For many streamers in an ordinary or noisy room, a close-used cardioid dynamic microphone is the more forgiving starting point. A cardioid condenser may suit a quiet, controlled room if you want detailed vocal capture. Neither type is automatically better: room sound, microphone direction, placement, connection, and gain all affect what viewers hear.
What dynamic and condenser mean
Dynamic and condenser describe how a microphone converts sound into an electrical signal. They do not tell you how it connects to a computer: both types are sold as USB and XLR microphones.

A USB microphone can combine the capsule, preamp, and analog-to-digital conversion in one device. An XLR microphone generally needs an audio interface or mixer to connect to a computer. USB is often simpler to set up; XLR makes the interface or mixer a separate part of the signal chain.

Choose a dynamic if the room is noisy or untreated
Dynamic microphones are often a sensible starting point when a desk setup has audible fans, keyboard noise, or room reflections. Manufacturer guidance from Sennheiser and RØDE describes dynamics as less sensitive to room sound or well suited to live use. That is a room-fit advantage, not a guarantee that a dynamic will eliminate unwanted sounds.
#1 Best Overall
- [Natural Audio Clarity] Operated with frequency response of 50Hz-16KHz, the podcasting XLR mic delivers balanced audio range, likely to resonate with your audience. Directional cardioid dynamic microphone corded will not exaggerate your voice, while rejects unwanted off-axis noise for vocal originality and intelligibility during your PS5 gaming streaming video recording. (Tips: Keep the top of end-addressing XLR dynamic microphone AM8 facing audio source, and suggested recording range is 2 to 6 in.)
- [XLR Connection Upgrade-Ability] To use XLR connection, connect the podcast microphone to an audio interface (or mixer) using a separate XLR cable (NOT Included) . Well-connected and smooth operation improves audio flexibility to make you explore various types of music recording singing. The streaming mic isolates the pristine and accurate sound from ambient noise with greater no interference and fidelity. (RGB and function key on mic are INACTIVE when using XLR connection.)
- [USB Connection with Handy Mute] Skip the hassle of setting something up and plug the cable to play the dynamic USB microphone directly, which suits for beginner creators or daily podcast. You can quickly control the gamer mic with tap-to-mute that is independent of computer/Macbook programs to keep privacy when live streaming. LED mute reminder helps you get rid of forgetting to cancel the mute. (RGB and function key are only available for USB connection, but NOT for XLR connection)
- [Soothing Controllable RGB] RGB ring on the desktop gaming microphone for PC, with 3 modes and more than 10 light colors collection, matches your PC gears accessories for gaming synergy even in dim room. You can control the RGB key button of the dynamic microphone USB directly for game color scheme gaming or live streaming. Configured memory function, the streaming microphone RGB no need to repeated selections after turnning off and brings itself alive when power on. (Only available for USB connection)
- [More Function Keys] Computer microphone with headphones jack upgrades your rhythm game experience and gets feedback whether the real-time voice your audience hear as expected. Get the desired level via monitoring volume control when gaming recording. Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
Use a cardioid model if you want to focus on sound in front of the mic. Sennheiser explains that a cardioid microphone is most sensitive from the front and rejects sound from the sides and rear. Put the main unwanted sound toward the mic’s less-sensitive area where practical, and check the pickup pattern and speaking side in the model’s instructions.
Choose a condenser if the room is quiet and you want detail
A condenser can be a good fit in a quiet, controlled space when detailed vocal capture is a priority. RØDE describes condensers as capturing detail and a wide frequency range, while Sennheiser identifies controlled environments with minimal background noise as a suitable use. That does not make a condenser universally better-sounding; a noisy room can be more apparent in the recording.

Use this decision checklist
- Room: If untreated room sound or nearby noise is hard to avoid, lean toward a close-used dynamic. If the space is quiet and controlled, a condenser is worth considering.
- Voice and preference: Decide whether you want a more focused capture or are prioritizing nuanced detail. Listen to examples made in conditions similar to yours when available.
- Speaking distance: Choose a setup that lets you stay at a consistent distance. Moving around can change the level and tone regardless of transducer type.
- Connection: Choose USB for a simpler computer connection, or XLR if you want a separate interface or mixer and its controls.
- Power and gain: Check the microphone’s power requirements and whether your interface can provide enough clean gain before buying extra equipment.
Set up the microphone and signal chain
For a dynamic cardioid at a noisy desk
- Check the microphone’s pickup pattern and which side is meant to face you; cardioid microphones are directional, not equally sensitive in every direction.
- Position it close enough for consistent speech capture, then aim its less-sensitive region toward a prominent unwanted sound where practical.
- If it is an XLR model, connect it to a compatible interface or mixer and set gain so speech is clear without clipping. If you need unusually high gain, assess the interface’s gain and noise floor before adding equipment.
- Use a boom arm if it helps you place the microphone consistently or clear desk space. A pop filter can reduce plosive bursts; neither accessory fixes a poor room or unsuitable microphone placement.
For a condenser in a quiet room
- Consider a cardioid condenser when you want detailed voice capture and can control background noise.
- For an XLR condenser, confirm that the interface or mixer provides the phantom power the microphone requires; 48 V is common, but check the microphone’s own specifications.
- Connect and set the gain according to the microphone and interface instructions. For a USB condenser, use the supplied connection guidance rather than assuming it needs an XLR interface.
- Position the mic for a steady speaking distance, and add a pop filter if plosives are distracting.
USB, XLR, power, and gain: avoid common mix-ups
Connection type and transducer type are separate decisions. A USB dynamic and a USB condenser can both connect directly to a computer; an XLR model of either type normally needs an interface or mixer for computer use.
An XLR condenser generally needs phantom power, commonly 48 V. A passive dynamic microphone does not need phantom power, but some dynamic models need substantial preamp gain. An inline preamp is not mandatory for every dynamic microphone. If an XLR dynamic sounds noisy at the gain you need, first check gain staging and the interface’s noise floor. PreSonus describes an active inline preamp as a possible gain boost in the bus-powered interface situation it discusses, not a universal requirement.

Fine-tune audio levels with the gain knob, while the headphone monitoring jack and volume knob keep you informed and in control, optimizing recording effectiveness. (All the function keys on the mic are invalid when XLR connection. You can operate on mixer or audio interface to control the XLR mic.)
- [Enhanced Noise Suppression] The included windscreen and shock mount set on the PC microphone for music recording effectively do away with harsh noises caused by explosive sounds and low-frequency vibrations. The heavy-duty boom arm maintains distance from your desktop, preventing noise interference, resulting in smoother, clearer vocals during voice-over and streams. (For optimal input volume, adjust input volume via the mic's gain knob in USB connection, or control on your audio interface when XLR connection.)
PreSonus also cautions about using 48 V with a dynamic microphone and an XLR-to-XLR cable. Treat that warning in the context of the exact microphone and interface: follow both manufacturers’ instructions rather than assuming every combination is safe or unsafe.
Common problems and what to check
- The room or keyboard is prominent: Recheck distance, speaking direction, and cardioid orientation. A dynamic may be a more forgiving fit for a noisy room, but it cannot remove every sound the mic picks up.
- Your voice sounds thin or changes as you move: Keep a more consistent distance and address the microphone’s intended front. Confirm the model’s pickup pattern and placement guidance.
- An XLR dynamic is too quiet or noisy: Check interface gain and noise floor before buying an inline preamp. Whether extra gain equipment helps depends on the microphone and interface.
- An XLR condenser does not operate as expected: Confirm that the interface or mixer supplies the power the mic requires and that you have followed its connection instructions.
- Plosive sounds interrupt speech: Adjust placement and consider a pop filter; it reduces plosives but does not replace appropriate mic positioning.
Is a particular dynamic microphone a safe bet?
RØDE names the PodMic as a dynamic microphone suitable for streaming, podcasts, vocals, and live events. That makes it an example to consider if a dynamic suits your room; it is not evidence that it outperforms other microphones in a test. Check the specific model’s connection, pattern, and setup requirements before choosing.
