Neither is universally easier. If you want case-based control without a display, a tactile dial is another option. Many earbuds combine case and earbud controls, so the practical choice is often which one you expect to use most.
How the three control styles differ
| Control style | Where it helps most | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Touchscreen case | Choosing settings or checking information while the case is in hand or nearby. JBL says the Tour Pro 3 case displays playback and caller information and offers case-based controls and customization (JBL). | You need to retrieve and navigate the case. The screen’s visible menus can make options easier to find, but do not guarantee a faster response. |
| On-earbud touch controls | Quick actions while the earbuds are worn and the case is stored, such as play/pause or track skipping. | You need to remember the gesture mapping and touch the earbud; that may disturb its fit for some people. |
| Tactile case dial | Adjusting controls from a reachable case without looking at a display. SoundGuys describes the CMF Buds Pro 2 Smart Dial as usable from a pocket without looking (SoundGuys). | The case still needs to be accessible, and available actions differ by model. |
These are practical differences, not a measured ranking of which design is easiest for most people. The cited sources do not establish comparative task-completion times, error rates or representative user preferences.

When a screen case is the easier choice
Choose a screen case if you often want to change settings from the case itself and prefer seeing options rather than remembering gestures. JBL describes the Tour Pro 3’s 1.57-inch touchscreen Smart Charging Case as providing playback and caller information, listening controls, settings and customization through the Headphones app (JBL Tour Pro 3). What Hi-Fi? says its screen reaches most JBL app features, including ANC, call settings and Find My Buds (What Hi-Fi?).
That is most useful when the case is already in your hand or on a table. It is less compelling for a quick adjustment if the case is buried in a bag. In its Tour Pro 3 review, What Hi-Fi? found the screen occasionally finicky and slow to respond; that is a reviewer observation about this model, not evidence that every screen case behaves the same way.

A screen case can do more than control the earbuds
The Tour Pro 3 case can also transmit audio from AUX or USB-C sources, according to JBL. That may matter to travelers using wired inflight entertainment, independently of whether they find touchscreen navigation easier.
When on-earbud touch controls are easier
Touch controls suit frequent, simple actions when you are already wearing the earbuds and do not want to take out the case. On the Tour Pro 3, SoundGuys lists a single tap for ANC mode on the left bud and play/pause on the right; double taps for TalkThru on the left and next track on the right; a triple tap for previous track on the right; and a long press for the voice assistant on either side (SoundGuys review).

- [Bluetooth 5.4] Advanced Bluetooth 5.4 technology ensures improved speed, efficiency, stability, and audio quality than Bluetooth 5.3. Supporting SBC, AAC audio codec, and A2DP, AVRCP, HFP, and HSP for better listening quality
- [EQ Modes] Powerful bass with 13mm dynamic driver and unique mids-highs deliver impressive stereo sound. Comes with 5 adjustable EQ modes (Standard, Classic, Jazz, Rock, Popular) to suit different music styles
- [12 Hours Playback Time] Single charge lasts 6-8 hours, charging case extends it to 12 hours. The case fully charges in 1.5 hours and shows the power levels of both earbuds and the case in real-time
- [Multi-Function Touch Screen] Full-color LCD screen on the charging case. Controls include music playback, call handling, noise canceling and transparency, volume adjustment, camera control, language switching, wallpaper customization, screen brightness adjustment, headphone search, flashlight, and timer
- [Comfortable to Wear] Ergonomic design ensures stability and comfort for long-term wear, making them ideal for various activities
Those mappings can be customized in the app and may vary with configuration or firmware, so check the current setup instructions for the earbuds you buy. A gesture can be quick once learned, but it is not inherently eyes-free if you have to recall which bud or tap pattern performs the action you want.
Consider fit and handling
SoundGuys notes that tapping or swiping can disturb an earbud’s seal for some users, while acknowledging exceptions. Treat this as a possible handling annoyance, not a guaranteed problem or a measured failure rate. If you often adjust earbuds after touching them, a case-based control may be more comfortable for frequent changes.

When a tactile case dial may be a better fit
A physical dial offers case-based access without asking you to navigate a screen. SoundGuys describes the CMF Buds Pro 2 Smart Dial as controlling volume, track changes and noise-cancellation modes, and reports that it can be used from a pocket without looking (SoundGuys). That makes it worth considering if you want tactile feedback but prefer not to touch the earbuds. The reported pocket use is the author’s impression, not a population-wide usability result.
How to choose for your routine
- List the actions you do most. For frequent pause and skip commands while walking, prioritize controls available on the worn earbuds. For settings, status or call-related options, look for a case screen that explicitly supports those actions.
- Think about where the case will be. If it is usually packed away, a case display or dial will not help much for a quick change. If you keep it on a desk or in a pocket, case controls may be easy to reach.
- Decide whether you prefer visual or tactile cues. A screen shows menus; a dial provides physical feedback; earbud taps rely on learning the mapping and often an audio response.
- Check the actual model’s controls and customization. Products differ, and assignments may be adjustable. Confirm which actions are available from the case, from each bud and through the companion app before buying.
- Try the handling if possible. Check whether operating the buds affects their fit and whether the case controls are comfortable to use. No control style is automatically more accessible for every user.
What the examples do—and do not—prove
The JBL Tour Pro 3 illustrates a screen case paired with configurable earbud touch controls; it is not a choice between mutually exclusive device categories. JBL’s US product page lists up to 11 hours of playback with ANC off or 8 hours with ANC on, plus three additional full charges in the case, under its stated conditions. Those are manufacturer claims (JBL). SoundGuys measured 8 hours 17 minutes with ANC on under its standardized test conditions, while What Hi-Fi? lists 7 hours with ANC on and 11 hours off in its review (SoundGuys; What Hi-Fi?). These figures come from different sources and conditions, so they are not directly comparable measurements of control convenience or battery performance across models.

SoundGuys also displayed a poll with 70 votes: 20% said yes, 37% no, 27% preferred physical case controls and 16% were unsure. Because it was a small, self-selected poll, it should not be treated as a representative measure of what earbud buyers prefer (SoundGuys).
