You don’t need vinegar to make a homemade rocket. For the easiest activity, roll paper into a small rocket and launch it by blowing through a straw. A balloon rocket is another simple, chemical-free way to show propulsion. For a pop launch, NASA and the Canadian Space Agency describe a water-and-effervescent-tablet activity that requires goggles and careful adult supervision.
Choose the rocket experiment that fits your setup
| Activity | Materials and launch | Age or time guidance from the publisher | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper straw rocket | Paper, tape, scissors, pencil, straw and a measuring tool; launch by blowing through the straw. | NASA JPL: grades 4–8, under 30 minutes. | Easy construction, measuring distance and changing a design feature. |
| Balloon rocket | Balloon, straw, tape and taut line; release balloon air to propel it along the line. | Smithsonian: ages 9+, 20 minutes; its design challenge is for ages 6+, 20–30 minutes. | Seeing how the direction of escaping air relates to the rocket’s motion. |
| Effervescent-tablet rocket | Water, part of an effervescent antacid tablet and a paper rocket attached to a 35-mm film canister with a lid that fits inside its rim. | No age or duration guidance stated in the cited NASA Space Place and Canadian Space Agency instructions. | A more dramatic pop launch, with extra precautions because pressure builds in the canister. |
These ages and durations are the publishers’ estimates, not guarantees that an activity is suitable for every child. The straw and balloon rockets use air for propulsion and need no vinegar or chemical reaction. NASA JPL’s paper straw rocket activity is the most straightforward place to start.

Make a paper straw rocket
Gather the materials
- Paper and a pencil
- Scissors and tape
- A plastic or reusable straw
- A meter stick or measuring tape
- NASA JPL’s optional template and data log
Build and launch
- Wrap a rectangle of paper around a pencil to form a tube. Tape it so it holds its shape, then slide it off the pencil.
- Make two fin units and attach them to the paper tube. Bend the fins at right angles, following the template if you are using it.
- Pinch and twist one end of the tube to form the nose, then tape it closed.
- Slide the rocket onto the straw. Point it into a clear launch area, away from people and hazards, and blow through the straw.
- Measure how far it travels and record the result.
NASA JPL says its completed template rocket is about 13 cm (about 5 inches) tall; that is the size of this template, not a proven ideal size for every rocket.

Turn launches into a design challenge
After a first launch, change one feature at a time—such as the rocket’s length, fin shape, fin size or fin angle. Keep the launch setup consistent, measure each flight and note what changed. This makes it easier to compare designs without treating one launch as proof that a change always works better.

Make a balloon rocket to demonstrate propulsion
Materials and setup
NASA JPL’s balloon rocket lesson calls for a plastic milkshake straw, long party balloon, clear tape and nylon monofilament fishing line. Thread the line through the straw and secure it taut between supports.
Launch and observe
- Inflate the balloon without tying it; pinch the opening shut to hold the air in.
- Tape the balloon to the straw with its opening facing along the line.
- Move people and fragile objects out of the path, then release the balloon opening.
- Observe which way the balloon travels and which way the air escapes. Repeat, or reverse the balloon opening as a controlled variation.
NASA JPL’s stated principle is: “The balloon will travel in the opposite direction from which the air escaped.” Ask children to predict the direction before each launch, then record what happens.

Try a water-and-tablet pop launch only with added precautions
NASA Space Place and the Canadian Space Agency both describe attaching a paper rocket to a 35-mm film canister, adding water and part of an effervescent antacid tablet, then closing the canister. Their instructions do not use vinegar. The canister lid must fit inside its rim; NASA says that fit is required, and the Canadian agency says it gives better results.
Follow the published quantities and safety directions
- NASA Space Place and the Canadian Space Agency each specify filling the canister one-third full with water and using half a tablet.
- Both sources call for eye protection. The Canadian Space Agency also says to stand back at least 2 metres and not point the rocket at anyone.
- Do the messy activity outdoors or prepare paper towel, as the Canadian agency recommends. Keep children under appropriate adult supervision.
The NASA Space Place pop rocket instructions were last updated in 2014; the Canadian Space Agency activity was modified in 2016. Neither page establishes a typical launch height or other performance result.

Why it pops—and where to stop
The Canadian Space Agency explains that the tablet reacting with water releases carbon dioxide in the enclosed canister. Pressure builds until it pushes off the lid and launches the rocket. NASA Space Place describes gas pushing on the canister and the expelled material pushing the rocket in the opposite direction. Use only the documented low-complexity activity: do not improvise a pressure vessel or add fuels or other substances.

How to compare launches fairly
- Pick a consistent measure: distance for the straw rocket, or direction and travel along the line for the balloon rocket.
- Keep the launch location and setup as similar as practical between attempts.
- Change one design feature at a time and record the change and result.
- Describe what you observed rather than claiming a design will always launch farther or higher; the cited activities do not provide a typical height or comparative-distance result.
