El Niño vs. La Niña: How Their Weather Impacts Differ

El Niño warms the central and eastern tropical Pacific; La Niña cools it. Their atmospheric effects shift seasonal weather odds, not local outcomes.

El Niño is the warm phase of ENSO; La Niña is its cool phase. They change Pacific Ocean temperatures, tropical rainfall and atmospheric circulation in different ways, shifting the seasonal odds of certain weather patterns. Neither phase dictates what will happen in a particular city or guarantees a specific storm.

What are El Niño and La Niña?

ENSO, the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, is a recurring pattern involving the tropical Pacific Ocean and atmosphere. Its phases are identified partly by sea-surface temperatures in the central and east-central equatorial Pacific, along with related changes in rainfall, surface pressure and winds. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center explains the ENSO phases and their atmospheric connections.

  • El Niño: The central and east-central equatorial Pacific is warmer than average.
  • La Niña: Those waters are cooler than average.
  • Neutral: Conditions are nearer their long-term averages, rather than clearly in either phase.

The contrast in ocean temperature matters because the warmest tropical waters help determine where moist air rises and heavy rain forms. When that rainfall pattern moves, it can alter circulation far beyond the tropics.

How do the phases change winds and rainfall?

El Niño: warmer water and rain shift east

During El Niño, the easterly trade winds across the equatorial Pacific weaken. Warm surface water and the main zone of rising, rain-producing air shift eastward from the western Pacific toward the central and eastern Pacific. The resulting change in heat and rainfall influences large-scale atmospheric circulation.

La Niña: stronger trades keep the rain farther west

During La Niña, the trade winds strengthen. They push warm surface water farther west, while cooler water rises in the eastern Pacific; the main zone of tropical convection and rainfall stays farther west, near Indonesia and the western Pacific. These different patterns can shift downstream winds, the jet stream and average storm tracks. NOAA’s overview of El Niño and ENSO describes the linked ocean-and-atmosphere pattern.

What weather patterns are typical in a U.S. winter?

The familiar U.S. contrast is a seasonal tendency, not a city-by-city forecast. NOAA describes this typical pattern:

Region El Niño winter tendency La Niña winter tendency
Southern tier, from California to the Carolinas Often cooler and wetter than average Departures tend to be broadly opposite, but are not an exact reversal
Southern Alaska and the U.S. Pacific Northwest Often warmer than average Departures tend to be broadly opposite, but are not an exact reversal
California and the Pacific Northwest storm track The Pacific jet often dips eastward and the typical winter storm track shifts south, tending to bring moisture toward California while leaving the Pacific Northwest relatively drier The jet tends to shift west toward the central Pacific; local effects vary

Very strong El Niño events can shift the storm track farther south. These broad patterns help explain seasonal odds, not the path or outcome of any particular storm. NOAA’s El Niño and La Niña FAQ outlines typical U.S. impacts, while its ENSO weather impacts guide describes jet-stream and storm-track shifts.

How do El Niño and La Niña influence hurricane seasons?

ENSO affects the background conditions that help or hinder tropical cyclones, and the pattern differs by basin. A key factor is vertical wind shear: stronger shear can disrupt storm development, while weaker shear can be more favorable.

Phase Atlantic Eastern and central Pacific
El Niño Tends to increase wind shear and suppress hurricane activity Tends to reduce wind shear and favor more activity
La Niña Tends to favor more activity, including more deep-tropics storms Tends to favor fewer hurricanes

NOAA notes that deep-tropics Atlantic storms during La Niña can have a greater likelihood of becoming major hurricanes and threatening the Caribbean or United States. This is a basin-level risk tendency, not a prediction that a particular storm will form, intensify or make landfall. See NOAA’s ENSO overview for the hurricane relationships.

Does ENSO cause a particular drought, flood, storm or fire?

Not by itself, and timing alone does not establish cause. ENSO can shift the odds of drought, flooding, heat and other extremes, but the affected place and direction of the risk depend on the event and season. Other climate influences and local weather conditions also matter.

As NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center puts it, “It is inaccurate to label individual storms or events as a La Niña or El Niño event.” A specific event needs its own attribution evidence; it should not be assigned to an ENSO phase simply because it occurred during one. NOAA CPC’s FAQ discusses this distinction.

How often do El Niño and La Niña occur, and how long do they last?

These are typical ranges, not a fixed schedule or duration. According to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center FAQ, ENSO episodes generally recur every 3–5 years, with historical gaps ranging from 2–7 years. El Niño typically lasts 9–12 months; La Niña typically lasts 1–3 years. Both phases tend to develop from March through June, peak from December through April, and weaken from May through July. Individual episodes differ. NOAA CPC’s ENSO FAQ provides these typical timings.

What does NOAA’s September 2026 outlook say?

In its outlook issued September 2026, NOAA CPC assigned the following probabilities to El Niño for overlapping three-month seasons. These are forecast probabilities, not guarantees that El Niño conditions or a particular local impact will occur.

Three-month season El Niño probability
ASO 2026, SON 2026, OND 2026, NDJ 2026–27, DJF 2026–27 and JFM 2027 100% for each season
FMA 2027 97%
MAM 2027 82%
AMJ 2027 43%

The outlook is time-sensitive: NOAA CPC updates its probabilities, so consult the official ENSO probabilities page for the latest issue.

The practical difference

El Niño and La Niña begin with opposite Pacific temperature patterns and shift tropical rainfall and circulation in different directions. Those shifts can tilt seasonal weather and hurricane odds, including familiar U.S. winter patterns, but they are not mirror-image forecasts and cannot tell you exactly what will happen locally.
