That is a third-party forecast, not a measured future result. Recent figures from Charles Schwab and Robinhood show strong activity at those individual platforms, but do not establish that retail trading caused the forecast or that any brokerage stock is a good investment.
How big is the e-brokerage market?
GMI puts the global market at an estimated $14.1 billion in 2024 and projects $34.6 billion in 2034. Its stated CAGR is 9.4% over 2025–2034, with 2024 identified as the base year. These figures come from GMI’s market page for a report published in May 2025; the public page does not provide the full paid report’s tables or enough detail to reproduce its model independently. GMI’s market overview is therefore the source for the estimate and forecast, not proof of what the market will ultimately be worth.
GMI says its forecast reflects factors such as retail participation, platform technology and low-cost investing. Its public material does not quantify how much each factor contributes. The forecast should be read as a model-based outlook rather than a result demonstrated by recent trading records.
What does the market include?
E-brokerage is broader than stock-trading apps. GMI segments the market along several separate dimensions:

- Asset class: equities, derivatives, forex, mutual funds and ETFs, and other assets.
- Ownership: private and public providers.
For 2024, GMI reports retail investors at 68% of the market and mobile-based platforms at around 44%. These are shares from different segmentation dimensions, not portions that should be added together. GMI forecasts a CAGR of 9.8% or more for both the retail-investor and mobile-platform segments for 2025–2034. GMI’s market page does not establish that every provider offers every service or asset in every country.
The providers GMI lists include Ally Invest, Charles Schwab, E*TRADE, eToro, Exness, Fidelity, Firstrade, Futu/Moomoo, Groww, Interactive Brokers, Merrill Edge, Robinhood, SoFi Invest, Tastytrade, Tiger Brokers, TradeStation, Upstox, Vanguard, Webull and Zerodha. The list is not a performance ranking, and these firms do not all serve the same markets or compete for identical customers.

What recent company figures show—and what they do not
Company releases offer concrete examples of platform activity, but their measures cover different periods and units. They are not a market-wide tally of retail trading.

Schwab’s figures are in its Q2 2026 results release; Robinhood’s are in its August 2026 operating-data release. Each is a company-reported measure. Comparing trade counts, contract counts, notional dollar volume, customer totals and assets as if they were the same kind of growth would be misleading.

The releases support the narrower conclusion that activity was high or growing at these particular platforms during the periods reported. They do not prove a general increase across all retail investors, establish a causal link to GMI’s forecast, or indicate whether either company’s shares are attractive investments.
Why GMI expects growth—and the constraints it identifies
GMI cites wider internet and smartphone access, more retail participation, demand for self-directed investing and robo-advice, low or zero commissions, and ongoing improvements to digital platforms as growth themes. It also points to ETFs, fractional shares, crypto and other assets, alongside AI-enabled tools and mobile features. These are trends identified by the publisher; availability varies by provider and market, and the public material does not quantify their individual effects on the forecast.

The same analysis identifies strong competition, pressure on margins, cybersecurity and data privacy as challenges. Low-cost access can benefit users while making differentiation and profitability harder for providers. More digital activity also makes the security and handling of account and personal data important considerations. GMI describes its methodology in general terms, including analyst oversight, industry conversations, modelling and cross-validation; its public page does not expose the full report’s calculations.

- Service model: distinguish self-directed discount brokerage from full-service support and automated portfolio management.
- Supported assets: check the specific products available in the user’s country and account type rather than assuming a platform’s entire global feature set is available.
- Costs and business model: review commissions alongside other charges and revenue-generating features that may affect the customer experience.
- Tools: compare research, education, mobile and web functions, and any automated or AI-assisted features that matter to the user.
- Regulatory and security arrangements: verify the relevant local regulatory framework, account protections, privacy terms and security practices.
- Geographic availability: confirm eligibility and product access directly with the provider; the GMI provider list is not a country-by-country availability guide.
GMI’s forecast can describe an expanding industry, but it cannot substitute for checking a platform’s terms, protections and suitability for a particular investor.
