If your Echo will not enter setup mode, first identify its exact model, then restart it and use the reset procedure Amazon documents for that model. The Action-button reset works only on certain Echo and Echo Dot generations; factory reset is a different, more destructive procedure. If the documented buttons do not respond, do not keep guessing at combinations.
Start with the model and basic setup checks
Button instructions vary across Echo speakers, Echo Dot generations, and screen devices. Find your device in Amazon’s Echo setup guide before pressing reset controls. If you are unsure which device you own, use the model-identification link on that page.

- Check that the Echo has a strong internet connection.
- If setup uses the Alexa app, make sure the app is up to date.
- Unplug the Echo, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. This is Amazon’s general setup troubleshooting restart; follow the specific model page if it gives different timing.
Amazon lists these checks in its Echo setup troubleshooting guidance. If the device still will not set up, use only the matching reset steps below.

Choose the reset for your Echo model

Know what the reset will erase
For the Echo (3rd/4th generation) and Echo Dot (2nd–5th generations) listed above, the Action-button reset is the option that retains smart-home connections. The factory-reset combinations are separate: Amazon says they erase personal information and device and smart-home connections. On the 1st-generation Echo Dot, a brief press of the recessed Reset button preserves smart-home connections, while holding it for 8 seconds performs a factory reset.

Use a factory reset only if you intend to remove the device’s stored information and connections. If you are trying to recover setup mode, begin with the connection-preserving reset for your exact model.

If the button does not respond or the device never enters setup mode after the correct model-specific steps, the general instructions do not establish a universal fix for a physically unresponsive control. Avoid repeating resets or trying combinations meant for another generation. Return to Amazon’s model-specific setup and support route for the device you identified.
