A page that looks static can still make network requests. The quickest way to check is to open Chrome DevTools, select Network, and reload the page. If DevTools was opened only after the page loaded, the capture may be incomplete—and a count that appears to show zero API requests may say more about when recording began than what the page actually did.
The title describes an observation, but no site name, browser version, request log, or specific API calls are available to verify here. The steps below explain how to capture and trace requests without assuming what happened on that particular storefront.

Why a page can appear to make no API requests
Browsers fetch more than API data. A page can request its HTML document, JavaScript, stylesheets, images, fonts, analytics, pixels, and app code. Some requests may be visible in the Network panel without being API calls; others may be easy to miss if recording began too late or the page did not trigger the behavior that loads them.

Its request total covers entries logged since DevTools opened, so opening DevTools after the page has loaded is not a reliable way to capture the initial load. Chrome’s extension documentation also notes that a DevTools window opened late can miss earlier requests. See Chrome DevTools Network features and the Chrome extensions webRequest documentation.

Capture a complete page load in Chrome
- Open DevTools before reloading. In Chrome, open DevTools, then select the Network panel. The panel must be open while the page loads to record that load’s requests.
- Reload the page. Use the browser’s reload control or the reload command. Watch the Network list populate as the browser fetches resources.
- Keep entries across navigation if needed. Enable Preserve log in the Network panel when you need to retain entries while navigating or reloading.
- Read the request list and status bar. Chrome’s panel can show name, status, type, initiator, size, time, and a waterfall. The status bar reports totals for the requests logged in the panel; it is not proof that earlier activity was captured if DevTools was opened late.
For a fair comparison between pages or test runs, use the same capture procedure each time. Note the page, the browser conditions, and whether the capture began before the reload.
Identify whether a request is an API call and what triggered it
Start with type, name, and destination
Use the Type and Name columns to narrow down what the browser fetched. A request’s URL and response details can help distinguish data calls from scripts, images, documents, and other resources. Do not treat every network entry as an API request.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
Trace the initiator
The Initiator column and request details help identify what caused a request. An initiator may point to a script or other resource that led to it; follow that source to inspect the relevant code path. This is more useful than counting requests alone when the question is why a call occurred.
Inspect the payload and timing
Open a request’s details to inspect its headers, timing, and other information. The Payload tab can expose query parameters and form data. The waterfall and timing details show when the request happened relative to other activity, which can help determine whether it started during initial loading or after an interaction.

Check whether storefront scripts or apps are contributing traffic
E-commerce storefronts may include third-party scripts, analytics, pixels, and app code. Shopify advises auditing third-party additions because each script adds main-thread work, which can compete for browser resources. That guidance does not mean all third-party requests are unnecessary or harmful; determine what each one does before changing the storefront. See Shopify’s guidance on auditing and removing third-party scripts.
- Inventory request origins in the Network panel and identify which ones are third parties.
- For a controlled diagnostic, block one domain and compare the resulting requests, transferred data, and scripting time against an otherwise comparable run.
- Repeat the runs under similar conditions, changing only the domain being tested. Record what was blocked and avoid treating one run as a general performance result.
- Use the difference to investigate that domain’s contribution; do not infer that all of its traffic should be removed.
Chrome DevTools provides Request conditions for blocking URL patterns. Blocking is an experiment: it can help isolate a domain’s effect, but it may also disable storefront functions that depend on it. See Chrome’s Request conditions documentation.

Check whether a proxy could be adding a network hop
A proxy can add a hop between a visitor’s browser and Shopify, but a slow request or a single response header does not establish that a proxy caused the delay. Shopify recommends following the DNS/CNAME chain, comparing relevant response headers, and taking repeated time-to-first-byte (TTFB) measurements for the custom domain and the direct Shopify domain. Compare like with like and rely on repeated measurements rather than one noisy result. See Shopify’s storefront proxy guidance.
Check whether calls belong on every page
An API call may be expected only when the component that needs it is present. Shopify recommends checking that calls begin at an appropriate point in page loading and do not appear on pages without the relevant component. Compare pages with and without that component, then inspect the request initiator and timing to see whether the call matches the intended behavior. See Shopify’s storefront performance guidance.

What the available evidence can establish
The article title does not identify the e-commerce site or include a HAR file, screenshots, browser version, or request notes. Consequently, the actual calls, their initiators, and the reason the page appeared to make none cannot be independently verified. The practical conclusion is narrower: a Network capture is only as complete as its timing, and request details—not a visual impression of the page—are needed to establish what the browser requested.
