A dye-sub printer uses heat to transfer dye, but the term describes two different setups: a self-contained photo printer that transfers dye from a ribbon to photo media, and an inkjet printer that makes a transfer for a separate heat press. The right type depends on whether you want finished photos or designs on polyester and compatible coated products.
What does “dye-sub” mean?
“Dye-sub” is short for dye sublimation. In the process, heat moves dye onto a receiving material. The phrase dye-sub printer can refer either to a dedicated thermal photo printer or to an inkjet-based transfer system, so it is important to identify which workflow is meant before discussing supplies or uses.

How the two printer workflows differ
Ribbon-based photo printers
A dedicated dye-sub photo printer has a thermal print head, a colored dye ribbon, and photo media designed for that printer. The print head controls heat to transfer dye from the ribbon onto the matched media; some systems add a protective finish. The print is ready to handle when it comes out, and the workflow does not require a separate heat press. A transfer setup prints a design with sublimation ink onto transfer paper. The paper is placed against polyester fabric or a compatible polymer-coated blank, then a suitable heat press or calendar applies heat and pressure to transfer the dye. The printer makes the transfer; it does not directly produce the finished object. Epson describes the maker workflow as designing, printing the transfer, then pressing it onto a polyester blank. These systems should not be confused with one another: ribbon-based photo printers use compatible ribbon and photo media, while transfer systems need sublimation ink, transfer paper, and suitable transfer equipment. Mimaki Europe’s overview of sublimation printing
What can a dye-sub printer make?

Transfer examples can include apparel, banners, mugs, and other coated goods, but compatibility depends on the blank and process. How is it different from an ordinary inkjet printer?
An ordinary inkjet deposits microscopic ink particles onto paper. A dedicated dye-sub photo printer instead uses heat to transfer dye from a color ribbon onto specially coated photo paper. A sublimation transfer printer may itself use inkjet technology, but it prints with sublimation ink onto transfer paper, which is then heat-transferred to a compatible material. What to check before choosing a setup
- Start with the finished output. Choose a photo-printer workflow for finished photos; choose transfer sublimation for designs intended for textiles or compatible coated blanks.
- Match the supplies to the system. Photo printers use their compatible dye ribbon and photo media. Transfer systems use sublimation ink and transfer paper.
- Check the receiving material. Transfer sublimation is intended for polyester or compatible polymer-coated surfaces. Brother’s US support FAQ for the SP-1/SP-1W, dated October 31, 2024, specifies polyester for that product’s described workflow; that is product guidance, not a universal statement about every sublimation system. - Account for transfer equipment and format. Transfer work needs a suitable press for the item or a calendar for continuous media. Confirm that the equipment fits the material and production format.
- Follow the transfer instructions closely. Epson and Brother direct users to mirror the design so it reads correctly after pressing. Epson notes that a transfer can look less vibrant before pressing and recommends following the blank manufacturer’s washing instructions. Epson’s sublimation printing guide
Why transfer settings are not one-size-fits-all
Roland DG’s technical guide gives a typical transfer example of 180–200°C for 35–60 seconds. Those figures are an example in that guide, not universal settings: the appropriate process depends on the printer, press, ink, and receiving blank.
