E Ink Kaleido 3 is a color e-paper display technology announced by E Ink on April 7, 2022, for eReaders and eNote devices. E Ink says it combines a color filter array with its Carta black-and-white ink film, supports 4,096 colors and 16 grayscale levels, and delivers 30% higher color saturation than the previous Kaleido Plus generation. Those figures are the company’s claims, not independent test results.

How Kaleido 3 produces color

E Ink describes Kaleido 3 as a pairing of a color filter array (CFA) and E Ink Carta black-and-white ink film. The filter array enables color content while the underlying display technology provides grayscale rendering. E Ink’s announcement identifies the technology for eReaders and eNote devices that display colorful images and information.

Those qualities should not be inferred from the palette and saturation figures alone. E Ink’s April 7, 2022 announcement is the source for the specifications below.

What Kaleido 3 means for a device buyer

Kaleido 3 is a display technology, not the name of a standalone reader. E Ink’s announcement establishes intended uses and panel details, but does not identify a current Amazon retail model or confirm which consumer devices are available now. If a product listing says it uses Kaleido 3, check the manufacturer’s specification for the exact model rather than relying on the display family name alone.

For readers comparing color e-paper devices, the announcement provides a useful generation-level claim—higher color saturation than Kaleido Plus—but not enough to rank finished products. A device’s actual suitability depends on its own documented specifications and use case; the panel announcement alone does not establish how a particular model performs.
