You can edit an existing photo by describing the change you want: open or upload the image in a supported editor, give one specific instruction, then inspect the result and refine or undo it. A prompt makes the request simpler; it does not guarantee a precise edit or leave every other pixel untouched.
What prompt-based photo editing can—and cannot—do
Instead of manually adjusting every control, you tell an image-editing feature what to change in ordinary language. Depending on the tool, you may be able to remove an object, reduce glare, alter a background, or change the lighting. For example, Google Photos lists requests such as “remove the glare” and “remove distractions from the background” in its Ask Photos editing guidance.

The request is interpreted by an image model, not executed as a guaranteed pixel-perfect instruction. An edit can miss part of an object, affect nearby details, or change something you wanted to keep. Treat the result as a draft to review.

1. Open the image in a supported tool
Choose a photo you have the right to edit. Then open it in a service that supports prompt-based editing. ChatGPT Images lets you upload an existing image and describe an edit, either directly or after selecting an area. Adobe Firefly lets you upload an image and enter a description. Google Photos places its Ask editing flow in the photo editor for eligible users. Their interfaces and availability are not identical.

2. Describe one clear change
A useful prompt identifies the area or object, says what result you want, and names details that should stay the same. For example:
Change [specific area or object] to [desired result]. Keep [important subject, composition, text, or other detail] unchanged.

This is a practical structure, not a guarantee. When precision matters, request one main change at a time rather than bundling unrelated edits. Adobe’s Firefly page gives examples such as removing a trash can or adding warm golden light; treat those as examples of the workflow, not proof that a particular wording will work on every image.
3. Generate the edit and inspect it against the original
Check whether the intended area changed and whether anything else did. Look closely at faces, hands, text, logos, object edges, and nearby background details if they matter to the image. OpenAI notes that a selected highlight may not be precise and that an edit can extend beyond the selected area in its ChatGPT Images editing instructions.

If the change spills into surrounding areas, narrow the wording, use a selection tool if the editor provides one, or undo and try again. A selection can help indicate where to work, but it is not an exact boundary.
4. Refine or save a copy
If the result is close, ask for one correction and repeat the details that must remain unchanged. OpenAI’s image editing guidance recommends using the previous output as the input for the next edit and restating important constraints if they drift. When the result is acceptable, save it using the editor’s available save or copy option; Google Photos describes saving edits in its help documentation.

Which prompt-editing workflow fits your needs?
These tools document ways to edit images with language, but the controls and eligibility rules differ. Choose by the workflow and access you need, not by assuming the same feature set or edit quality across services.

What to check before choosing a tool
- Access: Confirm that the feature is available on your device, account, and in your region. Google’s Photos and Gemini requirements differ.
- Localization: Check whether you can select the area to edit or must rely on a written description.
- Control: Compare the controls you need, such as model choice, aspect ratio, output resolution, or conversational refinement.
- Recovery: Find out how the editor handles undoing a change or saving a copy before you edit an important original.
- Intended use: Review the service’s terms for your planned personal or commercial use rather than assuming the tools have interchangeable terms.
Why your result may need another pass
Natural-language instructions can be ambiguous, and image edits may affect more than the requested object. Specify the location and desired result, say what must remain unchanged, and make successive corrections instead of adding several unrelated requests at once. If a detail is important, inspect it at full size before keeping the edit.
