Voicemail still matters—missed calls don’t always translate to missed messages, especially when you need proof, context, or time-stamped audio. Samsung Galaxy phones make voicemail fairly straightforward, but the exact steps depend on your carrier and whether you have Visual Voicemail.
This guide walks you through every reliable way to retrieve voicemail on your Samsung, including the fastest dialer method, using the Phone app, and troubleshooting when messages won’t appear or playback fails.

Why Retrieving Voicemail on Samsung Matters
Voicemail is more than a backup for missed calls. It preserves the caller’s message, often with a timestamp and sender information, which can help with follow-ups, documentation, and resolving time-sensitive issues.
On Samsung devices running One UI (Android 12–14 in most cases), the Phone app typically provides a single place to view and play messages—when your carrier supports Visual Voicemail.

Before You Start: What You Need
- Your Samsung Galaxy phone (any modern model using the default Phone app).
- Carrier service (voicemail isn’t universal across MVNOs and all plans).
- Wi‑Fi or mobile data if you’re using Visual Voicemail or a carrier app.
- A working voicemail setup (your greeting and mailbox may need initial configuration).
If you’re unsure whether you have Visual Voicemail, don’t guess—try the Phone app method below. If voicemail appears as an audio list with playback controls, you likely have Visual Voicemail.
Method 1: Call Your Voicemail from the Dialer
This method works even when your voicemail list won’t load in the Phone app. You’re essentially dialing your carrier’s voicemail access number.
Step-by-step
- Open Phone (the green/blue handset icon).
- Tap Keypad.
- Dial one of the common voicemail access options below (try in order):
Use the option most likely to match your carrier:
- Method A: Dial
123(common on many networks, not universal). - Method B: Dial
1then voicemail number from your carrier instructions (varies). - Method C: Dial
*86(widely used on Verizon and compatible setups; verify with your carrier if it fails). - Method D: Dial your carrier’s voicemail access number (if provided in your account or carrier app).
- Press the Call button.
- When prompted, enter your voicemail password (if requested).
- Follow the automated prompts to play new messages.
If you don’t know the voicemail access code for your plan, check your carrier’s account portal or app, then use Method 4 in this guide.
Method 2: Use the Phone App (Voicemail / Visual Voicemail)
On many Samsung phones, voicemail shows as a dedicated tab or as a voicemail widget inside the Phone app. With Visual Voicemail, you can tap a message to play it without listening to the full automated menu.

Step-by-step
- Open the Phone app.
- Look for one of these UI paths (varies by One UI version and carrier):
- Tab approach: Tap Voicemail (or Messages if your build labels it that way).
- History/list approach: Tap Recents, then find a Voicemail entry or link.
- More menu: Tap ⋮ (three dots) or More, then select Settings or Voicemail if shown.
- If you see a list of messages, tap a message to play.
- Use on-screen controls to play, pause, delete, or save (availability depends on carrier).
If you see a prompt to set up voicemail, follow it; Visual Voicemail often requires your mailbox to be initialized.
Method 3: Check Voicemail by Calling the Voicemail Number via Speed Dial
Some Samsung setups let you store voicemail access as a single shortcut, which reduces errors and speeds up repeated retrieval. This is especially useful if your carrier uses a voicemail number other than *86.
Step-by-step
- Open Phone → Keypad.
- Enter your carrier’s voicemail access code.
- After entering the code, save it (depending on your Samsung build, this may appear as Add to contacts or Create shortcut).
- Name the contact shortcut Voicemail or My Voicemail.
- Tap the shortcut whenever you need to retrieve messages.
If your build doesn’t offer saving a dialer code, just bookmark the carrier app method below (Method 4) instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMethod 4: Use the Carrier App for Visual Voicemail
Many carriers provide Visual Voicemail through their own apps or account portals. This often gives you the best experience: message lists, transcripts (if supported), and better playback controls.

Common carrier app paths (examples)
Availability varies by region and plan, but these are common patterns:
- Verizon: The Verizon app often includes voicemail and message management features when Visual Voicemail is active.
- AT&T: The AT&T app frequently supports voicemail management and Visual Voicemail where available.
- T-Mobile: Visual Voicemail and voicemail management are typically offered via T-Mobile’s app ecosystem when supported on your line.
Step-by-step
- Install or open your carrier’s official app (from the Galaxy Store or Google Play).
- Sign in using the phone number on the line you want to check.
- Find the section labeled Voicemail, Messages, or Visual Voicemail.
- Select a voicemail message and tap Play.
If the app shows voicemail is not enabled, you may need to set up voicemail from your dialer using Method 1.
Method 5: Retrieve Voicemail on Wi‑Fi When Cellular Is Limited
Voicemail retrieval can fail when cellular service is unstable. If your carrier supports Wi‑Fi Calling and Visual Voicemail depends on data, checking over Wi‑Fi can help.
Step-by-step
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Connections.
- Tap Wi‑Fi Calling.
- Turn Wi‑Fi Calling to On (confirm any prompts).
- Connect to a stable Wi‑Fi network.
- Then try again using Method 2 (Phone app) or Method 4 (carrier app).
If Wi‑Fi Calling is unavailable on your line, you’ll have to rely on mobile data or the dialer-based voicemail call (Method 1).

Troubleshooting: Voicemail Won’t Load or You Can’t Hear Messages
When voicemail retrieval doesn’t work, it’s usually one of four things: carrier voicemail access issue, mailbox not set up, wrong password, or a temporary network/data problem.
1) Voicemail list is empty or messages don’t appear
- Confirm you’re checking the correct phone line (especially on dual-SIM phones).
- Force close the Phone app and reopen it.
- Toggle Airplane mode on for 10 seconds, then off.
- Switch networks (Wi‑Fi ↔ mobile data), then retry.
If the dialer method works but the list doesn’t, Visual Voicemail may be temporarily unavailable on your account.
2) You can’t reach voicemail through the dialer
- Try a different access code (for example, if *86 fails, try your carrier’s official voicemail number).
- Confirm you have active service on the SIM slot you’re using.
- Restart the phone.
- Verify you’re dialing the access code exactly (no extra spaces, correct characters like * and #).
If your voicemail access prompt disappears immediately, carrier provisioning might be incomplete—use your carrier app to confirm voicemail is active.

3) You reached voicemail, but playback fails or sounds garbled
- Try playback once using speaker, then once using the earpiece.
- Temporarily disable Bluetooth audio and retry.
- Check if your phone is in Do Not Disturb or if a headset routing setting is stuck.
- Use Method 4 to see if the carrier app plays the message more reliably.
4) Wrong voicemail password loops you repeatedly
- Use the carrier’s official instructions to reset voicemail password (often through the carrier app or account portal).
- If supported, you can usually reset the password by accessing voicemail setup menus from the dialer.
- After reset, retry voicemail using Method 1.
5) Visual Voicemail asks you to enable or verify your mailbox
- Use Method 1 to access voicemail and complete setup prompts (greeting, password rules, mailbox confirmation).
- Return to Method 2 and refresh the voicemail list.
- If it still doesn’t populate, wait 30–60 minutes; carrier provisioning changes can take time to reflect.
Common Mistakes That Block Voicemail Access
- Checking voicemail on the wrong SIM (dual-SIM devices can route calls differently).
- Using the wrong voicemail access code (*86 isn’t universal).
- Not having voicemail initialized (new lines may require setup prompts before messages appear).
- Using call forwarding incorrectly—if you forward calls to another number, voicemail behavior can change depending on carrier rules.
- Low storage or permission issues—if the Phone app can’t handle audio caching, playback may fail.
Comparison: Visual Voicemail vs Traditional Voicemail
| Feature | Visual Voicemail (Phone app / carrier app) | Traditional Voicemail (dialer menu) |
|---|---|---|
| Message discovery | Tap-to-play list | Automated prompts |
| Playback speed | Usually faster (choose the message) | Often slower (you may hear menus) |
| Works when data is down | Sometimes limited | Usually more reliable |
| Availability | Depends on carrier and plan | More widely supported |
If Visual Voicemail is unreliable, use the dialer method as your fallback. If the dialer works but the list doesn’t, the carrier’s Visual Voicemail data feed is likely the issue.

FAQs
Why does my Samsung show a voicemail notification, but I can’t find any messages?
That can happen when the notification is delayed or tied to a different SIM line than the one you’re checking. Try switching the active SIM in your Phone app call settings, then use the dialer method (Method 1) to confirm whether the mailbox has messages.
Does every Samsung Galaxy phone support Visual Voicemail?
No. Visual Voicemail depends mainly on your carrier and plan. Samsung’s Phone app may show a Voicemail tab, but the feature can be missing or limited when your carrier doesn’t provision it.
What if I forgot my voicemail password?
Use your carrier’s official app or account portal to reset it, or follow voicemail password reset prompts by accessing voicemail via the dialer (Method 1). After resetting, the mailbox may require a short propagation time before Visual Voicemail updates.
Can I retrieve voicemail from another phone?
Usually yes, as long as you can access your voicemail mailbox from the same line. Dial your voicemail access code from a different phone, then enter your voicemail password when prompted.
Do transcripts work on Samsung?
Some carriers and Visual Voicemail systems provide voicemail transcription. Support varies, and transcript accuracy depends on carrier processing and audio quality.
Bottom Line
To retrieve voicemail on your Samsung reliably, start with the Phone app method (Method 2) when Visual Voicemail is available. If anything looks off, fall back to the dialer-based voicemail call (Method 1) to confirm your mailbox has messages.
When voicemail still won’t appear, focus on the most common causes: wrong SIM line, incorrect access code, missing mailbox setup, or temporary network/data issues—then use the carrier app (Method 4) to cross-check.
