Its advertised coverage and speed figures may suit a smaller home or a broadband plan within those limits, but they are manufacturer specifications—not independently measured results. Choose the router when you need a gateway or Ethernet ports; choose the wireless-only Extender only to add coverage to an existing eero mesh.
What is the eero 6?
The eero 6 is a mesh Wi-Fi router using Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax). It broadcasts on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands and includes a built-in Zigbee smart-home hub; eero says it works with Alexa. The router has two auto-sensing gigabit Ethernet ports that can serve as WAN or LAN connections. Its companion eero 6 Extender is a different device: it joins an existing eero mesh wirelessly and has no Ethernet ports.

Published hardware specifications include a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, 512 MB RAM, 4 GB flash storage, Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0, MU/SU-MIMO, OFDMA, transmit beamforming, and WMM. How much coverage and speed does eero 6 offer?
eero advertises coverage of up to 1,500 square feet per eero 6 device and support for more than 75 connected devices. Its product page presents system speeds of up to 500 Mbps wirelessly and 900 Mbps over a wired connection. In eero’s comparison table, the router is listed at up to 900 Mbps wireless and up to 1 Gbps wired. These figures come from different manufacturer pages and configurations; they are not results from independent testing.

Coverage is not a promise that every room will receive a particular signal or speed. eero says actual range and performance vary with local regulations, network configuration, interference, connected devices and their usage, building materials, and obstructions. As eero puts it, “Actual range and performance can vary, and maximum supported speeds may not be available to all customers” because of these factors. A home’s layout and the location of each mesh unit matter, so a square-footage figure alone cannot determine how many devices you need.
Even when a router can support a published maximum, your internet plan, wireless conditions, and client devices can constrain real throughput. A device that lacks Wi-Fi 6 will not gain Wi-Fi 6 capabilities simply by connecting to this router.

eero 6 router or eero 6 Extender?

Do not treat the devices as interchangeable: the Extender cannot replace the router as a wired gateway, and it cannot provide Ethernet for a TV, console, or other device. Check eero’s eero 6 and eero 6 Extender specifications before choosing a node.
Will older Wi-Fi devices work with eero 6?
Older devices can connect using the Wi-Fi standards they support, but they will not gain Wi-Fi 6 features. There is also an important qualification for mixed eero systems: eero says the Wi-Fi 6 mesh backhaul is not used across a system combining Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 5 eero devices. That mix may result in lower speeds and higher latency when roaming between generations. If your existing eero setup includes Wi-Fi 5 units, factor that into an upgrade decision; eero explains this in its Wi-Fi 6 overview.

Which eero 6 configuration should you buy?
- One router: Consider it if you need a gateway and the coverage for your layout is adequate. Add mesh nodes only where the home’s shape or obstructions make them necessary.
- A router-plus-extender kit: Consider it when you need an additional wireless mesh point and do not need Ethernet at that location.
- More routers: A router at another node may be preferable when you need Ethernet ports there; eero’s listed two-router pack uses two routers, unlike its three-pack, which contains one router and two extenders.
Before choosing by advertised speed, compare the figure with your internet plan and the capabilities of the devices you actually use. More coverage nodes are not automatically better if your home does not need them, and the per-device coverage claim is not a guarantee for a particular floor plan.

What this review can—and cannot—establish
The available evidence establishes eero’s design, published specifications, and its own performance caveats. It does not establish real-world speed, range, or reliability in a tested home. Treat the advertised maxima as product claims and use a documented independent test if measured performance is essential to your decision.
