You can use Amazon CloudWatch alarms to monitor e-commerce metrics and invoke an AWS Lambda function when an alarm changes state. In Node.js, the AWS SDK for JavaScript v3 can query or configure CloudWatch metrics and alarms; your Lambda can then interpret the alarm event and send an HTTP request to a webhook endpoint. The key dependency is your store or application: CloudWatch does not automatically know its sales, conversion, or inventory metrics. You must first publish or expose the relevant telemetry.
How the metrics-to-webhook flow works
The pattern has five distinct parts: get store or application telemetry into CloudWatch, define what counts as a breach, create an alarm, allow that alarm to invoke Lambda, and have the function send the webhook. AWS documents the CloudWatch and Lambda portions of this flow, but the way you collect commerce data and the webhook receiver’s contract depend on your platform and integration.

- Identify the data source. Decide how the store or application exposes order, conversion, inventory, or other metrics. Publish them to CloudWatch or otherwise make them available to a CloudWatch query. The integration is platform-specific.
- Choose the metric and alarm criteria. Specify the namespace, metric name, dimensions, statistic, evaluation period, threshold, and how missing data should be treated. These must correspond to telemetry your system actually provides.
- Create or update the alarm. Use the CloudWatch API, the AWS SDK for JavaScript v3, or another supported client. Configure the intended alarm action; creating an alarm does not by itself mean downstream actions are enabled.
- Authorize invocation. Add a Lambda resource-based permission that allows the CloudWatch alarm service principal to invoke the function, scoped to the relevant account and alarm where possible.
- Handle the event and send the webhook. Read the alarm identity and state from Lambda’s event, apply your integration logic, and make an HTTP request that conforms to the receiving service’s endpoint and authentication requirements.
How to query e-commerce metrics with the AWS API
CloudWatch provides metric APIs and supports alarm criteria based on ordinary metrics, metric math, Metrics Insights queries, and—in the current API reference—PromQL queries. Choose the form that fits your telemetry and the question the alert should answer. A query cannot recover a metric that was never published or otherwise made available to CloudWatch.

For example, an order-volume alert needs a defined metric, dimensions that distinguish the relevant store or segment, a statistic and evaluation period, and a threshold appropriate to the business. The metric name and dimensions are not universal e-commerce conventions; define them to match the data your application sends. For available criteria and parameters, see the CloudWatch API reference.

Creating a CloudWatch alarm with Node.js
AWS SDK for JavaScript v3 uses service clients and command objects. The CloudWatch package is @aws-sdk/client-cloudwatch; AWS’s examples construct a CloudWatchClient and send a PutMetricAlarmCommand. The example’s SDK call structure can be adapted to your metric and alarm, but its EC2 CPU metric, namespace, dimensions, and threshold are not e-commerce recommendations. See the AWS SDK for JavaScript v3 CloudWatch examples and the AWS SDK for JavaScript v3 developer guide for Node.js setup and usage.
When configuring an alarm, verify the action settings as well as its metric criteria. The AWS code example sets ActionsEnabled: false; an alarm with actions disabled will not use its configured action as expected. Select an appropriate statistic, period, threshold, evaluation behavior, and missing-data treatment for the metric’s meaning and publication pattern rather than copying sample values.

How to trigger Lambda from a CloudWatch alarm
CloudWatch can invoke Lambda as an alarm action when the alarm changes state. The Lambda function needs a resource-based policy allowing the CloudWatch alarm service principal to invoke it. AWS’s guide gives the principal as lambda.alarms.cloudwatch.amazonaws.com and shows restricting permission to an account and alarm ARN. Use your deployment’s actual region, account, function, and alarm identifiers, and keep the permission as narrow as practical. Follow the current AWS guide to invoking a Lambda function from an alarm for the supported permission setup.
The function receives a JSON alarm event containing alarm identity and state information. Treat it as a CloudWatch alarm event, not as a webhook request originating from the commerce platform. Your function must decide what the state means to the downstream system and construct the HTTP request that system expects.

Sending a webhook safely from Lambda
The webhook endpoint, payload schema, authentication method, timeout, and error handling are choices that must match the receiving service. The AWS alarm event does not define those details for a third-party endpoint. Before relying on the integration, confirm the receiver’s documentation and test the complete path with representative alarm-state events.
- Validate the event fields your code relies on and handle unexpected or incomplete payloads.
- Use the alarm identity and state to make downstream processing understandable and, where possible, idempotent. Do not assume each alarm transition or delivery will occur exactly once.
- Handle HTTP failures and timeouts deliberately. CloudWatch documents asynchronous alarm-triggered invocation and retries in certain delivery-failure cases; Lambda has its own asynchronous execution behavior. Neither fact guarantees that a third-party webhook will be retried successfully or processed exactly once.
- Protect credentials using an appropriate secret-management approach and avoid logging secrets or sensitive customer information.
Where multiple consumers need the alarm notification, an SNS action may fit better than direct Lambda invocation. CloudWatch supports SNS alarm actions as well as Lambda actions; choose according to the routing and fan-out your system needs, not on an assumption that one path is always faster or cheaper.

Polling metrics or using alarm actions
| Approach | How it works | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
Poll with GetMetricData |
Your application periodically asks CloudWatch for metric data and evaluates it. | You need application-controlled query timing or want to combine polling logic with other checks. |
| CloudWatch alarm action | CloudWatch evaluates configured criteria and invokes Lambda or another alarm action on a state change. | You want CloudWatch to own threshold evaluation and notify a downstream handler when the state changes. |
These approaches have different evaluation and request patterns. The right choice depends on the detection timing you need, metric cadence, alarm configuration, and current AWS pricing; do not infer a universal cost or speed advantage.

AWS says Lambda publishes standard metrics to CloudWatch automatically and sends metric data at one-minute intervals. That describes Lambda’s standard metrics, not the cadence of a commerce metric that your store publishes. Your own data source and metric configuration determine what can be observed and how quickly.

A newly created CloudWatch alarm initially enters INSUFFICIENT_DATA before evaluation determines its state. Account for that transition in notification logic so that initialization is not mistaken for a business threshold breach. See AWS’s documentation on CloudWatch alarm behavior.
Custom metrics and alarms can incur charges. Estimate expected metric and alarm usage and check current CloudWatch pricing before choosing a design. High-resolution custom metrics or alarms may be relevant when standard timing does not meet a detection requirement, but the appropriate configuration and cost must be checked for the actual workload.
