The New York Rangers beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 at Little Caesars Arena on October 2, 2026, as Dylan Garand made 22 saves for his first NHL shutout. It was the rookie goaltender’s fourth NHL game and Detroit’s season opener.
How the Rangers took the lead
Sean Durzi put New York ahead on a power play at 5:12 of the first period, scoring his first goal with the Rangers on a pass from Gabe Perreault. Durzi appeared to score again at 7:10, also on the power play, but Detroit challenged the play for offside and the goal was overturned.
The Rangers held their one-goal lead until Eeli Tolvanen scored into an empty net at 18:44 of the third period. The NHL game recap records Detroit with 20 shots through two periods and just two in the third.
Garand’s first NHL shutout
Garand stopped 22 shots to earn his first NHL shutout in his fourth game. The NHL and Detroit’s official recap both report 22 saves; the Associated Press report carried by theScore lists 23. The two matching official accounts support 22 as the reported total.

According to the Rangers’ postgame notes, Garand became the eighth Rangers rookie goaltender to record a first career shutout within his first four NHL games. He also extended his opening NHL points streak to four games, with a 3-0-1 record. The NHL recap says he had gone 2-0-1 in three appearances late last season.
Detroit could not convert its chances
John Gibson made 19 saves for Detroit. The Red Wings went 0-for-2 on the power play, while New York scored once on four power-play opportunities and killed all three Detroit advantages, according to the Detroit Red Wings’ official recap.

“We didn’t give up a lot. Going the other way, though, we’re going to have to score some goals to win games. We had some looks, not near enough. So, that’s going to have to get polished up,” Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan said in Detroit’s recap.

Detroit was opening its 2026-27 season, while the Rangers were playing their third game in four nights and their second game in as many nights. New York had beaten Tampa Bay 5-1 the previous evening, according to the NHL recap.
