EDF vs. Jet Turbine: Which Propulsion System Is Right for an RC Aircraft?

EDF is usually the more accessible entry into RC jets, while a model gas turbine offers a more realistic combustion-jet experience for experienced pilots. Learn how the systems differ and how to compare complete aircraft without assuming a universal speed or thrust winner.

For most pilots moving into RC jets, an electric ducted fan (EDF) is the more approachable starting point. It uses a rechargeable battery and an electric motor, while a model gas turbine burns fuel in a miniature turbine engine. EDFs generally reduce the entry barrier, but the aircraft still has to match your experience and the model’s setup. A turbine is the better fit when you specifically want combustion-engine sound and feel, accept greater cost and operating demands, and have the experience to manage them. There is no universal speed or thrust winner: compare complete, named aircraft with their installed power systems, not the propulsion labels alone.

What an EDF and a model turbine actually do

The two systems produce thrust by accelerating air rearward, but they do so with entirely different machines.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Electric ducted fan (EDF)

An EDF combines an electric motor, a multi-bladed impeller and a surrounding duct. The impeller draws air through the model’s intake, accelerates it, and sends it through a thrust tube at the rear. The motor receives power from a rechargeable flight battery, normally a high-capacity, high-discharge lithium-polymer (LiPo) pack. The fan, motor, electronic speed controller, battery, wiring and duct are therefore one propulsion system; changing one part can affect the others.

An EDF may look and sound like a jet engine from the outside, but it does not burn fuel. Its impeller is driven by an electric motor. The sound comes from the motor, fan blades and airflow rather than combustion.

Model gas turbine

A model turbine contains the same broad stages as a full-size gas turbine in miniature: a compressor, a combustion chamber and a turbine. The compressor raises the pressure of incoming air. Fuel is mixed with that air and ignited in the combustion chamber. Expanding exhaust gases drive the turbine and leave the engine at high speed, producing thrust.

That combustion process gives a turbine its characteristic hot exhaust, sound and response. It also adds fuel handling, ignition and engine-operation procedures that do not exist in a battery-powered EDF. The exact hardware and operating sequence depend on the engine and aircraft manuals.

Why EDF is usually the easier first step

RC Airplane World describes EDF as a gateway to turbine models, while describing turbine jets as unsuitable for beginners. That is useful guidance, not a rule that every EDF is easy or that no novice can ever fly one. A fast EDF jet can still demand careful setup, a suitable runway and previous fixed-wing skill. Conversely, some trainer-oriented EDF packages include stabilization aids.

One cited example is the Habu STS, marketed with beginner-oriented stabilization. Such aids can help a pilot maintain control, but they do not remove the need to understand battery safety, center of gravity, control throws, landing approach and the aircraft’s manual. Judge the individual model, not only the word “EDF” on the box.

What lowers the EDF barrier

  • Electric power avoids carrying and managing turbine fuel during a flight.
  • The propulsion source is a removable battery, so preparation is generally organized around charging, inspecting and fitting the specified pack.
  • Many EDF models are sold as integrated systems, although the actual battery, connector and setup requirements remain model-specific.
  • Stabilization is available on some trainer-oriented models, but it is not a feature of every EDF jet.

What still makes an EDF demanding

  • EDF units draw high current. An incorrect battery, connector or wiring arrangement can damage equipment or create a safety hazard.
  • Jet airframes can be less forgiving than a slow trainer, particularly during takeoff and landing.
  • The fan’s result depends on clean intake airflow and properly shaped ducting, not just the motor’s advertised rating.
  • A battery that fits physically may still have the wrong cell count, voltage or discharge capability.

Why pilots choose a turbine despite the extra demands

A turbine appeals to pilots who want the operation, sound and physical impression of a combustion jet. The retailer source describes turbine sound and feel as more realistic than an EDF’s, and identifies model size, noise and required experience as important factors. Those are qualitative preferences, not measured performance claims.

The trade-off is a more involved power system. A turbine aircraft requires an engine and fuel arrangement specified for that installation, plus the procedures and safety practices in the engine and airframe manuals. The sources characterize turbine models as more costly and demanding and recommend substantial experience. They do not establish a universal purchase price or recurring operating cost.

A turbine makes sense when all of these are true

  • You already have a reliable record with the type of RC aircraft you plan to fly.
  • You want combustion-engine sound and feel more than the convenience of battery power.
  • You are prepared to learn and follow the engine’s starting, fueling, shutdown and inspection procedures.
  • Your flying site, club rules and local requirements accommodate the aircraft’s size, noise and fuel operation.
  • You can obtain instruction from an experienced turbine pilot before attempting an independent flight.

Battery and power-system decisions for an EDF

The battery is not an accessory added after choosing an EDF; it is part of the propulsion design. The cited RC reference notes that EDFs draw high current and generally use high-capacity, high-discharge LiPo packs.

Check these specifications against the exact manual

  • Cell count and voltage: use the value specified for the motor, electronic speed controller and aircraft.
  • Discharge capability: select a pack whose discharge rating is appropriate for the system’s current demand.
  • Capacity and dimensions: the pack must fit the battery bay without shifting the aircraft’s balance or obstructing cooling.
  • Connector: match the aircraft’s connector and confirm that its current capability is suitable.
  • Mass: a heavier pack changes loading and center of gravity even if it provides longer potential endurance.

Do not choose by a generic “EDF battery” label alone. Verify cell count, voltage, connector, dimensions and discharge needs in the current aircraft and power-system documentation. If the manual specifies a particular battery range, stay within that range rather than extrapolating from another model.

Preflight battery checks

  1. Inspect the pack for swelling, torn insulation, damaged leads or a loose connector.
  2. Confirm the pack’s cell count and charge state with the equipment recommended by the manufacturer.
  3. Secure the battery so it cannot move during acceleration, braking or abrupt maneuvers.
  4. Check that wiring is clear of the fan, sharp edges and hot components.
  5. After a flight, allow the pack to cool as directed by its documentation before charging or storing it.

Installation can change the advertised result

EDF performance is not determined on a bench alone. An EDF supplier, Efflux RC, cautions that its bench-test thrust data may be 5–10% lower once an EDF is installed in an airframe, with different results caused by airframe ducting losses. That is the supplier’s own warning, not an independently verified rule for every EDF.

Intake shape, transitions, seals, thrust-tube geometry and the relationship between the fan and the airframe can all affect how efficiently air reaches and leaves the impeller. A restrictive or poorly aligned duct can reduce the thrust available in the finished model. This is why a motor or fan figure copied from a test stand should not be treated as the aircraft’s flight performance.

How to make a fair EDF comparison

  1. Identify the complete aircraft, including its installed fan, motor, controller and battery.
  2. Record the stated test conditions: battery, voltage, current, measurement method and whether the figure is bench or installed thrust.
  3. Check whether the aircraft uses the manufacturer’s recommended ducting and thrust tube.
  4. Compare aircraft mass and wing loading, not only static thrust.
  5. Use the same measurement conventions when comparing two configurations.

Why “EDF versus turbine speed” has no simple answer

The reviewed pages do not contain a matched test of equivalent EDF and turbine aircraft. They therefore cannot support a blanket statement that one propulsion category is faster, climbs better or produces more thrust.

Even within one category, aircraft differ in mass, wing, inlet design, exhaust geometry, gearing or engine installation. A light EDF airframe and a heavy turbine airframe are not a meaningful category comparison. Nor is a bench thrust number directly interchangeable with a flight-speed claim.

Questions to ask when a specification looks impressive

  • Is the number static thrust, installed thrust or a flight measurement?
  • What battery voltage, current and state of charge were used for an EDF?
  • Was the turbine tested at the same atmospheric and installation conditions?
  • Are the aircraft masses and aerodynamic designs comparable?
  • Is the figure from a manufacturer, a supplier or an independent test?

If those details are missing, treat the figure as a model-specific indication rather than proof of a category-wide advantage.

Skill, stabilization and training

Propulsion choice should follow the pilot’s skills and the aircraft’s behavior. An EDF label does not guarantee trainer handling, and a turbine label does not describe every airframe’s difficulty. Look for the exact model’s recommended experience level, stabilization modes, landing speed, runway requirements and control setup.

For a pilot moving from propeller aircraft to EDF

  1. Choose a model whose manual explicitly matches your experience, rather than selecting solely by appearance or fan size.
  2. Learn the stabilization modes and what happens if stabilization is disabled or loses a sensor reference.
  3. Practice power management and landing approaches in a simulator or with an instructor if available.
  4. Have an experienced pilot inspect the center of gravity, control directions, throws and failsafe before the first flight.
  5. Use a runway and launch method appropriate to the aircraft; do not assume a hand launch is suitable.

For a pilot moving from EDF to turbine

  1. Get hands-on instruction with the specific engine type and its control system.
  2. Study the fuel, ignition, starting, shutdown and inspection procedures in the engine manual.
  3. Confirm that your club or flying site permits the aircraft’s noise, size and fuel operation.
  4. Perform a supervised ground run before attempting a flight.
  5. Plan for an engine-out or abnormal-start procedure before the model leaves the runway.

The reviewed sources recommend substantial experience for turbine operation. Treat that as a reason to seek instruction, not as a substitute for the manufacturer’s procedures.

Noise, realism and the flying-site question

Turbine sound is often the decisive emotional factor. The retailer source describes turbine sound and feel as closer to a full-size jet, while noting that EDFs can imitate a turbine-like sound. “More realistic” here means a subjective experience, not a measured decibel or fidelity score.

Noise is also a practical constraint. A site may have operating hours, sound limits or club rules that affect whether a turbine is usable. Before buying, ask the site manager or club for its current requirements. The same check is sensible for a large EDF, because airframe size and fan noise can still matter even without combustion.

Cost and ownership: what can and cannot be concluded

The references consistently frame EDF as the more affordable entry route and turbine as the more expensive option. They do not provide matched purchase prices, fuel costs, battery costs, maintenance totals or regional figures. Treat any exact budget found elsewhere as dependent on the named aircraft, engine, battery, radio equipment, charger, support hardware and local prices.

  • Turbine: aircraft, turbine engine, fuel-system components, control hardware, fuel and model-specific support equipment.
  • Both: transmitter and receiver, tools, transport, field equipment, repairs and any club or site fees.

Do not compare an EDF airframe price with a turbine engine price and call the difference an ownership cost. Build a list for the complete installed configuration and state the region and date of every price.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: treating every EDF as a trainer

Fix: read the exact model’s skill recommendation and handling guidance. Stabilization can help, but it does not change the aircraft’s energy, landing or setup requirements.

Mistake: buying a battery by capacity alone

Fix: verify cell count, voltage, discharge rating, connector, dimensions and mass against the manual.

Mistake: using bench thrust as guaranteed flight thrust

Fix: check whether the figure is installed and account for ducting. Efflux RC’s 5–10% caution illustrates why a bench result can fall after installation, but it is not a universal correction factor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: declaring a propulsion winner from one model

Fix: compare complete aircraft with stated measurement conditions. The available sources do not establish a universal speed, thrust, flight-time or operating-cost ranking.

Mistake: choosing a turbine for the sound without planning the operation

Fix: confirm experience, instruction, site permission, noise limits, fuel procedures and engine support before purchase.

A practical decision path

  1. Define the experience you want. If battery convenience and a lower entry barrier matter most, start by evaluating EDF models. If combustion sound and turbine operation are the primary goal, continue only if you can meet the experience and site requirements.
  2. Choose the aircraft before choosing replacement parts. The airframe determines the fan size, battery bay, connector, center of gravity and duct geometry.
  3. Read the current manuals. Confirm the recommended power system, battery, fuel arrangement, control setup and safety procedures.
  4. Check your flying site. Ask about noise, runway, aircraft size, fuel and operating hours.
  5. Plan instruction. Use an experienced EDF pilot for a demanding jet and a turbine pilot for turbine-specific training.
  6. Compare installed configurations. Record mass, power source and measurement conditions instead of relying on category claims.
  7. Buy only after the support plan is clear. Know which battery or fuel components are approved, how damaged parts will be replaced and who can help diagnose the system.

Bottom-line choice

Choose an EDF when you want the more accessible route into RC jets, can manage a high-current LiPo system, and prefer rechargeable electric operation. Choose a model gas turbine when you have substantial RC experience, a suitable flying site and a genuine preference for combustion sound and feel, along with the willingness to learn more demanding procedures.

Neither choice wins every performance contest. The responsible comparison is always model-specific: identify the aircraft, installed propulsion, battery or fuel configuration, mass, ducting and measurement method. That is the information needed to decide whether a particular RC jet is right for you.
