Dynamic drive mapping has no single universal meaning: it can refer to Group Policy mapping a user to network shares, a remote session mounting drives attached to a client device, or a cloud-drive product combining storage locations in one view. The right definition depends on the software and setting where you encountered the phrase.
What dynamic drive mapping means in each setting
Start by identifying the environment, what is being mapped, and what triggers the mapping. Those details distinguish three uses of the term.

| Environment | What is mapped | What triggers it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows domain administration | A network share assigned as a drive for users | Group Policy Preferences apply the configured mapping |
| Oracle Secure Global Desktop 5.6 | A drive on the user’s client device, available inside a remote session | A removable drive is attached during an active session |
| Cloud Drive Mapper | Multiple cloud locations presented together in a view | The product’s configured cloud-drive behavior |
Windows Group Policy network shares
Microsoft uses Drive Maps to describe a Group Policy Preferences extension for creating and managing network-share mappings. Administrators can create mappings, use alternate credentials, change mapped-drive properties, remove mappings, and hide or show drives. Microsoft describes the feature as a way to “Create dynamic drive mappings to network shares.” See Microsoft Learn’s Drive Maps extension documentation.
Removable drives inside a remote session
In Oracle Secure Global Desktop (SGD) 5.6, client drive mapping gives applications running on supported application-server platforms access to drives on the user’s client device. Its dynamic behavior is specifically about removable storage: when a user attaches a USB memory stick during a session, SGD detects and mounts it automatically. Client Drive Mapping (CDM) must be enabled, and user or application access configuration also affects availability. Newly enabled services affect new sessions. Oracle says dynamic drive mapping is enabled by default for an SGD array. These details are specific to SGD 5.6; consult the Oracle Secure Global Desktop 5.6 Administration Guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Cloud-drive aggregation
Cloud Drive Mapper uses “dynamic drive mapping” for bringing multiple cloud locations into a single view, rather than for Windows Group Policy or removable client drives. Its documentation lists OneDrive shortcuts, Microsoft Teams, and SharePoint as dynamic drive types. That is Cloud Drive Mapper’s product terminology, and the listed types may change; it is not a general Microsoft definition. See Cloud Drive Mapper’s drives and features documentation.
How to map network drives with Group Policy Preferences
For the Windows domain-administration meaning, configure a Drive Maps preference item in a domain-based Group Policy Object. The documented path is under User Configuration, so the mapping is configured for users.

- Open the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) and edit the domain-based GPO that should apply to the users.
- Go to User Configuration > Preferences > Windows Settings > Drive Maps.
- Create a Drive Maps preference item and select the action that matches the intended behavior: Create, Replace, Update, or Delete.
- Set the network-share path and other properties required for the mapping, then apply the GPO to the intended users.

Choose the action carefully
- Create: creates the mapping.
- Update: changes only the settings defined in the preference item.
- Replace: deletes and recreates the mapping, overwriting its associated settings.
- Delete: removes the mapping.
Because Replace recreates the mapping, it has a different effect from Update. Choose based on whether you need to preserve settings not defined in the preference item.

Why a removable drive appears in a remote session
If you see a client computer’s USB storage inside an Oracle SGD session, it is likely the SGD client-drive mapping behavior: the session detects and mounts removable storage attached while the session is active. This is not the same as a domain administrator mapping a network share for a user.
Access depends on CDM services and the relevant user or application access configuration. If a service was just enabled, the change applies to new sessions, so a newly started session is the appropriate place to check the updated behavior.

Identify which meaning applies
- If the instructions mention a domain, GPO, GPMC, or User Configuration, they mean Windows Group Policy Preferences and network shares.
- If they mention a remote desktop or application session and a USB device attached to the local computer, they mean client-drive redirection in a remote-session product.
- If they mention OneDrive, Teams, SharePoint, or combining cloud locations, they may be using Cloud Drive Mapper’s product-specific terminology.
