No—not based on what Walmart publicly discloses. Walmart says cameras and automated technologies may capture images at checkout, help deter theft, and improve store design. Its privacy notice does not say they record everything that happens or create a complete record of every shopper. Other tools Walmart describes—including Bluetooth or Wi-Fi location features, parking-lot license plate readers, and AI inventory systems—serve different purposes and should not be lumped together as one surveillance system.
What Walmart says its store cameras do
Walmart’s Customer Privacy Notice, updated August 20, 2026, applies to Walmart retail stores in the United States and Puerto Rico, as well as covered websites, apps, and services. Walmart says it operates cameras and automated technologies in stores and on Walmart property outside stores for security and operational purposes. The notice says these systems may capture images during checkout, to help deter theft, or to improve store design.
“These cameras and automated technologies may capture images of you as part of check out, to help deter theft, or improve store design to better serve our customers.”
The notice also lists visual and audio information—including photographs and audio or video recordings—among information Walmart may collect, while noting that not every category applies to every individual. It lists security and fraud prevention, service improvement, analytics, and research and development among its stated uses of personal information. These are broad disclosures; they do not establish that every camera performs every function in every store.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Walmart also says it does not engage in profiling for decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects concerning consumers. That is Walmart’s statement in its privacy notice, not an independent audit of each system or practice.
Different technologies collect different kinds of data
“Cameras and AI” can suggest a single system tracking shoppers everywhere. Walmart’s disclosures instead describe several technologies with different data, locations, and purposes.

|---|---|---|---|
| Store cameras and automated technologies | Images; Walmart’s notice also identifies visual and audio information it may collect | In stores and on Walmart property outside stores; security and operational purposes, including checkout, theft deterrence, and store design | Walmart describes possible uses, not a universal camera configuration or a complete record of every shopper. |
| Bluetooth or Wi-Fi location features | Signals associated with a mobile device’s location | In stores with free Wi-Fi or Bluetooth; possible services include finding nearby products, locating items, and in-store navigation | Walmart says device settings and consent matter for precise geolocation. This is device-location functionality, not camera tracking. |
| Automated license plate readers (ALPRs) | License plate information | On Walmart properties where permitted by law; security, theft and fraud prevention, parking enforcement, and safety | A separate Walmart notice describes the system and its controls; it does not show what in-store cameras do. |
| AI inventory systems | Operational and inventory information | Inventory management and replenishment across retail operations | Walmart describes AI in operations, not as evidence that cameras observe every shopper or event. |
Is Walmart using AI cameras to track shoppers?
Walmart acknowledges using cameras and automated technologies, but the public notice cited here does not establish that Walmart uses face recognition to identify shoppers, tracks every shopper’s movements through AI cameras, or has one chain-wide system that understands everything happening in stores. The notice’s examples are narrower: checkout image capture, theft deterrence, and store-design improvement.
Location features are a separate issue. Walmart says that, depending on device settings and consent, it may collect precise geolocation. It also says it may recognize a mobile device’s location in stores with free Wi-Fi or using Bluetooth. Its examples for Bluetooth include nearby product discovery, item location, and in-store navigation. A device-location signal should not be described as a camera identifying or following a person.

What the Sam’s Club checkout-camera example shows—and doesn’t
Sam’s Club, a Walmart-owned chain, has reported a specific checkout use of cameras. In a January 9, 2024 report, the Associated Press said Sam’s Club CEO Chris Nicholas described a system that photographs cart contents at the exit to confirm purchases. At that time, the system was available in 10 clubs, with broader rollout planned later that year.
That dated report establishes a particular Sam’s Club example as of January 2024—not a current count, not a deployment in every Sam’s Club, and not proof that Walmart stores use the same system chain-wide.

AI in Walmart operations is not the same as video surveillance
Walmart Global Tech describes AI applications in customer experiences and inventory management. Its article on cloud-powered AI tools says inventory systems connect 4,700 stores, fulfillment centers, distribution centers, and suppliers, and that algorithms adapt to demand changes to support replenishment. That figure describes the network in Walmart’s account; it is not a camera count or surveillance statistic.
Walmart has also reported workforce training in responsible technology. In an October 10, 2024 article, Walmart Global Tech said approximately 1.4 million U.S. associates had completed training in its focus areas. That is a Walmart-reported training figure, not evidence about how much cameras see.

What is known about license plate readers
Walmart’s separate ALPR Privacy Notice, updated February 16, 2026, says automated license plate readers are used on Walmart properties where permitted by law. Walmart lists security, theft and fraud prevention, parking enforcement, and safety as purposes. It says the system is led by the vice president and chief safety officer, access is limited to authorized associates, and the system is routinely monitored for accuracy. These are Walmart’s descriptions of its own controls; plate readers are not in-store camera tracking.
Why claims about AI surveillance need careful wording
Retailers use a range of loss-prevention tools, and industry reporting helps explain why camera technology attracts attention without proving what Walmart uses. Axios reported in March 2024 that retailers were adopting technologies including AI-equipped cameras, RFID, audio detection, and license plate recognition. It quoted Read Hayes, director of the Loss Prevention Research Council, describing cameras as “much more searchable” and having “much greater resolution,” and saying AI can flag suspicious behavior in real time. Axios also noted risks including privacy concerns and false accusations.
That broader industry context is not confirmation that Walmart uses face matching, loitering analytics, or any particular AI camera system. Walmart’s published notice supports a more limited conclusion: it operates cameras and automated technologies for stated security and operational purposes, but the available disclosures do not show that they know everything that happens in its stores.
