Professional audio editing in Adobe Audition is less about stacking effects and more about making controlled decisions in the right order: preserve the original, organize the session, edit timing, repair problems conservatively, shape clarity, mix, verify loudness, and export the correct deliverables. That workflow works for podcasts, interviews, voice-over, music, online courses, video dialogue, sound effects, and damaged recordings.
Adobe’s June 2026 release is Audition 26.3. Menus, shortcuts, and feature availability can change, so compare the instructions below with the documentation for your installed release. Audition combines a file-focused Waveform Editor, a non-destructive Multitrack Editor, and a spectral view for frequency-specific repairs. Adobe describes the application’s recording, editing, restoration, mixing, video, and export capabilities at Adobe Audition.

What Adobe Audition is best at
Audition is a strong choice when you need precise waveform editing, dialogue cleanup, spectral repair, multitrack mixing, or a close workflow with Premiere Pro and other Adobe applications. It is particularly useful for:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Podcast and spoken-word editing
- Voice-over and interview cleanup
- Audio post-production for video
- Music and multitrack arrangements

Set up a project that protects your recordings
Before opening an effect, make a project structure that makes mistakes recoverable.
- Create a project folder with separate folders named
Originals,Sessions,Edited Audio,Music,Sound Effects,Exports, andMasters. - Keep original recordings read-only or clearly labeled. Never use the only copy as a working file.
- Use descriptive, versioned names such as
Interview_Ep05_original.wav,Interview_Ep05_edit_v02.sesx,Interview_Ep05_master_48k24.wav, andInterview_Ep05_web.mp3. - Save incremental session versions instead of relying on one session file.
- Confirm sample rate, bit depth, channel layout, and the delivery requirements before substantial processing.
Changing sample rate is a format conversion, not a quality upgrade. Make it deliberately and, where possible, only once. A Multitrack session is generally safer for assembling a project because clips, routing, automation, and effects can be revised without repeatedly rewriting the source. Waveform processing can alter the file, so use File > Save As, a duplicate, or a versioned export before destructive work.
Know Audition’s three working views
Waveform Editor
Use the Waveform Editor for detailed work on one file: selecting and deleting material, fades, amplitude changes, format conversion, restoration, and spectral repairs. These edits can be destructive when you process and save the file, so keep the original untouched.
Multitrack Editor
Use the Multitrack Editor to arrange clips, record multiple sources, apply clip, track, and bus effects, automate volume, route signals, and create a mixdown. Dialogue, music, ambience, and effects can remain on separate tracks while you refine the project.
Spectral Frequency Display
The spectral display shows frequency energy over time: time runs horizontally and frequency vertically. Bright or dense areas generally represent stronger energy. Hum appears as narrow horizontal bands; clicks often appear as vertical spikes. Isolated mouth noises and other disturbances can sometimes be selected and reduced visually. Adobe’s explanation of the display is available at Displaying audio in the Waveform Editor.
Spectral work is normally associated with the Waveform Editor rather than the ordinary Multitrack timeline. Check the exact controls in Audition 26.3 or later before following a menu path from an older tutorial.
Import and inspect before editing
Open the files and listen once without making changes. Inspect:
- Sample rate, bit depth, mono or stereo configuration
- Clipping or flattened peaks
- Background noise and electrical hum
- DC offset and excessive silence
- Uneven recording levels
- Phase or mono-compatibility problems in stereo material
Zoom out to understand the arrangement, then zoom in to find clicks, discontinuities, and accurate cut points. A waveform shows amplitude, not overall quality; always listen. Add markers for mistakes, breaths, music cues, repair candidates, and picture-sync points. Adobe’s help index covers markers, waveform display, selection, analysis, and supported formats at Audition help.

Make clean edits before processing
Edit the structure
In the Waveform Editor, select a range and cut, copy, paste, or delete it. In Multitrack, split and move clips on the timeline so the original source remains available. Remove false starts, repeated phrases, unusable takes, and genuinely distracting pauses, but preserve pauses and breaths that make speech sound natural.
Prevent clicks and chopped words
Do not cut through a consonant, word tail, or room-tone transition. Cut at a suitable waveform crossing and add a short fade or crossfade. Abrupt changes in background ambience are often more noticeable than the edit itself; retain consistent room tone or add a clean room-tone bed where appropriate.
Correct levels in the right place
- Clip gain: changes one clip before track processing.
- Track volume: changes everything routed through that track.
- Effect output: changes the level after an effect.
- Bus or master level: changes the combined signal.
Correct obvious clip-to-clip differences first. A compressor should not be forced to repair badly inconsistent editing gain.

Automatic silence removal can make speech unnatural, chop breaths, and expose changing room tone. Review every edit and use short fades. Adobe’s support material includes selection, deletion, fades, markers, history, silence removal, and loudness tools at Adobe Audition support.
Repair common recording problems
Steady hiss or room noise
- Find a section containing only the unwanted steady noise.
- Select it and capture a noise-reduction profile. The default shortcut is
Shift+P. - Select the target audio and open the Noise Reduction process.
- Preview at a moderate amount, then reduce it if the voice becomes metallic, watery, or unnaturally thin.
- Compare the processed result with the untreated original at matched loudness.
There is no universal percentage that works for every recording. The right amount depends on noise consistency, signal-to-noise ratio, voice or instrument content, and the type of program. Adaptive Noise Reduction can follow changing noise, but it can also pump or smear ambience. Use the least aggressive treatment that solves the actual problem.
Hum and electrical buzz
Use DeHummer when a stable electrical fundamental and its harmonics dominate the recording. Listen after processing: an aggressive notch can remove useful low-frequency content or leave a hollow voice. Spectral selection is useful when the hum affects only a short region.
Clicks, mouth noises, and isolated events
DeClicker, Diagnostics, and spectral selection can target short disturbances. In the spectral display, select only the offending energy and reduce or heal it rather than processing the whole file. A repair that is inaudible in isolation may still sound better than a broad filter.

DeClipper may improve intelligibility, but it cannot guarantee recovery of the original waveform. Flattened peaks mean information was lost. If an alternate recording or rerecording exists, it is usually more reliable than increasingly aggressive restoration.

Reverb and overlapping speakers
Restoration can improve severe reverberation or overlapping speech, but it cannot reliably recreate information that was never recorded. Better microphone placement, acoustic treatment, or another source may be the real solution.
Use EQ for a diagnosed problem
Corrective EQ is more dependable than a universal “voice enhancer.” Listen for low-frequency rumble, proximity buildup, boxiness, nasal midrange, harsh upper midrange, sibilance, and dullness. Cut a problem moderately or narrowly before considering a boost elsewhere. Apply a high-pass filter only when unwanted low-frequency content is present.
Bypass the EQ and compare at matched loudness. Treble boosts can make a dull recording seem clearer while increasing hiss and sibilance. EQ cannot fully compensate for poor microphone placement, a bad room, or a speaker positioned too far from the microphone.
Control dynamics without flattening the performance
Compression
Compression reduces dynamic range and can make dialogue more consistent. Start only after clip gain is reasonably even. Ratio, threshold, attack, release, and makeup gain depend on the source; fixed settings are not universal. Listen for pumping, fatigue, exaggerated room noise, and lost expression.
De-essing
Compression or EQ can make “s” sounds more prominent. Use a de-esser only where sibilance is distracting, and compare it with bypassed audio so consonants do not become dull or lisped.
Limiting and normalization
A limiter prevents peaks from exceeding a ceiling. Normalization changes overall level but does not fix inconsistent dynamics. Expansion or gating can reduce low-level material, but it may chop word beginnings, breaths, and room tone. For speech, a sensible order is manual level correction, corrective EQ, moderate compression, de-essing if needed, final limiting, then loudness measurement.
Use Essential Sound as a starting point
The Essential Sound panel can classify clips as dialogue, music, ambience, or sound effects and provide guided treatments. It is useful for learning and for a fast first pass, but presets cannot hear context. A poor recording may need a specific spectral repair rather than a generic dialogue preset. Always audition the result and compare it with the untreated clip.
Build a controlled multitrack mix
A practical session layout is:
| Track | Typical content |
|---|---|
| 1 | Host or primary voice |
| 2 | Guest or secondary voice |
| 3 | Music |
| 4 | Ambience or room tone |
| 5 | Sound effects |
| Bus tracks | Dialogue, music, and effects groups |
| Master | Final output monitoring and metering |
Keep related material on separate tracks. Use clip effects for one problematic clip, track effects for a consistent channel treatment, and buses for group processing. Route deliberately and monitor through the master bus.

Equipped with a 3.5mm to 6.35mm adapter and a USB-C to USB-A data cable, you can easily use it by directly connecting to your mobile phone or computer
Automation and music ducking
Use volume envelopes or automation to lower music under speech instead of crushing the entire music track. The reduction should make words intelligible without making the music disappear. Crossfade ambience and music clips, and use clip stretching only when it preserves the source naturally.
Monitor on more than one system
Check headphones and speakers, and test the mix in mono. If stereo becomes thin or partly disappears in mono, inspect channel polarity, phase, and excessive stereo width before delivery.
Check loudness for the actual destination
Peak level and perceived loudness are different measurements. Peak level describes instantaneous amplitude; RMS is an average-based level; integrated and short-term loudness describe perceived program level over time; loudness range describes variation; true peak estimates inter-sample peaks that can clip after conversion.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the specification from the podcast host, streaming service, broadcaster, client, or video editor.
- Measure the complete program, not just its loudest excerpt.
- Inspect true peaks and correct major level inconsistencies.
- Measure again after limiting or other final processing.
- Export a lossless master before making compressed delivery copies.
Do not treat one LUFS value as correct for every digital-audio use. Adobe’s support resources include loudness matching and export guidance at Adobe Audition support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Export a master and delivery copies
Archival or mastering copy
Prefer WAV or another suitable lossless format. Preserve the intended sample rate and bit depth, and store the clearly labeled master separately from delivery files.
Web or general sharing
Use a compressed format when file size or the destination requires it. Select bitrate, channel configuration, and metadata for that destination. Listen to the encoded file, because lossy encoding can expose artifacts that are absent from the master.
Video
Confirm the video editor’s required sample rate, channel layout, filename convention, and format. Avoid unnecessary repeated transcoding and preserve the timeline duration so audio stays synchronized.

When Audition is—and is not—the right tool
Audition makes the most sense when dedicated waveform restoration, spectral repair, dialogue editing, or Adobe video integration is central to your work. Adobe requires an Adobe ID, and activation may require an internet connection; availability can vary by country and language. Subscription licensing may be unattractive for occasional users, and current hardware and operating-system requirements should be checked before installing.
| Alternative | Best fit | Trade-off compared with Audition |
|---|---|---|
| DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight | One application for video, color, effects, and audio post; a free version is available. Blackmagic listed Resolve Studio at $295 at the time of the cited information. | Less focused on standalone waveform restoration. |
| Audacity | A no-cost, simpler editor for recording, basic cleanup, trimming, and conversion. | Less integrated for advanced multitrack post-production and Adobe workflows. |
| REAPER | A customizable DAW for music, routing, scripting, and non-subscription ownership. | May require more setup for straightforward spoken-word restoration. |
Audacity and REAPER pricing and licensing can change, so verify the official pages before buying. No alternative is categorically better; the deciding factors are workflow, budget model, video integration, routing needs, and restoration requirements. Adobe’s current release documentation also notes that some CD authoring functions are no longer supported in Audition 26.3 and later, although extracting audio from CDs is not affected.

Metallic, watery, or pumping restoration
Undo the process, use a cleaner and shorter noise profile, lower the reduction amount, or repair only the worst sections spectrally. If the noise overlaps speech heavily, accept a smaller improvement rather than destroying the voice.
Clicks after an edit
Undo, zoom in, move the cut to a suitable waveform location, and add a short fade or crossfade. Check that a word tail was not removed.
Unnatural gaps between sentences
Restore some room tone, shorten the edit less aggressively, and use consistent fades. Silent digital holes often reveal an otherwise invisible cut.
Clipped or distorted source
Try DeClipper once and compare carefully. If flattened peaks remain harsh, locate an alternate recording or rerecord rather than stacking more processing.

Export passes peak checks but sounds too quiet
Measure integrated loudness and true peak against the actual delivery specification. Peak normalization alone does not establish program loudness.
The source was overwritten
Restore the original or an earlier version from your backup. Prevent recurrence by duplicating files before Waveform Editor processing and by saving versioned sessions.
Stereo collapses in mono
Check polarity and phase, reduce excessive width, and listen to the mono-compatible version before export.
