In EA SPORTS FC 26, a formation sets your team’s starting shape; team tactics and player roles or instructions determine how that shape behaves. To build a tactic that suits your squad, choose a formation for the spaces you want to occupy, set a build-up style and defensive approach that support your intended play, then assign roles and focuses that fit your players. There is no universally best setup: the right choice depends on your players, preferred patterns, and game mode.
What a custom tactic controls
A custom tactic brings together three connected choices: the team’s formation, its team-wide tactical settings, and the responsibilities assigned to individual players. They work as a system. Changing one part can affect whether the others make sense: for instance, sending several players forward may create attacking options but leave fewer players protecting against a counter.

- Formation: where players are positioned when the team takes shape.
- Team settings: how the side is intended to build attacks and defend as a unit.
- Roles and focuses or instructions: the kinds of movement and responsibilities expected from particular players.
A formation is a starting arrangement, not a complete description of what happens during a match. A team using the same formation can feel very different depending on its build-up, defensive settings, and player assignments. Judge a tactic by the spaces and options it creates, not just the formation printed beside it.

How to choose a formation
Start with the players you want on the pitch and the shape you want to create. Formations distribute players across defensive, midfield, and attacking lines, but they do not guarantee that a player will remain in one spot throughout play. Roles and team settings influence how the team behaves around that initial structure.
Choose the shape for the spaces you want
- If you want several central passing options, consider a shape with multiple midfield positions. Think about whether those players can also cover the wide areas when possession is lost.
- If you want to attack through wide areas, select a shape and assignments that can provide width. Check that advancing wide players will not leave the rest of the team exposed.
- If you prefer a narrow attack, consider how the forwards and midfielders can combine centrally, and whether the team still has a way to progress when the middle is crowded.
- If you want two forwards, decide what each should contribute: for example, whether both should threaten space or whether one should offer a different kind of link. Assignments should reflect that distinction and the players available.
These are selection questions, not a ranking of formations. The official material cited here does not establish that one formation produces better results than another. A theoretically attractive shape may be a poor fit if your squad lacks suitable players for its key responsibilities.
Check the shape in and out of possession
When choosing a formation, consider both what you want when you have the ball and what you need when you lose it. A player who advances to support an attack may leave space behind; a teammate may need to hold position or cover that area. Likewise, a compact central setup may offer close passing options but require a plan for progressing when opponents block the middle.
Before changing formation to solve a problem, identify the problem precisely. Is a passing lane missing, is a player isolated, or is the team vulnerable after losing the ball? A role or team-setting change may address the issue without requiring a different starting shape.
Set the team-wide build-up and defensive approach
Build-up style and defensive approach set broad expectations for the team. Treat them as complementary choices: one concerns how you intend to move the ball forward, while the other concerns the team’s defensive behaviour. The available choices and exact labels are displayed in-game and may depend on the mode or game build.
Choose build-up for your intended attack
Decide how you want to progress possession, then check whether your formation and roles provide the necessary options. An approach that relies on forward movement needs players capable of receiving or exploiting that movement. A plan based on keeping the ball needs enough useful passing connections so that possession does not become aimless circulation. These are practical fit checks, not guarantees that a particular setting will produce a particular result.

Choose a defensive approach with its costs in mind
Consider the team’s spacing and the positions it must protect. A defensive approach should fit the shape you want without undermining the attack you are building. If your chosen structure leaves too few players able to cover an area, review the roles and assignments there before assuming the formation itself is the only cause.

If you alter both team settings and several roles together, it becomes harder to tell which change affected the spaces you see. Look for a concrete difference—such as a more available passing option or better cover in a particular area—rather than treating a short run of results as proof that a tactic is objectively superior.
Understand FC 26 roles, focuses, and instructions
Roles and focuses describe how players contribute within the team’s tactical plan: their responsibilities and the kinds of movement they are asked to make. They help turn a formation into a functioning pattern. A role is not merely a position label, and a player’s behaviour should not be inferred from position alone.
EA says FC 26 adds roles and focuses, including Ball-Playing Keeper, Wide Back, Inverted Wingback, and Box Crasher. It also says players are less constrained by assigned roles and can contribute beyond them, and that a Versatile focus was added. That flexibility does not mean every player will perform every task equally well; build assignments around the players and the pattern you want. See EA’s FC 26 Gameplay Deep Dive for the version-specific description.
Assign roles to solve a team problem
Think about responsibilities across the unit rather than setting each player in isolation. If one player is expected to advance, ask who will help maintain cover. If several players are set to attack space, ask who remains available to connect the play. If a role pulls someone away from a usual area, check whether another player can occupy or protect it.

Use a role or focus because it supports a specific intention—not because the name sounds strong. A role that makes sense in one formation or with one squad may not fit another. Player attributes, the surrounding assignments, and your game mode all affect whether the plan is workable.

Roles versus player instructions
Players often use “instructions” broadly to mean individual tactical settings. In FC 26, think of the individual assignment as the player-level part of the tactic: it shapes a player’s responsibilities and movement in relation to the team plan. Use the labels available in the relevant mode rather than assuming that a familiar label or option from another edition appears unchanged.
When an individual assignment seems to conflict with the team’s intended shape, reassess the whole unit. For example, multiple players moving into the same space can reduce the number of useful passing options, while too many players leaving their positions may weaken defensive cover. The goal is not to give every player the most aggressive assignment; it is to make their responsibilities work together.
A practical setup process
Menu paths are not confirmed for every platform, mode, or game build, so use the current in-game tactic and squad screens rather than relying on a universal button-by-button route. The following sequence works as a decision process regardless of minor menu differences.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Pick the mode and squad. Choose the team and mode you intend to play. Career Mode has its own Tactical Vision requirements; those rules do not automatically apply to every other mode.
- Choose a formation. Select a starting shape that accommodates the players you want to use and the areas you want to attack or protect.
- Set build-up and defence. Choose the team-wide settings that support your intended way of progressing the ball and defending.
- Assign roles and focuses. Give players responsibilities that complement one another. Check who advances, who connects the play, and who provides cover.
- Inspect the whole structure. Look for duplicated responsibilities, unoccupied areas, and players who may be isolated. Consider what the shape offers both in possession and after a turnover.
- Try the tactic in your intended mode. Observe whether the patterns you wanted are appearing. Adjust one part at a time so you can connect a change to what you see.
- Save a version you can return to. EA says FC 26 supports saving and loading tactics codes across Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Kick-Off, Seasons, and Friendlies, with up to 10 saved codes. Menu wording can vary, so check the current in-game screens.
EA also states that FC 25 tactics codes are compatible with FC 26 and convert when applied: “FC 25 tactics codes are compatible with FC 26 and will be converted to the FC26 format when applied.” A converted code can be a starting point, but inspect its resulting settings and assignments rather than assuming it suits your squad or mode unchanged. This information appears in EA’s FC 26 Gameplay Deep Dive.
Worked example: Emre Yilmaz’s narrow diamond
EA FC Pro published a historical example of Emre Yilmaz’s narrow-diamond tactic on November 9, 2023. It is useful for seeing how settings and player assignments form a coherent idea, not as a tested FC 26 recommendation or proof of current competitive effectiveness. EA gives these settings:
| Part of the tactic | Yilmaz example |
|---|---|
| Defensive width | 40 |
| Depth | 71 |
| Build-up | Balanced |
| Chance creation | Direct passing |
| Attacking width | 1 |
| CDM | Stay back and cover center |
| One central midfielder | Stay back |
| CAM | Stay forward |
| Two strikers | Get in behind |
EA describes the compact attacking width as supporting close combinations and the depth as intended to support a high press. Read those numbers and assignments as parts of that particular tactic, not values to copy without context. Its narrow spacing, forward movement, and defensive cover choices express an identifiable plan: combine centrally and press high while retaining some protection behind the attack. Whether that plan fits your players, current version, and mode is a separate question.

Career Mode: Tactical Vision requirements
Career Mode has Tactical Vision rules that are specific to that mode. EA’s FC 26 Career Mode deep dive identifies remaining build-up requirements for Possession, Wing Play, and Counter Attack, and defensive approach requirements for Park The Bus, Kick & Rush, and High Pressing. The precise requirements depend on the selected vision; do not treat those names as universal instructions for Ultimate Team or other modes.
EA also says roles are no longer Tactical Vision requirements in Career Mode. Coaches familiar with a vision can boost Role Familiarity, but that is distinct from requiring particular roles to satisfy the vision. If a Career Mode tactic does not meet its vision conditions, check its build-up and defensive approach against the in-game requirements rather than changing roles on the assumption they are still mandatory. Details are in EA’s FC 26 Career Mode Deep Dive.
Choose a gameplay preset for the mode, not as a shortcut to a tactic
EA describes Competitive gameplay as tuned for head-to-head play, including Ultimate Team and Clubs, while Authentic is aimed at modes such as Career. These are gameplay presets with different intended contexts; neither makes a particular formation, role combination, or tactic universally best. Base your custom setup on the mode you are playing and the play pattern you want, rather than assuming a preset proves that a tactic will be effective. EA outlines the intended contexts on its FC 26 gameplay features page.
Diagnose a tactic that is not working as intended
Separate what you observe from what you assume caused it. A missed chance or a loss does not by itself prove that the tactic is wrong. Look for a recurring structural issue, then change the smallest relevant part.
- You cannot find a forward pass: Check whether the formation and player assignments provide a receiver in the area you want to use. Review spacing before changing several settings at once.
- Players crowd the same space: Compare their assignments and the team’s width. Consider whether one player should offer a different option rather than having several perform the same movement.
- The attack leaves you exposed: Identify which area becomes vulnerable and whether an advancing player has a teammate providing cover. Reconsider the assignments involved before rebuilding the entire tactic.
- Your intended pattern rarely appears: Check that the build-up setting, formation, and roles are pulling in the same direction, and that the players selected can carry out their responsibilities.
- A copied code feels unsuitable: Inspect the formation, team settings, and individual assignments after applying it. A compatible code can convert between versions without being tailored to your squad or preferred style.
- A Career Mode vision is not satisfied: Check that mode’s stated build-up and defensive requirements. Roles are not the remaining Tactical Vision requirements described by EA for FC 26 Career Mode.
Keep a saved version before making substantial changes if you want a reliable point of comparison. Evaluate whether the tactic creates the intended options in the mode you actually play; the cited official sources provide no published statistic establishing custom-tactic effectiveness or usage, so there is no evidence-based win-rate claim to apply.
How to compare two custom tactics
Compare setups on the same terms. A formation name alone hides important differences, and a setting that suits one squad may not translate to another. Use these axes to decide which one is a better fit for your own plan:
- Starting shape and spacing: Where are the players positioned, and which areas do you want to occupy?
- Team settings: How do build-up style and defensive approach support or constrain that shape?
- Roles and focuses: Which players advance, connect play, or provide cover, and do their responsibilities complement one another?
- Squad fit: Do your players suit the responsibilities the tactic asks of them?
- Mode and version: Is the setup intended for the mode and version you are playing, and does Career Mode impose a Tactical Vision requirement?
The useful outcome is not a universal ranking. It is an informed choice between patterns: which one gives your squad the options you want while preserving the responsibilities you need.
