Laboratory wire-cell results include a measured 10.6% conversion efficiency for a 1 cm² device; a separate claim of more than 17% for large-area arrays is a projection, not a measured array result. Silicon wires are a promising research architecture, not an established commercial-panel design.
How do silicon nanowire solar cells work?
Silicon wire solar cells use an array of upright, thin silicon structures—often called microwires or nanowires—to manage light and collect the electrical charges sunlight creates. The exact dimensions and fabrication methods vary by design.

A flat silicon absorber must balance two tasks: absorb light, and let the resulting electrons and holes reach a collecting junction before they recombine. A wire array can scatter and trap light, lengthening its path through silicon. In a radial-junction design, the junction wraps around each wire, so charges can travel toward a nearby collection interface rather than crossing a thick, flat absorber.

Why absorbing light is not enough
Absorption tells you how much incoming light a structure takes in. Conversion efficiency tells you how much of the incident solar power becomes electrical power. A cell can absorb light well yet lose performance through recombination, resistive losses, or imperfect contacts. Those measures should not be treated as interchangeable.
Are silicon microwire solar cells more efficient?
There is no single efficiency for “silicon wire solar cells”: reported values describe different devices and measurements. The clearest measured array-cell result in the cited studies is 10.6% AM1.5G conversion efficiency for a 1 cm² laboratory cell. A separate study measured a single-wire device, while its higher large-array figure was projected rather than demonstrated in a large-area cell.

Measured results and projected potential
| Study and device | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Um et al., 2013; 1 cm² microwire-array cell with a 25 μm silicon absorption region | 10.6% AM1.5G conversion efficiency after adding a conformal 200 nm SiO2 coating; the cell had previously reached 8.71% | Measured result for that laboratory device, not a general value for wire cells or commercial panels |
| Kelzenberg et al., 2011; single-wire radial p–n junction device | Up to 9.0% apparent photovoltaic efficiency, with approximately 600 mV open-circuit voltage and fill factor above 80% | Single-wire measurement, not a large-area array-cell result |
| Kelzenberg et al., 2011; proposed large-area arrays | Greater than 17% potential | Suggested by projective measurements and optoelectronic simulations; not a measured large-area result |
In the 2013 experiment, the 10.6% cell also had an open-circuit voltage of 0.56 V, a short-circuit current density of 25.2 mA/cm², and a fill factor of 75.2%. The authors reported that the conformal SiO2 layer reduced reflection and improved the champion cell’s efficiency from 8.71% to 10.6%. Um et al., “Si Microwire Solar Cells: Improved Efficiency with a Conformal SiO2 Layer,” 2013
The single-wire study’s projected figure is useful as an indication of design potential, but it cannot be presented as an achieved efficiency for a large-area cell or module. Kelzenberg et al., “High-performance Si microwire photovoltaics,” 2011

What does the high absorption figure mean?
A 2010 study reported up to 96% peak absorption with silicon wire arrays whose wires occupied less than 5% of the array’s area. It also reported up to 85% day-integrated absorption of above-bandgap direct sunlight under the study’s experimental conditions. These are absorption measurements, not power-conversion efficiencies.
The same work reported a peak external quantum efficiency of 0.89 and near-unity broadband internal quantum efficiency for collection through a radial semiconductor/liquid junction. These results describe that study’s particular structure and measurement conditions; they do not establish the efficiency of a commercial wire-cell product. Can silicon nanowires make solar panels cheaper?
Using less silicon in the absorber could be an advantage, but the cited results do not show that wire-based panels cost less to manufacture. A useful comparison would need to account for the entire process: producing uniform wires, forming consistent radial junctions, reducing surface recombination, adding precise electrical contacts, and scaling fabrication to useful areas and production volumes.
A 2017 review discusses large-scale silicon-nanowire fabrication and the practical requirements for solar applications, while the 2020 review highlights device and collection challenges. Neither cited study establishes a lower commercial cost for microwire panels. Zhang, “Large-Scale Fabrication of Silicon Nanowires for Solar Energy Applications,” 2017
Are silicon microwire solar cells commercially available?
The cited papers establish experimental devices and research directions, not product availability. The 2020 review still frames high efficiency as a development challenge. A 2026 perspective discusses the industrial evolution of silicon photovoltaic technologies but does not identify microwire arrays as a fielded commercial architecture. The evidence here supports treating microwire cells as a research approach; it does not establish that no product is sold anywhere. “State-of-play of contending silicon photovoltaic technologies,” 2026
For context, the 2025 edition of the solar-cell efficiency tables lists a 27.4 ± 0.4% crystalline-silicon cell efficiency, measured in September 2024. That figure concerns a conventional crystalline-silicon cell, not a microwire cell, and is not a panel or module efficiency. It should not be compared with the microwire results as if the devices shared the same architecture or test basis. Green et al., “Solar Cell Efficiency Tables (Version 66),” 2025
Quick Recap
What to check when comparing wire-cell claims
- What was measured: absorption, quantum efficiency, or solar-to-electric power-conversion efficiency?
- What was the device: a single wire, an array cell with a stated area, or a proposed large-area design?
- How were charges collected: what junction geometry and contacts were used, and what voltage, current density, and fill factor were reported?
- How were surface losses addressed: was passivation or another surface treatment used, and what change in device performance was measured?
- Was scale demonstrated: does the result come from a fabricated device, or from measurements and simulations used to project array performance?
