decision aid, not a fixed build prescription. Your class determines where you begin, while your current equipment and the way you actually fight are better guides to where your next level should go.

Build examples for a first playthrough

These are directions to develop, not exact point-by-point templates. The official material supports priorities and trade-offs, but a single stat spread would not suit every weapon, spell choice, or stage of play.

  • Forgiving melee: Start Vagabond if the shield-supported opening appeals to you. Raise Vigor as you learn, meet the requirements of a manageable main weapon, and focus damage investment on its scaling. Add Endurance if stamina or the weight of your preferred gear becomes limiting.
  • Aggressive dual-wielding: Warrior is a starting option if you prefer a faster, more aggressive opening. Keep Vigor in the plan rather than treating offense as a substitute for survivability, and choose your later damage investment based on the weapons’ requirements and scaling.
  • Ranged sorcery: Astrologer offers an Intelligence-oriented start. Put Intelligence in the plan for sorceries and consider Mind if you cast often; still check whether you want a close-range option and what its requirements ask of you.
  • Incantation utility: Prophet points toward Faith-based incantations, including healing and buffs. Decide how central incantations are to your play and use Faith and Mind to support the tools you actually rely on, while retaining enough Vigor and weapon support for your chosen approach.

Each route makes a different compromise: the melee directions lean on weapon use and survivability, while spell-centered starts need to account for both their spell attributes and FP use. None requires investing in every listed stat at once. A first-playthrough build becomes easier to manage when you decide what your main weapon or spell approach is, then add secondary tools only when they solve a real need.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the most beginner-friendly Elden Ring character build?

For a forgiving melee start, Vagabond is a practical default. Mobalytics’ beginner guide recommends it for its larger health pool, shield, armor, two weapons, and flexible stats. That is a guide publisher’s recommendation, not a universal best-build rule. Raise Vigor early and choose a weapon whose requirements and scaling fit your direction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What stats should I focus on as a new player?

Raise Vigor early so you have more HP to survive mistakes. Meet your weapon’s attribute requirements, then invest in the attributes its scaling rewards instead of spreading levels among every damage stat. Add Mind if you regularly use spells, weapon skills, or spirit summons; consider Endurance if stamina or equipment load is a constraint.

Does my starting class lock me into a build?

No. Bandai Namco describes class as a starting point: it gives you opening equipment and stats, but does not permanently limit your eventual direction. Choose the opening style you prefer, then let your weapons, spells, and actual needs guide later levels.

How much Vigor should I aim for?

Treat 40 Vigor as a broad progression milestone, not a first-hour requirement. Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s July 19, 2023 advanced-stat guide lists 1,450 HP at 40 Vigor, 1,900 at 60, and 2,100 at 99, illustrating diminishing returns. The guide says 60 can be worthwhile after a build’s other needs are covered; there is no one required target for every character.

How do I keep a medium roll?

Check your equipment-weight percentage in the game’s equipment information. Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s July 19, 2023 guide defines 30–69.9% as a normal or medium roll and 70–99.9% as heavy. Keep weight at 69.9% or less by changing gear or investing in Endurance if needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I upgrade one weapon or several?

For a first playthrough, consistently upgrading one main weapon is a useful way to focus materials and attribute investment. Weapon level improves scaling bonuses, so upgrades and matching stats support each other. You can try other weapons, but check their requirements and scaling before committing to a switch.

Is one starting class or weapon objectively best?

The guidance here does not establish a universal winner. Class and weapon choice depend on the pace, range, survivability, and equipment burden you prefer. Vagabond is a straightforward melee recommendation from Mobalytics, but a different class or weapon may fit your approach better.

Do all editions have the same starting classes?

Do not assume so. Bandai Namco’s class page describes ten starting classes, while its Elden Ring overview says Tarnished Edition includes two new starting classes. The official descriptions do not settle which editions and platforms expose every added class, so check the specific product and platform listing.

The Bottom Line

For a low-friction first run, choose Vagabond if you want a shield-supported melee opening, raise Vigor early, and build around one weapon whose moveset feels reliable. Meet its requirements, invest in the stats its scaling rewards, and add Mind or Endurance when FP, stamina, or equipment load becomes a real constraint. Warrior, Astrologer, and Prophet suit different opening rhythms; no class is a permanent lock or universal winner. Check your edition and platform if the starting-class roster matters to you.
