eero supports VPN passthrough, but it does not provide network-wide VPN routing itself. You can use a VPN app on supported devices, enable Guardian VPN on up to five supported devices with eero Plus, or put a VPN-client router between your modem or ONT and your eero gateway. These approaches protect different groups of devices and require different setup choices.
Does eero support VPNs?
Yes. eero says it supports VPN passthrough: encrypted traffic from a VPN app on an individual device, or from a VPN-enabled router placed upstream of eero, can pass through its network. But passthrough is not the same as eero acting as a VPN client for every device on your home network. eero states that it “supports VPN passthrough but doesn’t currently offer network-wide VPN support.” See eero’s VPN support article.

Choose the setup that fits your devices
| Option | Devices covered | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| VPN app on each device | Devices that can install and run the VPN provider’s app | A compatible app and VPN account on each device |
| Guardian VPN through eero Plus | Up to five supported devices | An eero Plus subscription and supported devices and app versions |
| VPN-client router upstream of eero | Devices routed through that router, depending on its configuration | A router with VPN client functionality and support for the provider’s protocol or configuration |
Use Guardian VPN on supported devices
eero Plus includes Guardian VPN for up to five supported devices. To enable it, use the eero app’s VPN powered by Guardian setup flow; the Guardian setup guide gives eero’s instructions. This is device-based protection, not a setting that makes every phone, computer, TV, or smart-home product on the eero network use a VPN.

Use VPN apps directly on individual devices
Install and configure your VPN provider’s app on each computer or phone that needs VPN protection. eero’s passthrough support means the encrypted connection can pass through the eero network. This option avoids changing router topology, but it only covers devices that can run a compatible VPN app. eero does not claim that every streaming box, game console, or smart-home device can install one.
Route devices through a VPN router
For broader household coverage, use a router with a VPN client function between the modem or ONT and the eero gateway. The basic topology is:
Rank #2
- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Modem or ONT → VPN-enabled router → eero gateway → eero mesh
Configure the upstream router to connect to your VPN provider using a protocol and configuration supported by both the router firmware and the provider. Then connect the eero gateway downstream. eero says it can pass encrypted traffic from an upstream VPN-enabled router; its setup guide describes the usual connection from the gateway eero to a modem, ONT, or modem/router combo.

Router VPN features are not interchangeable. A VPN server lets remote devices connect back to your home network; a VPN client sends traffic from your home network to a VPN provider. Confirm that the exact model and firmware support client routing before buying or configuring a router.
Example: ASUS VPN Fusion
ASUS documents VPN Fusion on the RT-AX86U Pro product page. ASUS describes assigning selected devices to VPN tunnels while ordinary internet traffic continues for others, and lists OpenVPN and WireGuard support. Its WireGuard setup instructions call for checking the model and firmware, confirming the provider’s connection type, and importing a configuration file. These are manufacturer feature descriptions, not independent measurements of speed, range, or reliability.

Check routing and bridge mode before changing connections
Adding a VPN router changes which device sits between your home network and the internet. Whether the setup needs bridge mode, how traffic is routed, and whether double NAT occurs depend on the ISP equipment, router, and network configuration. Do not assume that one wiring diagram produces identical behavior for every household.
eero can coexist with another router, although it says it is designed to replace one. eero’s existing-router guidance recommends putting either eeros or the other router in bridge mode to keep a single SSID and reduce interference. The choice determines which device routes the network:

- Bridge the eeros: They act as access points managed by the other router. eero says its advanced networking features are unavailable in this arrangement, though the eeros continue to provide Wi-Fi; one eero must remain wired. See eero’s bridge-mode explanation.
- Bridge the upstream router: eero manages network traffic, retaining eero app features. Whether the upstream device can be bridged, and how to do it, depends on its model and ISP.
With a modem/router combo, double NAT or bridge mode may be relevant in some configurations. eero’s ISP and modem guidance and modem/router bridge instructions note that steps vary by equipment; contact your ISP if its requirements are unclear before changing modes.
What to expect from VPN performance
The cited eero and router documentation describes features and setup, not independently measured VPN throughput or latency. It also does not establish whether a particular configuration will access a particular streaming service. Results depend on the devices, router, VPN service, network configuration, and destination; compare current independent tests or provider-specific guidance for those questions rather than treating passthrough or a feature list as a performance guarantee.
