It is a weaker choice for large homes, homes with substantial carpeting, or households with heavy shedding pets. In those cases, the brand’s V11 and V15 models, which TechRadar reports have more suction and larger bins, are the better match.
Who this vacuum suits, and who should look at other models
The V12 Detect Slim trades capacity and power for compactness. The clearest way to see the trade-off is to compare it with the V11 and V15 on the points that matter in daily use. TechRadar’s review describes the V12 as the more manageable option for smaller homes, and the table below reflects that comparison. The hard-floor laser
Dyson’s product page states: “A precisely-angled laser makes invisible dust visible on hard floors.” In practice, the laser lights up fine dust that would otherwise be hard to see on a kitchen or wood floor, which helps you spot what is still there after a pass. It is a visibility aid. It does not prove that a room is hygienically clean or free of allergens, and it does not replace a thorough cleaning routine.
The piezo sensor and Auto mode
Dyson describes a piezo sensor that measures particles passing through the inlet 15,000 times per second, and says the machine can adapt suction in Auto mode based on what it detects. This is Dyson’s own description of the feature. Use it as a guide to how the machine responds to debris, not as proof of cleaning performance. In TechRadar’s review, the hard-floor results are the main reason it recommends the model for those surfaces.

Suction, carpets and pet hair
At 150 AW, the V12 Detect Slim is built for light to moderate hard-floor debris. Carpets, rugs and pet hair place a heavier, more sustained load on a machine, and this is where the lower suction shows. TechRadar reports that the V11 and V15 offer more suction, which is why the brand’s stronger models are the better choice when carpet is a large share of the floor area. If you have one short-pile rug in an otherwise hard-floored home, the V12 remains workable. If carpet is the majority of your floor, it is not the right tool.

Bin size and how often you will empty it
The bin is the single biggest practical trade-off. TechRadar’s review puts it plainly: “The smaller, lighter build includes a far smaller bin than you’d find on the average stick vacuum.” According to the review, the 0.35 L capacity may suit a one-bedroom apartment, but in larger or carpeted homes it means emptying frequently.

To judge whether the bin will work for you, run a one-week test with your current vacuum’s habits in mind:
- Count how many rooms you cover in a typical session and how many of them are carpeted.
- Note how many times you would need to empty a 0.35 L bin to finish those rooms.
- If the answer is more than once per session, or if you have a shedding pet, expect frequent emptying and weigh that against the V11 or V15.
Battery, runtime and mode

The V12 Detect Slim’s main physical advantage is how easy it is to handle. TechRadar describes it as light and easy to maneuver, and it notes a one-press power button that keeps startup simple. At 5.22 lb on Dyson’s US listing, it is comfortable for quick cleanups, reaching up or into corners, and carrying between floors. That lightness is also the reason the bin and suction are smaller, so the two trade off directly.

The 98.6% debris figure from Modern Castle
Modern Castle reports that the V12 Detect Slim removed 98.6% of total debris by weight in its own 2022 test. Treat this as that publisher’s test result. It was not independently replicated here, and it does not describe the vacuum’s performance across all homes, floors or debris types. The write-up does not describe the test conditions in enough detail to generalise the number, so use it as one data point rather than a guarantee.
