The basic transaction follows four stages:
- A visitor selects a downloadable product.
- EDD presents a cart and checkout.
- A configured payment method records the order.
- The buyer receives a protected download link by the store’s delivery process.
EDD also provides customer records, order history, reports, discount codes, email receipts, refund management, multi-currency selling, and controls for limiting or expiring downloads. Those features make it more than a file-upload tool: it is an operating system for a digital catalog.
Decide whether EDD fits your store

Evaluate alternatives against the same practical questions rather than against a feature-count checklist:
- Product type: Are your products files, memberships, courses, licenses, or a mixture that includes physical fulfillment?
- Checkout and payment coverage: Do the payment methods available for your country and customer base meet your requirements?
- Delivery controls: Do you need expiring links, download limits, or protection against casually sharing file URLs?
- Recurring revenue: Will subscriptions be central to the business, or is one-time purchase enough?
- Licensing: Does software need activatable keys, update delivery, or entitlement checks?
- Tax and compliance: Which tax rules, invoices, and records apply to your customers and locations?
- Operations: How much customer support, reporting, discounting, and refund handling will staff perform in WordPress?
- Extension economics: Will the required add-ons and their renewals remain sensible as your catalog grows?
Feature availability changes by version and plan. Confirm the current feature list and compatibility before committing to a launch architecture.

Prepare WordPress before installing EDD
Use an up-to-date WordPress installation, a theme that displays the checkout correctly, and a reliable backup process. Decide in advance:
- Where downloadable files will be stored and who can administer them.
- Which currency and tax rules apply to each selling region.
- Which payment accounts you will connect and who will receive transaction notifications.
- What your refund, support, and download-replacement policies will be.
- Whether products are one-time purchases, recurring subscriptions, or software licenses.
- How product files will be versioned so a replacement does not accidentally break an existing customer’s entitlement.
Do not upload confidential source material into a public media location and assume a hidden filename is protection. Use EDD’s secure-delivery controls and test a buyer’s access from a separate account before publishing.
Install and configure Easy Digital Downloads

- Install and activate the plugin. In WordPress, add Easy Digital Downloads, activate it, and open its onboarding or setup flow.
- Set the store identity and currency. Enter the store details requested by the wizard and choose the currency in which prices and order records should be displayed.
- Configure taxes. Define the tax behavior required for the jurisdictions where you sell. If you sell across borders, document which customer information is used to determine the applicable rate.
- Connect payment methods. Configure the gateways your customers can use, such as Stripe or PayPal where available for your region and account. Complete each provider’s account verification and webhook or callback requirements.
- Review checkout settings. Check the checkout page, cart behavior, required customer fields, purchase confirmation, and error messages. EDD supports cart and checkout blocks, so verify that the blocks render correctly in your chosen theme.
- Configure email receipts. Set the sender identity, receipt content, and order-notification recipients. Send a test message and confirm that links, branding, and support instructions are readable.
- Save store settings and run a test order. Use a payment provider’s test mode where available, then verify the complete path: checkout, payment status, receipt, download access, and the order record.
Keep a written record of the settings that affect tax, payment status, and delivery. It makes troubleshooting and future migrations much easier.

Create a downloadable product
EDD’s product workflow is intentionally simple: create the item, set a price, attach one or more files, and publish it.
- Create a new download product. Give it a customer-facing name that distinguishes editions or file formats.
- Write the product description. State what the buyer receives, compatible software or devices, file formats, update policy, and support limits. Avoid promising features that are not in the delivered file.
- Set the price. Choose the one-time price or the pricing structure supplied by the extension you intend to use for recurring access. Make currency and tax treatment clear at checkout.
- Attach the downloadable file or files. Use descriptive filenames and separate major editions when buyers need to choose between them.
- Configure delivery restrictions. Apply download limits or expiration behavior when appropriate. Confirm that a customer can download the purchase while an unauthenticated visitor cannot.
- Publish and inspect the product page. Test mobile and desktop layouts, the add-to-cart action, checkout handoff, and the post-purchase receipt.
For updates, decide whether existing buyers should receive a replacement file, a new version, or an additional download. Communicate that policy on the product page and in the receipt so support requests do not become entitlement disputes.
Payments, checkout, taxes, and receipts
EDD lists payment processing through methods such as Stripe and PayPal, along with checkout blocks, email receipts, refunds, and multi-currency selling. Availability depends on the gateway, your location, and the current EDD integration.
Payment testing
- Use test credentials or sandbox mode before accepting live money.
- Confirm successful, failed, canceled, and refunded transactions.
- Check that the WordPress order status changes correctly after the gateway response.
- Verify that a failed payment does not grant a valid download entitlement.
- Switch deliberately to live credentials only after the test results are recorded.
Tax and invoice planning
Tax configuration is a business and legal responsibility, not merely a checkout preference. Record the regions in which you are registered, the evidence you collect about a customer’s location, and how refunds alter tax records. If you need formal PDF invoices or specialized EU VAT handling, treat those as extension requirements and verify current compatibility before launch.

Protect files and control access
EDD generates secure download links and supports controls such as expiration times and download limits. Use these controls to make casual URL sharing less useful, but do not describe them as a substitute for broader content security.
- Keep the original files in the location and access model supported by your installation.
- Set a limit that accommodates ordinary buyers without leaving a link indefinitely open.
- Use expiration behavior for products where short-lived access is appropriate.
- Test a link after signing out, in a private browser window, and after the permitted limit is reached.
- When replacing a file, verify whether prior links still point to the intended version.
Support staff should be able to resend or correct a legitimate purchase without manually emailing an unprotected file. Use the customer and order records for that workflow.
Run the store after launch
EDD’s operational features cover the recurring work of a digital shop:
- Customer management: Find a buyer’s record and review associated purchases.
- Order history: Check payment state, purchased files, refunds, and delivery-related details.
- Reports: Review store performance using the reports available in your version and plan.
- Discount codes: Create campaigns with clear eligibility and expiration rules, then test the code at checkout.
- Email receipts: Keep transactional messages accurate when a file, price, or support process changes.
- Refund management: Record the refund and confirm how it affects access to the purchased download.
Schedule routine backups, plugin and WordPress updates, payment-connection checks, and test purchases. A digital store can continue taking orders while delivery is broken, so monitor both payment success and actual file access.
When you need Pro plans or extensions

Do not select an extension solely because its name matches a business idea. Map the full customer journey first, then confirm that every required step is covered by the same version, plan, gateway, and renewal period.

A general-purpose ecommerce plugin can be sensible when physical shipping, inventory, or mixed carts are central. EDD’s differentiator is the digital-download-first workflow: protected file delivery, download entitlements, and records centered on digital purchases.

- Catalog size and expected support workload.
- Extension prices, renewals, updates, and maintenance responsibility.
Then run the same test order in each candidate system. The winner is the one that delivers a paid file reliably while preserving the records and controls your business actually needs.
Launch checklist
- WordPress, theme, EDD, and extensions are compatible and backed up.
- Currency, tax behavior, checkout fields, and receipt language are approved.
- Payment accounts are verified and tested in both success and failure paths.
- Every product has a clear description, price, file, support policy, and update policy.
- Protected links cannot be used anonymously after the intended limit or expiration.
- Customer, order, refund, report, and discount workflows have assigned owners.
- Any subscription, licensing, invoice, VAT, restriction, marketplace, or recovery requirement has a confirmed extension and renewal plan.
- A real low-value purchase has been completed from a separate customer account before launch.
Common problems and fixes
The customer paid but received no usable file
Check the order status, receipt delivery, file attachment, and download permissions in that order. If payment is recorded but the link is absent, inspect the email configuration and product’s attached file before issuing a manual replacement.
A test payment succeeds but the order remains pending
Confirm that the gateway credentials, callback or webhook configuration, and site connectivity match the provider’s current requirements. Repeat the test with provider logs available and do not grant access manually until the payment state is trustworthy.
A download link is too restrictive
Review the expiration and download-limit settings against the customer’s real devices and connection conditions. Increase the allowance only as far as your delivery policy permits, then test a new purchase.
A discount code behaves unexpectedly
Check its eligibility, expiration, product scope, and interaction with taxes or other discounts. Test both an eligible and ineligible cart so the error message is understandable.
An extension appears to remove a needed feature
Compare the installed EDD, WordPress, gateway, and extension versions with the current compatibility notes. Plan updates in a staging copy and keep a rollback backup before changing payment or licensing components.
